From: mattz62@juno.com Subject: Wet vs. Dry Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 16:35:25 -0500 Ok, I know the story of wet vs. dry head cleaners for DATs. Found this, which is interesting. http://www.americanrecorder.com/Appfiles/Catalog.taf?_function=detail&Pro ducts_uid1=DAT%2D101&_UserReference=77FA6A5C5CD1B7FEBE5B43B2 It's a cassette type _WET_ cleaner. Anyone use one before? Is this thing abrasive like a Sony cleaning tape, etc.? Just looking to see if it's worthy of using in place of a dry cleaner, any info is welcome, thanks in advance. From: "Lane Kelly" <lkelly@infi.net> Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #817 Reply-to: lkelly@infi.net Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 16:52:30 -0500 As an alternative to deleting music (especially large chunks between beats, because I'd rather have a flawed complete tape than one that's been hacked up), how about this: It's pretty easy to recognize a clipped section - you will see the waveform hit the top "ceiling" and then flatten out before coming back down. If you could imagine the situation without that ceiling, you would likely see a waveform rounded off in some way. It may go way up to a sharp peak, or it may be rounded off more smoothly. Soundforge has a "clipped peak restoration" tool which could be helpful here. It will lower the section where clipping occurs (to provide more "headroom"), and then round off the waveform. There's a lot of approximation done here, but I would consider that a better alternative than just wiping it out with silence or cutting the section out altogether. A "pencil" tool can produce similar results, but the operation is more manual. The pencil tool is also good for clicks that have been introduced by a bad extraction sample - you'll see a huge spike where the laser has read a bogus value. Many times those can be quite obvious, and are easily fixed by approximating the original waveform and eliminating the spike. Anyone have something more technical to add to this? How do high-end software editing programs handle this? > From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> > Subject: Re: elminating pops and clicks > Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 19:33:19 -0800 > > I use CoolEdit but it works just like SoundForge. From: "david gatewood" <daveg_8@hotmail.com> Subject: Van Halen @ Cow Palace Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 23:19:54 Hey Datheads, I have a 3rd gen cassette of Van Halen from the Cow Palace sometime from 1984. I was going to transfer it to cd for a friend (not to be sent out for public trading due to quality) and was wondering if anyone had the proper date for that. Also if anyone has a better copy or has transferred it to either cd or DAT, I would love a trade. Mine sounds like a Sony 909>D6 kinda tape. Not too bad, but would like better. It is an excellent show, with the band in top form, close to 2 hours. From: "Darrin McKeehen" <dmckeehen@hotmail.com> Subject: ISO: Sony PCM- R500 Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 23:39:24 Hey Now! I have decided to go FURTHUR in dept and get an R500. I am looking for the best possible price for a *NEW* deck. Used R500's are kinda rare. Guess that's because when the owner's get them, they hang onto them. Of course, I will consider a really nice used R500, but none of that EBAY crap. No, I will not consider a Panasonic or Tascam, so don't bother. Mark Nutter? Klay? Gary? Anybody? I am in Jacksonville, FL. So if no one wants to beat the OADE'S price, I will remain loyal to them. Thanx!! From: maki futo <futomaki65@yahoo.com> Subject: M-1 newbie-ish prob Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 16:54:11 -0800 (PST) I have a new M1 and a Delta Dio 2448 soundcard in Windows 95. I'm using an older version of Dio's driver software, as the newest model wouldn't install in my system. The soundcard will accept an optical input from my home deck (Sony DTC-790, which has no coax output), but coaxial input from the M1 is fraught with noise. My question: Could you recommend an affordable soundcard that you M1 owners are happy with, and/or otherwise tell me what the problem is? Thanks in advance, Futo __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/
From: rob@allstarupgrades.com Subject: [newbie question] 60m vs 90m for taping Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 20:00:48 -0500 > My question is... If you=92re pretty sure the concert will go past 120min= do > you use 90m tapes or do you use 2x60m tapes? What's preferred? There's a lot of folks who simply will not put a 60m tape in their deck,= and I'm sure you've had replies from quite a few of them. This topic= comes up all the time and it's been hotly debated over the years.= Personally I have no problem with 90m tapes, I've been using them for= going on 4 years now. When it comes to taping, once you miss it it's gone= forever (unless of course someone else was taping as well and DID use a= 90m). When I first started taping shows ("jambands") I would generally= use 2x60m, 1 for each set. There have been a few times when I've used a= single 90m due to lack of blanks at the time (I don't recommend this for= jambands). Even with 2x60m there's always a chance the band will decide= to play longer than what you planned for. At a certain moe. show in 98= the 2nd set ran about 2.25 hours, needless to say the majority of tapers= missed part of it. Ever since that day I vowed to use 2x90m when taping= moe. :) In my opinion 2x90m is the way to go for most bands who have been= known to play long because it gives you a safety net, though really the= 90m is only necessary for the 2nd set. Once you get home you can clone to= 60m's. The occasional 90m is not going to kill your deck, it's been= proven time and time again with massive amounts of empirical evidence.= Clone your show to 60m when you get home, then listen to the clone to= ensure it is a perfect copy (and always watch your error counter on the= play deck when cloning!). Once you're certain you have a good clone of= the master you can discard the 90m or archive it if you wish. Summary: If the bands you are taping play a single set then I'd most= definitely use a 90m. If they play 2 sets you should be fine with 2x60m= unless they decide to get crazy that night. For jambands I think the best= policy is 1x60m + 1x90m. Good luck, and have FUN! Rob
From: Alan Saferstein <gruvenon@netzero.net> Subject: ISO ABB One for Woody source Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 22:14:31 -0500 I have ABB One For Woody. It's a very nice recording listed as CMC641>A/D 2000>PCM-M1>HHB. Obviously this setups needs a pre-amp/phantom (not to mention that the PCM-M1>HHB part is irrelevant). Does anyone know what it was? From: Alan Saferstein <gruvenon@netzero.net> Subject: ISO Good SCSI Hard Drive for Audio Apps Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 22:15:16 -0500 I just put a Seagate/SGI DDS drive in my computer. Of course I had to get a SCSI card for it. I went ahead and got an Adaptec 39160. I figured for a couple of extra bucks why not get the bitchin' card. The DDS deck takes one channel, now I want to put fast, yet reasonably priced, SCSI drive on the other channel. Anyone have any recommendations? 20-30 Gb should suffice. Thanks, Alan PS I bought Eduard Ungemach's vdat software to go with the DDS drive and it works like a charm. I use Win98 SR2. I'm bringing my taping gear with me, so can anybody recommend some good shows during that time? I like most pretty much all musical genres with the notable exceptions of jazz and classical, but tend toward folk/ country/alt-country/acoustic/rock/... I'm going to try to catch Fred Eaglesmith at the Makor next Thursday (March 22) if tickets are still available, but I'm open to other suggestions, and would love to hook up with other DAT-Heads if possible. From: Bill <cds@bilner.com> Subject: Mac burning software? Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 10:57:07 -0800 Is there a consensus on what's the best Mac software for burning CDRs? I've ben using Toast 3.5.7 which works OK for 1:1 copies, but is not that elegant for anything more complicated. Before upgrading to the latest version of Toast (Deluxe 4.1?) assuming that it's more user-friendly, I thought I'd ask around. I've been frustrated with 3.5.7's making you manually remove the :02 blank space that it automatically adds to a track list every time you make a new session. Also, 3.5.7 doesn't acknowledge MP3s or MP3s that have been converted to WAVs in SoundJam MP 2.51. Lastly, can anyone explain to me what the new Apple iTunes software is for compared to Toast? Please respond directly to cds@bilner.com Thanks, Bill
