From: "Sherm Clow" <sclow@das.state.ut.us> Subject: Mac Hardware Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 16:07:23 -0600 Mac users with Firewire may want to take a look at the new MOTU 828 box = (www.motu.com). After waiting forever, we finally get some cool hardware. = This box ain't cheap, but it sure does lots of stuff...several analog I/O = ports, digital I/O, and mic preamps (so you can record direct to harddrive)= . The 828 also comes with some powerful software. Best of all, it uses = Firewire into the computer avoiding the deficiencies of the USB port. = Look around for good pricing...maybe they will produce a simpler and = cheaper box in the future, but until then, the 828 looks like a great = device.

If you can hook me up, you'll probably be much happier than me in the long run. I really am in pursuit of the NOLA show. Thanks, Rich

From: "rob landis" <nocturnalsunshine@hotmail.com> Subject: problems w/ Sony DDS Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 00:37:52 -0400 ok... hate to be the bearer of bad news, but i feel obligated to make this public... i just got my DA30 MKII back from the shop; i took it in for what i thought was a transport problem. the deck would flash "error 02 (reel/capstan error)" right after i put the (Sony DDS) tape in. usually the tape would get mangled a bit, or "ate". the deck couldn't load the tapes properly, i guess. one time, i ff/rr'd the tape, recorded the one minute silence, and when i started recording the music, the deck immediately ate the tape. i was using Sony DDS 60m tapes, the DG60P. out of my most recent box of 10, 3 (or was it 4?) tapes got ate. the box before that, it was 2. i've used Sony tapes for 4 or 5 years now, and have always had good results, until now. anyway, my deck is a only a few years old, was recently serviced, and is in good working order. when i took it into the shop, they were unable to find anything wrong with it. said the entire transport, capstan and all, is perfectly fine- and they looked hard for a problem. i've done business w/ this shop (F.E.T. Electronics in Van Nuys, CA) several times in the past w/ excellent results, so i'm going to trust them on this... and i'm going to point the finger of blame at Sony. i remember reading a post from Marc Nutter a couple weeks ago, in which he mentioned having very similar problems w/ the Sony DDS tapes recently. he pointed out that Sony recently lowered the standard of quality for their tapes, and listed specific shortcomings of the new ones... guess they don't make em like they used to... my deck, the DA30, is notoriously picky about what kind of blanks it will take. it doesn't accept 90m's at all. so maybe most people wouldn't experience this problem, or at least not this bad. i just want to give a heads-up, tho. i know you guys reading would be as overjoyed as i would to have your deck eat a just-recorded master. so be forewarned. if you and/or your deck is picky about blanks, or if you just want to be safe, i suggest you avoid recently manufactured Sony DDS tapes. hope i haven't overreacted here...this post seems justified to me. anyone have input or experiences to share on this? i just got done cloning a Fuji tape, and that went fine... i wish i could say "i've used 2 boxes of Fujis w/ out problem" to further support my claims here, but it would be quite a while before i could do that. and a lot of tapes could be eaten in that time... think of our children! may your tapes be error-free, and never eaten by the deck. ;) take care, rob _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
From: "Peter Albee" <mingusalbee@hotmail.com> Subject: A re-Introduction Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 06:13:22 -0000 How are you all doing. My name is Pete Albee. I would like to say Hi to all those I have traded with in the past and Hello to all those I have never met. I am a DAT-head from a little while back, from like '95 to '98 and it's time for me to start building my collection again. I like all music, but I would say the bulk of my collection is Jazz. Have currently around 500hrs in my collection. Will be looking for trades, and will pursue in greater depth down the road. Now I am just saying Hi and re-acclamating myself to the group. (Do people still introduce themselves to the forum before they start posting or has that tradition been retired?) Anyhow will be looking forward in trading with you all in the future. Ciao for now. From: Paulo Vieira <mezzanine@softhome.net> Subject: Yo La Tengo taping policy? Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 16:19:58 +0100 Hi all! Does anyone know YLT thoughts about taping their shows? I'm attending their show next friday and I don't feel like stealthing, but I'd consider mic stands if they're ok with it. What about soundboard patches, is that a possibility? Thanks. -- Paulo http://paginas.teleweb.pt/~wave76/
From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: Pop/crackle problem in one channel on SPDIF transfers... solutions? Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 11:27:03 -0700 I've done as much advance research as possible but still lacking a solution - all suggestions appreciated. I have a new M-1 w/SBM-1 and am just now attempting transfers to PC after two weeks of taping. Setup: W98 2nd ed. / AMD-K6-266 CPU (MMX equiv) / 256 meg RAM / two matching IBM 7200 RPM hard drives / M-Audio DIO2448 digital soundcard with SPDIF I/O and Toslink optical I/O / Sonic Sense modified Sony RK-DA10P 7 pin to RCA/SPDIF coax cable - has one leg for input and one for output (in theory I can use the input to be in a digital chain or use the output to do transfers to PC. I have previewed the tape through amp and speakers and also through the headphone jack of the M-1 - tape is totally clean. When first attempting to transfer I had terrible pos and clicks constantly and discovered that I needed to use the M-Audio control panel software to analyze the incoming SPDIF signal and set the master clock. Having done this I now review the complete wav files after transfer and discover a low level crackling audible during all the quiet portions of the music on one channel only. There are also a half dozen spots in which a large pop/spike appears in that same channel. At least two of these have flattened tops - not clipped, just flattened. IN one of those cases there was also a blank spot on the other channel (flat line). In all others the symptom was only on one channel. I'll be grateful for any and all suggestions. Please note that I do NOT have any other connections made to the soundcard whent he transfer is being made, only the SPDIF in is connected. Reply direct or on the list. Will offer 2 disc CDR set of Poppa Chubby at Chicago B.L.U.E.S. (NYC) 3/30/01 first set - to anyone with helpful suggestions (I can't make the transfer yet!) Regards, Owen O'Neill

From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: Re: answering my own question on DIO 2448 pops/crackles Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 13:27:59 -0700 For those who've considered this card, please note the following facts I discovered today when doing more research to solve my pops/clicks problem. M-Audio customer service acknowledges this as a problem (this had previously been pointed out to me by someon on this list). It is not however, a problem with every DAT machine - it works with some and not with others. The problem is consistent, not intermittent. If you buy one and it works you're all set and it's a great card for $110-130 retail. I used mine to do digital MD transfers for 8 months before upgrading to DAT and it was perfect. It's not compatible with my M-1 but I was fortunate enough to find a dealer offering me a decent trade-in towards a Delta 2496 card (same manufacturer but much better crystal) - not subject to the jitter problems of the 2448 and it allows you to lock in the master clock signal (the 2448 does not and this appears to be the source of the problem). Although I've answered my own question the BW tax offer in my previous still applies - goes either to the first three folks who tried offering solutions or in lieu of that to the first three respondents. If you wanted to use the 7-pin jack as a mic/line input, you'd need a mic/line pre-amp and an A-to-D converter. The Zefiro InBox/Denecke AD-20 would do the job, with attenuator cables to handle line input levels. A few years ago, we repaired one of our old TCD-D3's mic/line input jack. If you can still get the part from Sony (1-800-488-7669), any good technician should be able to do it for you in under an hour. From: mikeedmo@voicenet.com Subject: FM tuner/capture cards for PC? Date: Tue, 3 Apr 101 16:47:34 -0400 (EDT) Hi all, I'm currently recording FM broadcasts on my PC via the analog inputs of my Midiman Audiophile 2496 card (from line-out on my stereo receiver). Overall I'm quite happy with the results, but I've been wondering if it might be possible to digitally record using a PC tuner card, if such a thing exists. That is, the tuner would be directly visible to the system as a digital audio source, rather than piggybacking through a soundcard as some models appear to (e.g. the Hauppauge WinTV-radio model 401). Has anyone had any experience with a setup like this? In a similar vein, do any FM tuners exist that have S/PDIF output? Thanks, Michael
