Reply-To: bstone@coupcorp.com Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 09:18:44 -0800 (PST) Is there a CD-Burner Market Posting (similar to the DAT-Heads Market Posting for DAT Machines? Or any other price/performance rating compilation/resource that you know of? What is generally considered to be the best price/performance brand/model at: 1. Under $300 2. $300 to $400 3. $500 to $600 etc. What about a discussion of stand alone burners versus computer burners? Thanks to all for you references. b __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/

From: Ron Dalton <RDalton@najarian.com> Subject: Re: one for woody source Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 12:31:22 -0500 Hey All - afore we jump to conclusion as to which source is best, I'm going to have to go out on a limb here and state that I know for a fact that there was another B&K rig FOB too. :) No, I have not compared Seth's recording, but if I know the B&K's as I do, I'm sure Seths source smokes!! If I recall properly, I heard after the show that Seth had a battery issue at some point?? Don't really recall the details - Seth?? I think I remem. sending ya something to fix the gap you had?? Maybe?? I do remem. that as we were setting up our stuff FOB that band security came over and gave us a hard time about using a mic. stand. We ditched the stand and taped the 4022's to the rim of my hat and we wore the mics for all 4 sets. By the end of the night I was a zombie. I learned that the reason for it was b/c they were taping (vid) of that show for release. When it comes to taping at Roseland, you H-A-V-E to get up front - that place has the worst sound in the NYC area (T.S.) that I can think of! I already B&Ped the FOB's to a few people, so the source is indeed out there...... Happy Hunting! Ron Dalton (Ben Marks Stated): I came out of the split B and Ks , hence the HHB at the end of the lineage. I'll take the B and K sound over the Gefell tapes any day. I know this to be true because when batteries crapped out on the deck in front of me, I was switched into the Gefell rig at the end of the line. There was no comparison in sound. Seth's rig rules the roost!!! Ben Marks (formerly HHBPro, now BenJD2B as I head off to law school in the fall).

From: michael peachey <michael@peachey.com> Subject: 48k DATs looking like 44.1 DATs ?? Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 12:37:47 -0800 I recently taped a show at 44.1, for the sole purpose of burning to CDR as opposed to archiving. When I play back one of the tapes from the show, it sounds slow. It's as if a 48k digital signal was fed into the machine, but the playback is at 44.1. The indicator says 44.1 on playback in 3 different decks. Is it possible for a DAT to record a digital signal "at the wrong speed"? I was using a DA-P1 in a chain of other DA-P1s all hooked into a digital feed. Other tapes made the same night on the same deck sound ok. peachey -- michael peachey http://peachey.com michael@peachey.com Live music list - http://www.tapetrader.com/mpeachey

I have certainly heard >some truely lousy tapes made with AD1000 and the frills and >good tapes made with a PCM recorder and the Sony provided >filters/AD converter Hey, ouch! I'm probably responsible for some of those lousy sounding tapes... Having a "dream rig" is only icing on the cake. When you have a modest system and your tapes are average, you get what you expected, and as we all know, there are many surprises! Lots of tapes that are made on less than pristine rigs sound great. Just like the guy beside me at Panic Red Rocks '96 who made dramatically better sounding tapes with his 460's>DA-P1 than I did with 4011's>Lunatec>Apogee>Portadat. Sometimes it just happens that way. This is just more great support for the argument that we should be listening to the music and stay open to savoring what's on those tapes more than what equipment was used to make them. Of course, lots can be said for the benefits of a great system, but spending the most on equipment doesn't guarantee the best results. As many of you have already read, we are taking the plunge into an experimental system using the Sony Vaio C1VN, along with a bunch of bells and whistles, for 24-bit field recording. Having closely compared the DAT tapes that we made at the same time as the 24-bit recordings, the differences are quite noteworthy--deeper, more spacious imaging, greater detail in low- and high-end, and better balance of instrumentation. Still, there may be better tapes out there of the very same show as a result of better placement, miking technique, and equipment selection. As we know, there are certain systems that match up in some rooms and with some P.A. systems better than others. >(There is/was even someone on this list >who made some pretty damn good tapes of St. Stephen in '83 >with Sennheiser 441s.... and I think a 14bit Technics processor. ) Good point, and here's another... If you're getting a digital in, it doesn't matter what your deck is set to, it will copy the input. That said, it's possible to get a tape at the wrong speed, but it isn't easy. Using a box I have that allows the setting of subcodes, I can set the subcode on a 48 kHz tape to 44.1; however, I've never heard of a way to do that without such a box. Seth

Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 16:00:29 -0800 (PST) Having heard some horror stories concerning the "in-your-face" Nazi-style security measures claimed to be enforced at the Hollywood Palladium in L.A., was wondering if anyone here can throw more light on this particular venue's policies, based on actual, recent experience rather than word-of-mouth rumors? :) Would appreciate any feedback, notably in the area of pat downs and especially concerning metal detector usage (how often employed, what body parts scanned, and such grisly details...)! I would prefer to sell everything at once but might be willing to entertain offers to sell individual items. Everything was purchased by me from US retailers and was new at the time of purchase except for the KC Active cables which were purchased used from a US retailer. All components are in perfect operating condition with only slight paint ware on Active Cables and CMC Bodies. For more information on the windscreens check out the Lightwave Windscreens at http://www.lightwavesystems.com/. Lightwave screens are produced for audio professionals and are often observed on the nightly news, I have yet to pick up any wind noise using these screens and they appear to be indestructable. Purchased new everything would cost $5430. I am asking what I believe is a very fair price of $3300. Please email me privately if you are interested. 1) Schoeps CMC6 Bodies (Pair) 2) Schoeps MK 41 Capsules (Matched Pair) 3) Schoeps MK 4 Capsules (Matched Pair) 4) Schoeps KC Active Cables 6.5' long (Pair) 5) Schoeps A20S Shock mount (Single) 6) Lightwave MiniScreen (Pair) 7) Lightwave WindMaster (Furry Covers) (Pair)
