The truth about "SP vs LP" is you ARE sacrificing recording quality, fine for speech, but when archiving, I mean on location in a club OR arena it is ALWAYS best to capture audio at the best possible resolution. Then there is the quantization issue...... David
From: Stuart Gerber <stuart@mindspring.com> Subject: RE: Zoltrix Shortage Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 01:27:48 -0500 In response to this thread I have a card of the same chipset .. CMI8738 The company website for the chip itself (And their own drivers) it at www.cmedia.com.tw AudioExcel sells a similar model to the zoltrix and according to C-Media whatever models they use have the daughter board with all hookups (spdif i/o w/ coax and toslink) my model doesnt have that module .. it came with it but only has the toslink and i built my own input a yr or so ago for the older model (cmi8338) which i still have in the closet but it only supports 44.1 and last i tried didnt do so good on coax out (no toslink on here) The audioExcel board is call the MDMate .. Now from what i see on cmedia now is the DeltaDiO uses the same CMI chipset for the spdif so that is a reliable card as well. stuart g stuart@mindspring.com http://stuart.home.mindspring.com Etree.org RC5 Team http://www.distributed.net "But can i bring a few companions on this ride?" - Trey Anastasio
From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: Re: SPDIF to Analog converter? Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 01:31:10 -0800 A company called Audio Alchemy made a nice line of small, inexpensive D to A convertors until they went belly up about two years ago. These should be widely available on the used audio gear market from reputable dealers. They were widely used by many people wishing for better conversion from their CD and laserdisc players. Basic model was the DAC-man and there were several more expensive models including DAC-in-a-Box. IIRC the retail on these two units was about $100 and $150. Not sure if they had SPDIF inputs or just Toslink but I suspect at least one of them had SPDIF. Midiman also had a 20 bit model called "Flying Cow" that was widely discounted on clearance last summer when their 24 bit model was released. Should be able to find one for $130-150. Hope this helps.

From: Neal Copperman <neal@swcp.com> Subject: Mac hardware and software Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 00:26:28 -0700 I'm fairy new to the digital editing world, and had posted some questions and had a number of off-line discussions with people here in the last few months. I just thought I'd post the results of my playing, in case it's of value to anyone. First, I ordered the Midiman Delta Dio 2496 card from Core Sounds. I was happy with the service from Core Sounds (and the mics I ordered from them), as well as the ease of returning the Dio when I was unhappy with it. I am running a dual 450 MHz G4 with OS 9, and I was never able to get the Dio to work properly. When everything was lined up ok, it worked fine. But it would not clock to the input signal. When the input happened to match the internal clock, it was fine. When it didn't, I got crap. Midiman was somewhat responsive at first, but after the phone and e-mail contradicted each other, they stopped responding to my questions. There were a few things I never tried to fix the problem (turning off Virtual Memory, putting the card i other slots), but the support people didn't really imply they might be the source of the problem. Just standard problem solving techniques (move everything around, try all new cables). So I just sent it back. I the ordered the RME Digi96 sound card from SFB Electronics in the Netherlands. Good pre-sales communications from them, though the shipping rules made me nervous. $75 for tracked and insured, $16 for crossing your fingers and hoping it arrived. Which it did, in a somewhat battered but still intact box that they left on my doorstep without a signature <sigh>. The card costs $255, and has a pair of digital inputs and outputs (SPDIF and coax). First try, the card didn't work at all. But in the troubleshooting section of the documentation, it said Slot 2 on a G4 (next to video card) wouldn't work, and naturally, that's where I'd been putting my cards. (Hmmm, wonder if that was part of the Dio's problem.) Ah well, at least here the problem was well documented. Once I moved it to another slot, it worked like a charm. It automatically recognizes the clock on the internal signal. For the Dio, you had to manually set the control panel to exernal clock and pick the speed (which, for me, never worked). Here, when an external clock is present, it automatically recognizes and synchs to it. Worked like a charm right off the bat. For software, I found a cute little progra called Felt Sound Studio. I haven't seen it mentioned here, but from what I've seen, it's the easiest to use, cheap 2-track editor for the Mac out there. It's a $35 shareware program, and you get a 14-day full feature version to sample. (That's 14 days of use, not 14 contiguous days, which is an even nicer arrangement.) It provides all the basic filters. I've only been using amplify and attenuate. The display isn't quite as nice as some of the other things I looked at, but the fact that it trivially cuts and pastes makes editing a snap. You can be up and running with this without any help in about 5 minutes. It will record in the background, and the latest version has a file size cap of 2G. (One of my original problems was that I wanted to record a DAT while I was at work, but if you couldn't cap the filesize, it would fill up Gigs of silence and take everything down.) It's available from http://www.felttip.com Anyway, I like playing with it, and wanted to share this info with any other frustrated Mac users. Thanks to the folks who helped me struggle along with the more complicated and non-functioning products. neal
From: Delano <bluesky@mindspring.com> Subject: U2 info for tapers Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 03:39:19 -0500 I just returned from U2's Charlotte show and IT WAS SO EASY to sneak stuff in and tape. I wished later that I had taken a video camera after I saw their amazing stage design. There is a big "U" that encircles the audience closest the stage (which Bono runs around). U2 was fantastic. Go get 'em tapers. Take Care, Delano http://www.mindspring.com/~bluesky/index.htm
