one other thing to consider with LP mode. it is definitely true that LP mode tapes are more likely to have errors and are more
demanding when archiving. this is because there are fewer bits per unit time and also because the error correction on the 32 kHz
LP mode is therefore less robust. a number of errors which would be inaudible on a traditional 44.1 kHz tape may be audible on the
32 kHz LP mode tape.
this is something i've noticed with my collection (which is about 10 years old now).
i believe that it's readily provable that because of the non-linear encoding that each bit represents more information in 32 kHz LP
mode and therefore it is more damaging when a bit fails.

A while back I did a tade with someone and I sent
him everything he wanted but he shorted me what
he owed me so I hope some one here can come up
with 3 cdrs fo me so I can complete these 2
shows....I need discs 1+2 from 11-6-98 WSP and
disc 2 of 4-9-00 also WSP. The source is akg 480
on both but if you think yours may sound better
Id prefer to have 1 show with 1 source on the
mics. . Thanks

While browsing for some used PC hardware I ran across this:
http://forums4.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=3D45&threadid=3D395059
Scroll down a bit, and under soundcards you'll see:
"9 New Retail CMI High Performance PCI Sound Cards with Drivers- 4 Channel=

It doesn't say Zoltrix but I'm 99% sure that's what he's selling. Caveat=
emptor! I do not know this person and cannot attest to his/her=
reliability. Proceed with caution.
Given the recent shortage of these cards, I hope someone out there finds=
this useful.

"Filtering" cannot remove a buzz. Hums and feedback, yes, but a
"buzz" is a hum + a lot of spurious garbage.
However, I've had very good luck removing buzz with Noise
Reduction in Cool Edit. You will need several things --
a part of the tape which is totally silent except for the buzz -
you may need to run through NR several times --
you may lose some "musicality" in the process.

P.s. on using computer NR to remove buzz.
It would help a lot if the buzz level is constant.
If it changes from time-to-time, it would help (but not be absolutely
necessary) to get a different noise sample for each area that the
buzz is different.

i realize this might be a little off topic, but since you guys are the most
technically capable people I've met on the web, i had to give it a try. I
live in NYC, and I use my Sony portable discman just baout everyday. I didnt
expect it to last to long, and recently started acting up. Now, when I put a
disc in, it spins it, but then I have to skip to the first track, it just
sits at zero...but nothing happens. I can skip all the way up to like 50
and nothing happens....Does anybody have any idea whats wrong? Is it just
broken? Its not a totally cheap player, it cost about $130 a little more
than a year ago.....
if I cant fix it (which I dont expect to do), does anybody have any
suggestions for a good, solid portable?
Should I just buy cheap one since its most likely going to get trashed?
should I think about mini-disc?
any thoughts would be great.....

Subject: Where does Cool Edit Pro save its settings/presets?

Hi!
I recently formatted my hard drive to upgrade to a new windows version.
In that process I really wanted to keep the presets I have made in
Cool Edit Pro the last few years... so I copied the entire cool edit
direcortory to another drive before formatting.
After reinstalling, I am not able to find the old presets... Does
anybody
know where these are saved? (I am not thinking of the noise reduction
fft files, but the presets in other dialogue windows...)
Any help appreciated!

I was EQing the Wild Strawberries show that I taped a few weeks ago, and I
noticed that some of the show seems to be missing. I've uploaded a clip of
it (zipped MP3) to http://www.theneedle.net/skip.zip)
I've never noticed this in anything else that I've taped. I was using
CSC->M1 on a sony DGP60. It isn't like there is blank space, you can hear
the crowd, and then it suddenly jumps about a second into the song. There
isn't an extra start ID at this point, a second or so seems to have
disappeared..
Any ideas?
thanks,
rudy
