Just wondering if there is an SCMS stripper I can buy to hook between my
equipment. (Yeah, yeah, I know my equipment sucks but I dont have alot of
money for a pro cdr unit right now.)
What I've got is a Philips CDR570 as a cd recorder. It's got coax I/O.
and optical in. So I've got it hooked to a cd player via the optical cable
for cd copying. I can hook my D7 up either way, but then I cant make digi
copies of the discs I make since it writes scms.
Is there a scms stripper I can buy somewhere that I can use for: Optical out
of my cd player -> scms stripper> optical in on burner. And coax out of my
D7 -> scms stripper -> coax in on burner?. That way the discs I make can be
copied with the equipment I have.
Thanks in advance.

also will include a 24v AC adapter. The only thing is the foam in the case

Hey All -
We have a Zefiro ZA2 new in box that has been sitting on on our shelves for
awhile. I figured I would offer it up to this group before we went to Ebay
with it. We are pretty flexible on price, so email privately to discuss.
We have some great specials going on right now including our 'Featured
Special' on the HHb CDR830 with a price too low to list here!!!
If you are interested, please email privately for details as well. We look
forward to hearing from you all soon!
be well,

I just upgraded to DAT from MD but I was using a Denon DMD-1000 home deck
with digital outs
to transfer my MD masrers to the PC hard drive. There is no need nor is
there a way to adjust input levels
when doing transfers in the purely digital domain. The PC will capture the
wav's digitally at hte same levels
they were recorded at - such is the nature (and simplicity) of purely
digital transfers.
I have had multiple people confirm that Soundblaster cards digitally
resample the data no matter what.
I've also been told that there's an internal dipswitch of some sort that can
defeat the resampling but can't
verify from personal experience. I did much research and purchased an
M-Audio (Midiman) DIO2448 soundcard.
It was $130 brand new with a lifetime warranty, is very basic and offers
RCA/SPDIF digital in, Toslink in and RCA
analogue out. It's performed flawlessly and the support dept was vey helpful
when I had a driver install issue during my
W98 upgrade. Don't know if others have had this experience but mine's been
great.

Does anybody know why the Sony PCM-1 DAT external powersupply supply 4.5
volts while the total voltage supplied via the 2 AA batteries is around 2.5
volts for nicads and 3 volts for AA Alkaline batteries? Would it be OK to
run an external supply at say 3 volts instead of the 4.5 nominal?
Thanks

They probably reduce the voltage to 3v. This eats a minimum of 0.5v
(depending on the circuitry used).

It might not have enough power.

Using LP mode does NOT affect the dynamic range. This is
because the bits are used in a non-linear fashion. The trade-off is
somewhat higher distortion, but it's still much lower (at least in
terms of published THD - .09% at LP vs. .008% at SP) then many
other devices in the recording chain, especially mics.

I have one, but I'm not real interested in selling it. I just thought I'd
pass along a warning though, it won't work in any OS except Windows 98, not
even Second Edition. I have both Windows
>>
I'm wondering if you really meant to exclude WIN 98 SE for using this
soundcard.
My experience with the DATport found that WIN 98 SE loaded the DATport almost
automatically to work perfectly every time I've used it in the last few
years. Installation seemed much better than with WIN 98 as the SE has
improved USB audio drivers not included before and allowed me to only load
the initial DATport control panel software and then took over to finish up
with the USB audio drivers automatically!
Truthfully, I was a bit shocked to see how plug & play actually could work
for USB audio, especially after struggling to get the DATport working
reliably on a WIN95 laptop with no native USB audio support. See: <A

SECOND SUBJECT: SOUNDCARD RESAMPLING
I know we tend to do many things a certain way because of convenience, and
having the soundcard automatically to a needed resample can't be more
convenient.
However, audio sample rate transforming & data manipulation when done
real-time in hardware raises a lot of quality questions that might best be
avoided, especially if maximum audio quality is more important than
convenience.
The best way I know to do this is to save the file AS-IS (no resampling) and
then open this file with Cool Edit Pro software as a 32 bit depth file, do
any editing/normalization desired, then convert the sample rate to 44.1K (for
example), and finally finish by converting back to a 16 bit depth file for
immediate saving.
Doing it this way, you have dither amount/type control (actual CEP software
choices) and maximum very extended precision that seemed to me quite audible
when compared to hardware resampled versions.
I only know of using CEP for this, but other audio software may also provide
similar resampling ability.
THIRD SUBJECT: MP3 ENCODING
For those who don't mind using MP3 for personal listening or WEB posting ONLY
(not for trading purposes .. Ugh!), Syntrillium recently came out with a
shocking improvement to the already excellent MP3 encoder plug-in available
for CEP users.
A new Variable Bit Rate (VBR) MP3 capable encoder with also having a much
higher quality and seemingly 10 times faster Franhoffer IIS codec included
(the older codec is also an option).
I was recently using 192Kbps 21,000 cycle bandwidth encoding on the older CEP
version. While the audio quality was MiniDISC+ excellent, the newer VBR
encoder varies the sampling automatically from 160-260Kbps (upon demand for
resolution) and seems to produce a scintillating improvement of High
Frequency Detail with file size increase of only about 5-7% over fixed
192Kbps encoding using the same codec. Does this several times faster than
real-time on only a lowly 366MHZ Pentium that used to take up to 10 times
real-time with the older codec plugin set to maximum quality mode!
These files ( dkfworks.mp3 cfsong.mp3 h2o_beer.mp3 ) on the
SonicStudios.COM site are some of newest VBR encoded or select other
music/EFX/ambient MP3s at: <A HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/mp3.htm">
http://www.sonicstudios.com/mp3.htm</A>
VBR and the new codec seem like 'audio magic' to me and easily made my Nomad
Jukebox real fat and very happy sounding in no time at all!
Anybody else tried this new VBR MP3 encoder yet?

Subject: Pearl Jam "Grievance" SVCD
Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com
Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 00:48:40 -0800
After an endless delay :-), I am pleased to announce my VCD and
SVCD video discs of Pearl Jam "Grievance" from Letterman
4/12/00. I mastered this disc beautifully from CBS's now defunct
C-band stereo satellite feed into a 720X480 format, 2250Kbps
SVCD (sound is MP3 at 192Kbps). Running time is just under 4
minutes. I also made a VCD version for compatibility. (VCD is a
lower-quality Video CD format).
Unfortunately, there are a total of 6 different versions of the disc
with various compatibility. The coolest version is the 3-inch CD
"microVideo" disc, but it won't play on all machines.
Basically, common DVD players will only play VCD discs, not
SVCD. And many won't play CDRs, but they will play CDRWs.
The Apex and other Chinese machines will play SVCDs, which are
the best format, and they will also play CDRs.
Most computers can also play VCDs with built-in software
(Windows Media Player or Quicktime), and, they can also play
SVCDs with downloadable software such as WinDVD. SVCD will
look much more like high-quality video on a computer screen, but
VCD is at least watchable.
I also wanted to put this program onto 3-inch CDs, making what I
call "microVideo" discs. Unfortunately, the popular Apex 600A
wouldn't play the program from a 3-inch disc. I've basically held up
the project while waiting to find a name-brand 3-inch disc to test it
with. I found Memorex discs at Comp USA this week ($7.95 for 5
discs), but alas, they still would not play in the Apex 600A. The 3-
inch VCD will play in the earlier Sony DVD players that could play
CDRs, while I believe the SVCD 3-inch version will play on the
newer Apex players such as the 3-disc changer (AD-703).
In summary....
SVCD on a 5" CDR will play on all Apex and Raite models, other
Chinese DVD players, and a few selected Japanese models such
as Pioneer DV-525, 302D, 301CD, 603, and Sony DVP-S715.
There's a list of compatible players at
www.vcdhelper.com/dvdplayers.php
but it's sometimes hard to access. This version will also play on
computers with WinDVD.
SVCD on a 3" CDR will play on the newer Apex players (not 600A),
and computers with WinDVD.
VCD on a 3" CDR will play on computers and most DVD players
that can play CDRs, such as the early Sony models DVP-S7000,
5000, 3000, 7700, etc.
VCD on a 5" CDRW will play on most all DVD players, *except*
dual-laser Sony players that can play CDRs, such as the above
mentioned models :-)
If you've gotten this far, and you think you know which version you
want, email me (include your DVD player model number for a
second opinion), and I'll be happy to shoot you a copy for a blank
disc!
Enjoy!

I've heard various reports of people having problems with one or
another disc on this tree. IF YOU HAVE A DISC that doesn't play
perfectly, please don't copy it for others! (This applies to all trading
situations, not just this tree :-). Please try to have your parent
correct the disc or track it back to a good copy, or contact me for a
good copy.
BE ASSURED that none of the master discs in this tree went out
with any errors! You should have flawless discs; if not please take
the effort to get them!
