From: matt shudtz <pms55@columbia.edu> Subject: re:Zoltrix Nightangale warning Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 16:27:55 -0500 (EST) in response to Pat's warning.... i was the person in question who bought the used card from pat. like he said, when i first installed the card i had some pretty serious pop/click problems running D8 > coax mod > Nightingale. HOWEVER, once i installed the capacitor and resistor as detailed at http://www.hoxnet.com/zoltrix, that problem completely disappeared. the modification is really easy, even a novice can solder together the few components with a little time and patience. also, i was able to get all of the parts from radio shack online and an old computer i had lying around. so, for anyone looking for a cheap (<$50 total) and effective way of going DAT>PC, the nightingale is definately the way to go. feel free to contact me if you have any questions, but the link above is pretty self-explanitory. take it easy. ~matt

From: GgergM@aol.com Subject: Re: Matrix ?s (SBD + DAT) Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 17:03:11 EST acffh <morst@itis.com> wrote some advice about making matrix recordings which was good except for one small change. He was inaccurate about the speed of sound. The speed of sound at sea level and at room temperature is about 1,130 feet per second, not 720 feet per second. This results in sound traveling about a foot a millisecond (actually 11.3 inches per millisecond, but a foot per millisecond is close enough for use in a bar!). Besides making it easy to set the delay like acffh recommends in a matrix recording, in particular situations you can use this to your advantage. One time I recorded a band where the guitarist used multiple amps/speakers to get his tone. I put a cardioid mic right by the speaker that had his "clean" tone, and mounted a shotgun 15-20 feet away that picked up his whole array. I also panned the two mics slightly differently into my recording board. This way, when he wailed on his guitar, adding the distortion and effects, the combination of the 1! 5-20 millisecond delay and the d ifferent pan points made his guitar sound really big on the tape, which is also how it sounded live to my ears. One other handy thing about the speed of sound is that you can easily determine the length of a sound wave using the 1,130 figure. To determine wavelength, take 1,130 and divide it by the frequency. In other words, a 40 hertz note is 28.25 feet long (1,130 divided by 40 equals 28.25). This formula also works backwards. To determine the frequency, divide 1,130 by the distance in feet. You can then determine that a six foot long wave is 188.33 hertz. Ever wonder why even good car stereos can sound so thick in the upper bass/lower midrange? Now you know. A car naturally has anti-null points at around 150-200 hertz, accentuating those frequencies. - Gregg Mitchell ===================== > Now, about the delay- if you can place your mics > on the stage, that will cut down the delay time > almost to nothing. From: "david gatewood" <daveg_8@hotmail.com> Subject: LOS video Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 22:54:34 Regarding some posts about Leftovers taping policy. First, all audio is allowed whether by the board or front of board (as long as not in Steve's way) and SBD's are also given out. Video is only allowed at the bands discretion, and usually only to Dave, the guy who runs 3 decks. He told me he's not even supposed to pass those around unless the band has given specific dates that can be. Festival's can be different in that there are so many people, they may choose not to stop anyone from doing it. Anyhoo that's the scoop!!! Wayne H, I was in St. Louis for the show also, I must have walked past you a dozen times, I was the AUD taper behind Chris and Randy.....Dave _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
From: Linus P Sweers <lpsweers@juno.com> Subject: LP Mode Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 17:39:09 -0600 Hi there. I have made several DAT tapes in 32 kHz mode from 44.1 kHz sources for digital broadcasts. My resampling technique used interpolation and decimation of the digital signal. Is the quality of the 32 kHz signal that bad for others on this list? I listen to music samples on DSS systems and HDTV and now I start to wonder. I have always thought the signal was transmitted at 32 kHz to save bandwidth and processing time. Personally I prefer 48 kHz and 44.1 kHz. Other than digital broadcasts my use of 32 kHz has been limited to talking subjects, some FM broadcasts, and archiving dictation. All of you have some very good points. I like the information given on this mailing list. Thanks LPS ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Re: DAT "LP" mode Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 16:16:18 -0800 I fully understand the mechanics of it, but "how does it sound?" I think it sounds fine. Perhaps SP sounds 1%-5% better, but, with the *type* of recordings we are doing, I'm not sure SP would sound better at all. For one thing, mic'ing sound from a PA speaker that might be 60- 500 feet away is hardly an "audiophile" technique regardless of how expensive your mics are! Another issue: soundboard recordings are frequently full of hum, buzzes, etc, and are typically miced with SM57's (no response above 15KHz) - and what you get from the PA speakers is only what's coming out of the soundboard, only worse! There are many, many things we can do to optimize our recordings, but switching to "SP" is low on the list - IMHO. --Gary

I have a list which is _mostly_ available (I had a fire and will need to look and see if your pick made it through) at http://web.dreamcom.net/~windead. I would appreciate anything anyone can do in regard to this request. There's a giuy at work who's in his 60s and frequently helps with my shipping issues, so I figured I would hook the guy up. From: "Tom Baylor" <tbaylor@netins.net> Subject: DAT > CD, Nightingale Sampling Reply-To: "Tom Baylor" <tbaylor@netins.net> Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 20:34:16 -0600 Hi I've been following this thread with much interest, as I'm an PCM100 owner with some DATs to transfer and want to make an exact (or as close as I can get) copy of my tapes so I get it right. I'm also one with a SBLive soundcard and am interested in the Nightingale card. I've printed and read the Nightingale owner manual from site location previously posted by another (thanks!). What I still don't understand is: What's the difference between a sampling card and a non-sampling card? What is sampling, anyway? Why is sampling frowned upon in the dathead trade community? Other questions: How do I make an exact copy of a tape? Is there a no-brains method -or- do I have to mess with card and Cool Edit Pro recording levels and get as close as possible to the original, even if I were to have a Nightingale? Will a transfer to another dat deck be an exact copy? Seems to me that recording levels on the second deck are going to be impossible to make an exact match possible...is this correct? Nightingale cards seem to me to require an optical input. I have a 7 pin cable out of the PCM100, does the optical cable hook to the 7 pin cable and then go into the Nightingale? Sorry to ask so many questions, I'm a newbie and trying to figure this stuff out. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks! T

From: "Alf" <md2001@mclink.it> Subject: Iso: taper in Hollywood, Ca. Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 07:05:37 +0200 Yesterday I taped a concert of a great and unknown (to me) guitarist, MIROSLAV TADIC checking on the web I found this date: April 8: Miroslav Tadic and DJ Fisher P at the Knitting Factory, Hollywood, California My advice is : GO AND TAPE IT!! (and later contact me privately) here other infos about him, so if you are into nylon string guitar it worth price of ticket for sure ========================= In their January 1997 issue, the editors of GUITAR PLAYER magazine voted Miroslav Tadic one of the world's thirty most radical and individual guitarists. Tadic completed his formal education in the United States after studying in Italy and his native Yugoslavia. He has performed and recorded in a wide variety of settings and musical styles, ranging from music of the Baroque and Classical periods to blues, jazz, and rock. Tadic's performing and recording credits include projects with Terry Riley, the Los Angeles Opera with Placido Domingo, Howard Levy, Joachim Kühn, L. Shankar, Markus Stockhausen, Maria João, David Torn and Jack Bruce, among others. He is frequently heard in Europe, Japan and the United States. In 1986 Miroslav met drummer Mark Nauseef and the master of sound sculpting and recording Walter Quintus. Their collaboration has resulted in a great number of recordings and projects, which continue today and into the future. In recent years Tadic has concentrated on developing an approach to improvisation which combines and juxtaposes musical material drawn from many diverse sources, including Baroque, European classical and North Indian classical music, Eastern European folk traditions, blues, jazz, and rock. He is noted for his pioneering work in applying the elements of classical and flamenco techniques to the electric guitar. Miroslav's numerous recordings on ENJA Records, CMP Records, M.A Recordings and Omagatoki (Japan) labels have won international critical acclaim. He has written music for a number of award-winning experimental film, theater, and dance works. Since 1985 he has been teaching at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles.
