Subject: [newbie question] 60m vs 90m for taping
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 13:04:06 -0800
I've read about 100 post, articles, and web sites related to 60m and 90m
tapes. All of them deal with why 60m tapes are better. But none of them
discuss what you are supposed to do for long concerts (i.e. DMB, Phish,
Pearl Jam and other big name bands).
I'm planning to do a taping run of the up coming DMB and U2 concerts in
California. Both DMB and U2 regularly past the 120min barrier.
My question is... If you’re pretty sure the concert will go past 120min do
you use 90m tapes or do you use 2x60m tapes? What's preferred?
I was under the impression that DAT tapers\traders prefer one continuous
tape and they also prefer 60m tapes
I would much rather use a 60m tape but I don’t want to have worrry about
changing tapes.
What’s a newbie supposed to do?
Thanks,
Rick

while the smarthome 1->4 and 1->7 patchbays are nifty for use at a show
(or anywhere you might want to distribute only one signal to many devices),
if you want something more flexible, you might consider the Midiman Digipatch
12x6. It accepts 6 coax and 6 optical inputs (all independently addressable)
and offers 6 pairs (one coax, one digital) of outputs.
Once you get used to the interface, it's a trivial matter to set up things
like this (my standard config):
Sony play CD -> Tascam CD burner
Fostex DAT -> SCMS stripper -> Sony DAT;
Denon DAT -> Pani DAT;
desired source (any of above) -> D/A converter -> rest of stereo rig.
you can also set up 1->many and many->1 configurations...
i got mine real cheap from zzounds.com (they show $350 right now, but
i seem to remember paying a bit less)

Subject: Eliminating pops and clicks
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 09:39:27 -0500
Hello all,
I know this isn't directly DAT related, but I also know that a lot of
people here digitially edit their DATS on a computer so I hope it is
somewhat relevant.
I taped a band the other night at a small restaurant, and I (or the band
for that matter!) didn't have time to do a sound check. I was able to
setup my mics right in front of the which lead to a strong sounding tape,
but unfortunately I have some pops and clicks on the first song, most
likely due to overloading and setting the levels too high. I've used
SoundForge's Dynamic Compression effect to eliminate the loudness of the
clicks, but I'm wondering if anybody has any other pointers on how to
eliminate these pops. The only other thing that I can think of is to lower
the volume completely during that split second where the pop takes place,
but that would definitely be noticeable. Any ideas??
Thanks in advance!

Figure I'd try this forum to hook up with a patch *before* the show for a
change.
I'm politely looking for a digital patch for RatDog in Tampa & Pompano
Beach.
I'll be bringing a D8 with an active (oade) cable, power supply & plenty of
adapters and cables.
If you can help me out, please get in touch. Thank you!

Hi Dat-Heads

what do you think? rk-da10p will works fine with tcd-d8? whats the best for
D8?

Recently in this list somebody tells that used the next configuration and
don't worked:
mics>da-p1>digital conexion>tcd-d8
whats happened with him? whats wrong with that?
I need to know this to buy a sony cable to connect my inbox with a D8, and
dap1 to D8
for your help thanks

I use CoolEdit but it works just like SoundForge. Dropping the volume all
the way on that spot has always been noticeable in my experience. Two other
techniques sometimes work for me. 1) zoom in on the pop or click and delete
that section. If it's small enough (short in duration) this can sometimes be
done wiht no noticeable dropout in the sound . Sometimes I use the zero
crossings function to ensure that no pop or click occurs from the transition
between the two newly joined sections. I always try it without that furst
because using zero crossings enlarges the section removed by a bit 2) if
it's only on one channel try deleteing the bad section on one channel and
then pasting in the exact same sectio from the other chanel. Youl now have
dual channel mon and will notice a change i sound as spatiality collapses
but if it's a short section this can be a useful technique. In extreme
circumstances I've even dleted a longer sectiojn by using the "find next
beat" function and joining two sections in which the beat is similar. It's
extreme but better than having an unlistenable piece of music.

Hi,
Can anybody recommend a good web page that details the differences between
using something like a Sony ECM717 mic, and third-party mics, such as Sound
Professional? I taped a show recently, right in front of the speaker
stacks, along with another guy who was next to me. He used the Sony mic, I
used the SPs. My tape is distorted due to the SPL levels being too high for
the SPs to handle, his show sounds fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
