From: "Robbie Dunn" <goheels@mindspring.com> Subject: DATs up for grabs.... Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 07:53:01 -0500 Well it's finally happened..... I've ran out of space. To help free up some of that space, I'm unloading some DATs that I have transferred to CD (guess I don't need duplicates of all these shows). This is a perfect opportunity for a DAT "newbie" to get your hands on a bunch of sweet sounding recordings, with very little effort. I'll take one sealed Sony DAT for each tape listed below and preference will be given to someone who will take them all. You pay shipping to me & I'll cover shipping back to you...... Here's what I have.... String Cheese Incident (all sweet soundboards) 11-18-00 Atlanta 2x60 11-17-00 Atlanta 2x60 11-15-00 Birmingham 2x60 11-12-00 Columbia, SC 2x60 7-21-00 Greek Theatre 1x90 7-19-00 Mt Shasta 2x60 7-18-00 Mt Shasta 2x60 3-18-00 Fillmore SF 2x60 3-17-00 Fillmore SF 2x60 3-10-00 Eugene, Or 2x60 3-9-00 Eugene, OR 2x60 12-31-99 Portland 60+90 Steve Kimock Band 12-22-00 Palookaville - Santa Cruz 1x90 (on stage AKG C61) Zero 11-10-00 Maritime - San Francisco 2x60 Widespread Panic 12-30-00 Atlanta 60+90 (FOB Schoeps tubes) Widespread Panic 12-31-00 Atlanta 2x60 (FOB Schoeps tubes) Based on my counts, that works out to 26 (60 meter) & 4 (90 meter). You can order blanks from one of the taper friendly shops (Masterpiece, AM-Dig, Oade Bros, or Terrapin) and have them sent directly to me. I'll ship the tapes out to you as soon as I'm notified that the blanks are in transit to me. Robbie PS I've already put track id's on most of these tapes, so it'll be easy to do cd transfers if that's your thing.

It was the first Salmon show I've seen with the new lineup and it met and exceeded my expectations. This was also my first exposure to the new club in St. Louis, The Pageant, and I was dissapointed. The acoustics are horrible--especially for a club supposedly designed for live bands. Luckily the board feed was nice. I'm currently only doing DAT B&P's and I'll take 4 or 5 for now (1 90M, or 2 60M's). -- Wayne D. From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: Qs about Nick Cave current tour Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 10:37:39 EST hey everyone we're going to the Nick Cave performance at Palace of Fine Arts on Tuesday, and before I went, I wondered how long his current shows are, approximately, and if the sound is as "loud" as it is when he has his Bad Seeds performing with him. In other words, should I set my attenuator to 0 or -20 (using my PCM-M1) for this show? I taped Burt B at the same venue last year, and the sound was quite soft, so I wasn't sure if there was a pattern or not for loudness or not... Thanks in advance Mike gaobest@aol.com

I make live recordings on my Sony DAT walkman and would like to edit them on my computer and transfer them to CD. Currently, I use the analog out into a "SoundBlaster Live!" card analog in. I edit in SoundForge and then write out to CD. Naturally, I'd like to bypass the D/A and subsequent A/D conversion. The Sony DAT has SPDIF 7 pin output. The SoundBlaster has: a. "2-pin Molex" connector which takes CD_SPDIF input b. "Zoomed Video FS digital input via 4-pin Molex" c. Digital-DIN d. "SPDIF digital input via RCA jack, SPDIF consumer-interface compliant" I also have a laptop with an optical SPDIF connector and access at work to DAT drives hooked up to Linux and Windows machines. I can see a number of options, none of which I know how to try :-( 1. Cable from Sony 7-pin connector to a connector on my SoundBlaster or laptop (5 choices here!). Find some software that knows how to grab the digital input stream from the right port and dump it to a .wav file. 2. Find some digital tape drive software that knows how to read the format the DAT Walkman writes and read from the tape directly into a PC. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is anyone on this list taking digital output from a DAT into a PC for editing? I'll be happy to create a FAQ for this if I get a wide enough range of responses. From: "Joshua" <sprung598@yahoo.com> Subject: Plextor CD burners? Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 10:01:48 -0800 Howdy Y'all.... Not surprisingly, my (stinky) Yamaha has finally bitten the dust, so I'm in the market for a new burner. I've always heard the Plextors are tanks, so it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that I'd go with one of them...any thoughts on specific models or IDE versus SCSI? I've got a SCSI2 card that I wouldn't mind putting to use if there's any real benefit from it. Looks like I can get an IDE 12x for about $180... FWIW, I've had lousy luck with Yamaha 42xx CD burners...Other people swear by 'em, this one was replaced by Yamaha after my first one kicked, then died after about a year and a half of really moderate use (along with two others from work, as well as one from a previous job - all 4260's). thanks! -Josh _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I found a web page for the Nightingale at http://pipedreamer.bizland.com/zoltrix/ and the users manual at http://www.zoltrix.com/Public/Sound/MANUAL/Nightingale.pdf and have a few follow-up questions. It's not clear to me what cabling is needed to get from the Sony DAT to the Nightingale or even what type of cable connects to the Nightingale's SPDIF connectors. Could you provide more detail? Also, does the "Audio Rack" software make the Nightingale appear to Windows like any other sound input device? Or does it let you create .wav files from Nightingale input? From: Warren Melnick <warren.melnick@astata.com> Subject: RE: DAT to computer Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 12:46:08 -0500 If you have the optical cable for the Sony and you buy the optical daughterboard for the Zoltrix you need nothing more. If you only have a coax cable for the Sony, you will have to add a coax connector to the optical daughterboard which requires 1 resistor, 1 capacitor, 1 RCA jack and perhaps a slight bit of soldering and drilling. Fairly simple process though. As for recording, it appears just like any other sound card. You just happen to be getting a bit-for-bit copy of your DAT on the S/PDIF input. If you need the Sony cable, there are several on this list who would be happy to provide you with one. I do not want to play favorites, so just ask and they will get back to you quickly. ================ Warren Melnick Director of Research and Development Astata Corporation =====Original Message===== From: Adam Pease [mailto:apease@ks.teknowledge.com] Sent: Monday, March 26, 2001 12:17 PM To: Warren Melnick; 'dat-heads@datheads.phish.net' Subject: RE: DAT to computer Warren, Thanks for your response. Many folks use Cooledit Pro, Sound Forge, SAW and other programs, but Windows' own qsimple Sound Recorder will do the job if you don't have anything more elaborate. Our 7-Pin-to-Coax cable will do the job of transferring digital audio from your DAT to the SBLive card. Please see our Web page for details. I hope that this helped.
