DAT certainly couldn't support 24/96 with any reasonable recording length.
I doubt we will see any more new portable DAT machines of any sort introduced,
the format is on it's way out. Maybe not even any more home/studio units either.

Hi Everyone
I have a mono recording that I cut and pasted into a stereo recording with
Cool Edit 96. I was wondereing if anybody here (are you reading this Gary?)
has experimented with any of Cool Edit's features to give their recordings a
little more spatial width / depth and life. Any help or suggestions would be
appreciated, but I prefer not to run out and buy new software. Thanks.

If you need to resample, you can always buy a Behringer UltraMatch 2000. It
is a sample rate converter, format converter, SCMS stripper, Jitter remover,
and so much more.
I have been following the Sampling rate thread, which is why I am posting

personally, i thought the photons were too bright for stealthing, so i stuck
mine in with my non-stealth gear.
for stealth use i found a similarly-styled keyring LED flashlight packaged
in a soft plastic holder the size of a large postage stamp that emits a
dimmer yellow/amber light...easier to cover up (since it's not as bright),
and more like the light on an old-fashioned watch (as opposed to the indiglo
gleam of a blue photon). the company is online at www.lumatec.com;
but i don't see the model i got; closest approximation online is called the
FlashCard...but the one online looks at least twice as big, since mine
is no more than 1" wide and 1.5" long...
i bought mine at a travel-products store for $5.95...

The white ones are, the red ones are fine. (I also hold mine inside
my fist, so I can control how much light leaks.)
I also have an led light that's sold as a "map light" and straps to
one finger.

I've been to many shows at IP and all the tix I've ever purchased say "no
cameras, recording or bottles". My actual experience has been that if the
artist allows/encorages taping they permit it. Not sure about mic stands - I
went to a Govt Mule show there in spring '99 and there were lots of stands -
have never seen them any other time. I do know that people tape with
non-stealth gear at taper friendly shows but the policy isn't clear. I've
always done my stealth taping there from just behind and the the right of
the soundboard (upstairs on the mezzanine). It gets you above and away from
the crowd noise and there's a good line of sight/sound direct to the stacks.
IIRC there's a railing that you could clamp or tape your mic holder onto.
There's also a small ledge just below it at waist level on which you can
place an equipment case but you'll need to strap it on with gaffer's tape,
as the shelf has a slight angle down and out towards you. The security
personnel have not checked my small shoulder bag when I entered at any of
the taper friendly shows but have done so at many others. They had warning
posters up everywhere at this week's Derek Trucks / Eric Johnson ALC show,
stating that taping equipment and cameras would be confiscated. Oddly
enough, they didn't check my bag (I had crotched the gear so it was not an
issue). I missed the first two songs of Derek's set due to a screwup on my
part but got the remainder of it and have an excellent recording of Eric
Johnson. If you have the option to do bass roll off I suggest using it when
taping from the mezzanine. The location in the upper rear of the room
creates standing waves that enhance bass boominess a bit. I roll off at 69hz
and get consistently good results.

Owen

wow. does anybody else find it curious that the dead didn't play Autzen
Stadium in July of '93 (they were there in August)? Also, the last year
that they played that venue was '94, in June.
------------------------------
>>
The date was (intentionally) changed to protect the innocent!
1993 was the next to the last time the Grateful Dead venue appeared in
Eugene, as was mentioned on the web page.
However, I may (or may not) have the July date wrong. I now have temporarily
mislaid this tape (fire that librarian!), but if the Dead played Friday, SAT,
and SUN in Eugene '93, if so, then the July 31st evening time noted is
correct for this recording.
Maybe there are some Grateful Dead historians who might verify if there was a
Friday concert performance in 1993 (as I recall) like there was at the GD's
last and final Eugene appearance in 1994. If not, then the "shakedown street"
recording date might be better changed to Saturday, August 1, 1993
I hope any confusion about dates hasn't detracted too much of the generous
fun offered with sharing this recording.
Download of the DEADHEAD LAND (a 27 MEG size file) recording in a 25 hour
period was over 140 times! This pushed my site's bandwidth burden .5 to over
2.5 GB of data during this same period!
DOWNSIDE: I might have to pull this file off (temporarily) if the hosting
company rightly complains.
Regardless of the proper date, I can tell (at least by my site's
through-the-roof bandwidth usage) that at least some of you have found this
DSM ambient recording (done by the old 'GUY' here) worth the download time!
Thanks so much to all of you who quickly grabbed this recording for the (1
above) warm posted response (so far). What a remarkable recording community
we've got going here!

Leonard Lombardo

Hi,
Any Astronomy store, Sky & Telescope dot com etc can supply red flashlites.
Or any store specializing in stage lighting can offer you sheets of red gel
pretty cheap. Ask for the smallest size sheet and it will last you and your
friends a life time ;)

Subject: PC with ZA2 and Zoltrix Nightingale soundcards
Date: Sat, 07 Apr 2001 15:24:06 +0100
Greetings,
I'm back after 6 months mostly off-line.
Expect some trade and B&P offers soon.
I think I've completed all my pending trades,
but if not get in touch and let me know.
This is for all those ZA2 owners out there who have been thinking
they'd like to have a bit more horsepower inside that old box.
I recently (OK, it was in novermber) upgraded my PC by purchasing
one of the last motherboards with ISA slots.
The Gigabyte GA-71XE isn't the latest and greatest, but was still
in production in novemeber. With a cost-effective 750 MHz Duron
I was able to re-use my old PC100 RAM. The board can be fitted
with a 1000MHz Athlon if you're so inclined, but I think you need
faster memory.
Best of all, it has no motherboard sound chip to get in the way.
It has two ISA slots so I brought along my old modem too
(hey I did this on the cheap)
I spent a while getting the BIOS to set aside the right I/O
addresses for the ISA cards, and it all seems to work now.
I neded a new case (all the new boards are ATX shaped and need
more watts than my old box had), but I re-used my 2 HDs and CDR.
I also bought a zoltrix nightingale soundcard for the soundblaster
and midi capability. For $30 with optical I/O how could I go wrong?
I tested data flow from HD1 -> ZA2 -> zoltrix -> HD2 using two
CoolEdit windows (play + record) for an hour at 48 kHz and got
exact bit match on the results. In the reverse direction I used
HD1 -> CoolEdit -> zoltrix -> ZA2 -> CDwav -> HD2.
I've only tested with nothing else is going on so I don't know how
much additional load I can put on it. Nor have I tried playing and
recording on the same HD, but the fast one will probably handle it.
So why keep the ZA2 when the zoltrix gives me digital I/O?
1) real-time sample-rate conversion
2) the zoltrix digital I/O does not support 32 kHz, although it
happily plays all sample rates through the analogue output.
