From: gthrush@du.edu Subject: Portable "Pro" CDR... Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 12:57:09 -0600 (MDT) Wouldn't it be nice if one of the major suppliers, like HHB or Tascam, would produce a portable CDR with XLR balanced analog I/O, AES/EBU balanced digital I/O, no SCMS, and a rechargeable battery with a life of 4-6 hours on a full charge? Just a thought...
From: Sebastian Boschert <sebi@foo.dyndns.org> Subject: ISO: Info on Terratec EWX 24/96 Sound card Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 21:05:10 +0200 Hello! I am looking to buy a new sound card and I was definately looking at the Terratec EWX 24/96. Has anybody on this list actually used one of these units? I'd like to know how well it performs on computer games (yeah, sometimes even I have to play Quake 3 against my friends *G*). Is the card able to defeat SCMS? If yes, can I use it as a SCMS stripper (connect DAT deck #1 to the digital input and DAT #2 to the digital output and let the card strip the SCMS signals)? Would you recommend this card? Thanks in advance for your help! -- Sebastian Boschert E-Mail: sebi at foo dot dyndns dot org ICQ: 2010141
From: GuySonic@aol.com Subject: Something really different: "Shakedown Street" Deadhead Land Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 15:09:05 EDT An Exclusive Social-Drama Recording Just posted a 19 minute super high quality (27 MEG) MP3 file that's a virtual reality surround-sound ambient tour of Shakedown Street recorded in the heart of Deadhead Land 1993. URL: http://www.sonicstudios.com/dedhland.htm INTRODUCTION: Friday evening (after the next to the last Eugene Grateful Dead Concert) in the campground inside the Autzen Stadium (Eugene, OR) parking lot. If you have ever experienced (or never experienced) what 'Shakedown Street' was about, you're in for a treat that is without equal, as those who have been there will (only partially) remember. But, like those who claim to have experienced the 60's, if you remember 'Shakedown Street,' you probably were not really there! Here's an opportunity to "be there again" for the first time! Comments very welcome about posted recordings like this; there's a lot more waiting in the vaults! It tries to, but you can't make perfect copies disk->disk unless you're lucky. It's better to use EAC (www.ExactAudioCopy.de) to extract the .wav files, then burn them from hard disk. Seth
From: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Subject: SONIC AD2K--DAT and Laptop recording information Reply-To: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 14:31:56 -0600 Hey All, We just wanted to let everyone know about some recent developments with the SONIC AD2K+. As the information on our website http://www.sonicsense.com (or http://members.telocity.com/~nutter , if the first one isn't working) has generated a ton of questions, we wanted to share a few new insights. We are having great experiences using of the AD2K+ in 24-bit mode in conjunction with the Digigram VX Pocket and SONY Vaio laptop. As the 2K+ allows us to record in 24-bit and 16-bit at the same time, we have been able to make DAT tapes at the same time as recording to the VAIO. In listening to the results, the difference is stunning!!! We can now offer comparison CD's to anyone who has a 24-bit soundcard (like the SEK'D Prodif Plus) or outboard DA converter, like the Lucid DA9624, and 24-bit capable software like Sound Forge 5.0 or SEK'D Samplitude or Red Roaster. Contact us at nutter@sonicsense.com if interested in copies. Specifically for DAT users: On a similar note, we have been able to study the word-length reduction modes quite a bit further. By using the AD2K+'s digital through mode, we are taking the 24-bit recordings, playing through the AD2K+ and comparing the seven 16-bit word length reduction modes. While we still like the 16NS3 mode a lot, I also suggest checking out the 16NN2 setting as we are finding that it most closely resembles the 24-bit source. Happy Recording Everybody!!! Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 18:44:52 -0400 Just wondering if anyone out there is planning on taping The Jazz Mandolin Project on 4/21 at Higher Ground in Burlington, VT. I'll be there, but I'm not too familiar with the in's and out's of taping at that venue. Anyone have any tips? Also, if it comes out ok, I'm willing to spin clones for anyone looking to trade... From: "Ryan Haskell" <ryan_haskell@hotmail.com> Subject: Best "Y" cable for D-8 daisy chains? Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 18:58:06 -0400 I'm sure this subject has been around the bush a few times, but of course I never paid attention until now that I actually need a cable. I'm looking for recommendations on a daisy-chain in/out SPDIF cable for my D8, 7-pin to RCA male & RCA female. I found the RK-DA10 modified cable ($129) offered by SonicSense, and the 7-Pin-Coax-I/O cable ($50) from Core Sound. But the best so far looks like the 7-pin shielded cable from American Digital for $119, at http://www.american-digital.com/s7io.html. Anyone have any feelings about the worthiness of these three, or any other recommendations? Any help would be greatly appreciated. From: CatalystX <catalystx@home.com> Subject: Re: MOTU 828 Reply-To: catalystx@home.com Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 23:45:27 -0700 The best advantage of the 828 is that you can use it with a PowerBook to record almost anywhere. It's even got a two good mic pre-amps with XLR/TRS connections and coax S/PDIF input/ouput, so you could get a killer 24 bit recording of show with some great mics or patch into a chain if need be. I've got the MOTU 2408mkII, which is nicer interface for a desktop computer. Of course, this is more professional than most people need, since it costs $850+ new. But it's also nice not worrying about bad synch and resampling problems. From: Warren Melnick <warren.melnick@astata.com> Subject: Re: techno-talk and sound Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 07:10:59 -0400 Absolutely! Dvd seems to be where the convergence is starting. Ps2 will already play all dvds and audio cds. It also happens to be a linux box, although nobody has exploited (in the good sense of the word) its uses that way, they are there for the taking. Another popular linux box is the tivo. Expect microsoft's xbox to take it a step further. Regardless of my personal feelings about microsoft, you are most likely going to see more convergence as ms is likely to join their "new" ultimate tv (they recently bought replay tv) with the xbox, which will most likely run windows xp. At that point you have a single box that will be a computer, a powerful video game, a tv time shifter, play dvds, cds, mp3s, wmas and wavs. If it can take a high-speed network card it might jus replace the home pc for 40% of the homes out there! Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 06:55:11 -0700 (PDT) I have a DA-20mkII in perfect condition with all original packaging, manual, etc. that was purchsed from Sonic Sense about 3 yrs ago. I'd like to trade it for a D8 or comparable portable in similarly excellent condition. My deck has very low head hours for being 3 yrs old. Used mostly as the play deck when doing clones. I have never had any problems with it at all. It's been a great machine. Also have an Audio Magic Presto II digital coax cable I'd throw in for similar connectors for a portable. Any questions welcome. peace, Donald __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/
