It >seems to work fine but is there any reason not to use it? IT's been working like a charm for us. We help record sound for a local chicago jam band and we've been using this nifty little device for months now. Get this it send 7 digital feeds (coaxial) and 7 analog feeds (rca). It is truly a piece of work. Yup, the digital outs work just fine. Remeber your only passing a signal and this doesn't muck up the sound or anything. here's the link. http://www.smarthome.com/8141.html Enjoy! Kelly

From: "Darrin McKeehen" <dmckeehen@hotmail.com> Subject: Pork Tornado Tour Dates Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 01:17:19 Phish drummer Jon Fishman's funky side project Pork Tornado will embark on a series of club dates throughout the Northeast in April. In addition to Fishman, the band includes Dan Archer on guitar, Phil Abair on keys, Aaron Hersey on bass, and Joe Moore on sax and vocals. The tentative schedule is as follows: April 5 - Pearl Street, Northampton, MA http://www.iheg.com/pearl.htm April 6 - Paradise Rock Club, Boston, MA http://www.dlclive.com/ April 7 - Met Cafe, Providence, RI http://www.lupos.com/ April 12 - Toad's Place, New Haven, CT http://www.toadsplace.com/ April 13 - Armory High, Syracuse, NY http://www.tickets.com/ (888-223-6000) other information: 315-472-2665 April 14 - Milestones, Rochester, NY http://www.milestonesmusicroom.com/ Please watch http://www.porktornado.com/ for accurate information. Also, Seth is correct about bribing ushers. I have found the best thing to do is burn some discs of some shows and take the discs w/ you to the show that you are taping. Not only can you bribe the ushers, but you can bribe some of the people around you........ Just a thought ") Peace & moe. From: "Joshua" <sprung598@yahoo.com> Subject: Nero question (burning problems resolved) Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 18:34:03 -0800 Nero seems to blaze right through the disks that I received that CDRWin was choking on. I'm using the wizard to copy an audio CD - where does it write the image to by default? Can you change that? I've got my drive in two partitions, a system and a larger one that I use to store audio files, and I'd like to have it buffer the image in the larger of the two. Anything else is much more likely to extract with errors. Seth

From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: Re: help w/mic's [CDub} & DAT>CDR loudness increase Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 21:34:55 -0800 1) I started last June w/MiniDisc and just now graduated to an M-1 w/SBM-1. My first mic's were from Sound Professionals and I swear by them. His "premium" mini-mic's are based on the Audio Technica AT853 cartridge and I've had consistently good results. The standard configuration is cardioid heads. I had them make mine with hypercardioid instead because I frequently record from further back and was concerned about picking up ambient crowd noise from talkers nearby. Good choice - they have great, relatively flat response and kick ass for the price. Core Sound also has its adherents but I haven't tried their gear and can't comment from expereince. I will attest that the service and delivery I received from SP was first rate. After a month or so I realized I'd need mini shotguns for a few specific applications and also something less directional than the hypers. They worked out a great trade deal for me to upgrade to the slimline version which has changeable heads (the standard premiums are fixed head). Idid lots of research before buying mic's based on ther AT853 and found many positive comments in the DAT-heads digest archives. No matter which brand you buy make sure you spend the $$ for a battery box, preferably on with bass roll-off and use the line input.. In my experience it makes a noticeable diference in sound quality compared to using the mic inputs. 2) I use CoolEdit but I suspect your prog is similar. Don't expect the levels to be similar to what you'll find on a commercial CD. Producers for commercial work often use (I believe) compression techniques that provide remarkably consostent output levels across the whole disc. Use any ripping prog to get a wav file form a commercial rock CD. Now compare the wav form to that of a DAT that you recorded. Notice that the commercial CD yields a wav form with high peaks and few long troughs (if any)? The raw DAT recording will have far bigger spikes from specific sounds (e.g. kick drums) and great variation. I've seen wav forms from DAT recordings that resembled those of commercial releases but the live recordings were made using the mic limiting feature and it affected quality in a noticeable way (even to my less than golden ears). I simply pick the biggest spikes of the overall wav, highlight a small section and use the "calculate normalization level" function included in the Amplitude section of the "Transform" pull down menu. It calculates the percentage increase needed to maximize that selection to 100% allowable loudness. I back off by 5-8% from that figure and then try increasing the amplitude of the entire wav file. Works very well for louder lectric music but be cautious. Excessive normalization can cause audible artifacts, particularly on acoustic music. If you trade DAT's or CDR's with folks who are fanatical about "untouched" material I suggest you advise them that you normalized the material, just in the interest of full disclosure. I've gotten much better at setting levels and stil normalize on occasion but event the cleanest DAT or MD recordings will typically require higher volume settings to get the same level of sound. Hope this helps.

From: <paul.j.cho@us.pwcglobal.com> Subject: Eliminating pops and clicks Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 09:39:27 -0500 Hello all, I know this isn't directly DAT related, but I also know that a lot of people here digitially edit their DATS on a computer so I hope it is somewhat relevant. I taped a band the other night at a small restaurant, and I (or the band for that matter!) didn't have time to do a sound check. I was able to setup my mics right in front of the which lead to a strong sounding tape, but unfortunately I have some pops and clicks on the first song, most likely due to overloading and setting the levels too high. I've used SoundForge's Dynamic Compression effect to eliminate the loudness of the clicks, but I'm wondering if anybody has any other pointers on how to eliminate these pops. The only other thing that I can think of is to lower the volume completely during that split second where the pop takes place, but that would definitely be noticeable. Any ideas?? Can some recommend a way that I can make my recording louder or tell me >what Im doing wrong. I have heard other DAT>CDR transfers and they so loud. I saw your post on dat-heads and wanted to offer some input. Depending on your software, there is probably a "normalize" feature which should enable you to bring up the levels overall and assure that the loudest peak is at 0dbfs. Otherwise, you may want to consider that HHB CD-R 830 which offers digital volume control and left/right balance of incoming digital signals. Please let me know if I may be of further assistance.
