From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: guided by voices fillmore tapers? Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 17:25:05 EST hey guys is anyone here going to tape guided by voices at the fillmore on Monday April 2? I really do'nt feel like taping them this time, we've taped them the past few years at gigs, and this time I feel like having a break. As long as I know there will be other tapers there, I will feel better if I decide to not tape. I also have come to realize that I've almost never listened to my own recordings (or to other people's recordings) of Guided by Voices concerts, unless I'm making copies for other people. I just like going to the shows and being with the rabid manic GbV fanatics who live and breathe Guided by Voices on a minute-by-minute regiment. So I am very torn right now. Any reassurance would be greatly appreciated, email to me (gaobest@aol.com) or the list. Thanks a million! Mike bwt: B/P dat copy from analog M1 tapes of D5-recorded concerts by Thompson Twins (1983 or 1984), Frankie Goes to Hollywood (1985?), and/or Pretenders (5-1-84 RCMH). Or of Mr Tillitson's 1984 D5-recorded show of Til Tuesday (before they hit it big with "Voices Carry"). Admittedly I've not played any of these tapes since 1995 or so... so by offering this B/P I will have an opportunity to listen to any of these tapes.

The frequency response of my tuner > stops at 15 khz and my D8 stops at 14.5 khz, . . . . The same can be said for audience recordings when the mics are far enough from the stage that only PA sound reaches them. The rule of thumb is that higher frequencies roll off at about 6db for each doubling of distance. So, even if there were audible 20Khz sound 15 ft from the speakers, (not impossible, but not a given either) it will be -12db at 60 ft and -18 db at 120 ft compared to the mid-range sound. A good PA might have pre-emphasis applied to the HF speakers to compensate, but the fact remains that capturing anything between 15 Khz and 24 Khz from the audience is problematic at best - except when taping very close to the stage. This is one of the reasons why it is hard to hear the difference between LP and 44/48 on tapes made from deep in the audience. This isn't to suggest that tapes should be made in LP mode except when the circumstances demand it, though. There are other factors besides HF response. Bob
From: mike lyons <mikethedj@yahoo.com> Subject: digital editing Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 14:52:28 -0800 (PST) I just taped a show with the resulting recording having a persistent, continuous buzz. It wasn't coming out of the PA but that's neither here nor there. I was wondering if anyone in DATHeads land knows if there are any good, accurate (ie as lossless as possible) digital editing software packages available for a PC that I might use to mute or remove whatever frequency range this buzz is associated with. Obviously it would be preferable to be able to customize the eq frequency bands to be narrow enough to mute the noise while leaving as much useful data - music - as possible. Any thoughts or is this just a fantasy of mine? thanks in advance, Mike BW tax : 3 b&p's for cd clones of the Allmans @ Beacon, NYC, NY 3/22/01 - Senn. Miami was a bitch with patdowns..so be prepared to crouch what ever you plan t bring in...as for were to tape! I ran my CSB's>M1 from the Floor directly in the middle of the "Heart" Since people are running from one side of the Heart to the other chasing Bono down as he runs around the ramp..most of the time I had no one near me :) And the sound is perfect their... due to the speaker monitors that are place high up in the light rigs and are facing straight down into the heart! I believe my tape sounds great for just having the CSB's! But to get into the Heart...you need to get to the venue early as they only let the first 300 people in there! I am willing to trade my copy from the Heart 3/26/01...and a copy from the first night 3/24/01(B&K's4021>EAAPSP3>SBM1)taped directly center just outside the Heart, in trade for any of the other shows from this tour! Please nice sounding copies only! Enjoy this tour...it is going to be good! From: "Dave Morrison" <davemor@gte.net> Subject: Newbie a/d question Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 18:58:13 -0500 I'm still assembling my gear and I keep seeing references to the Apogee AD1000 a/d convertor. However, it appears that this is no longer made, correct? What was it that made this so universally used? How long ago did it go out of production? How much did it cost originally? Do they ever come up for sale used and how much is a reasonable price? If they are impossible to find, what is the current "best" a/d unit available for battery-powered, 2-channel use? Thanks and sorry for all the questions. Dave http://www.morrisonphotographics.com

From: APlay1@aol.com Subject: Taping U2 Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 20:42:44 EST For taping the show, it is best to be a section in front of the stage. There are no speakers hung directly on the sides of the stage and it sounded a bit muffled. There are speakers facing behind the stage and that had a very good sound. Andy

From: O Nelson <onelson@enteract.com> Subject: Holmes Brothers tour dates Date: Sun, 01 Apr 2001 10:28:15 -0500 I saw these guys last night. I've heard they're taper-friendly, though I wasn't able to confirm that. It's a very cool mixture of blues, gospel, soul, folk. Mostly blues and gospel. Funky and fine. Check them out.
