Date: Sun, 08 Apr 2001 10:32:40 -0600 As I've been looking for the perfect solution to the whole stealth flashlight thing for months, ironically enough, the co-owner of my mics whips out a Photon light and say he's had one for a friggin year. You can get 'em on Ebay for 9.95 and the best stealth color is blue :-P -Josh >> The Photon Micro-Light (made in USA by an Oregon Company!) is one of the smallest and brightest LED keychain light to appear, and can be purchased at many variety drugstores at least in Oregon. However there are two features of the Photon that do not lend well to stealth besides being Mega bright. 1) The LED protrudes way out of the case and poses a problem with being highly visible everywhere unless extra measures are taken to shield all side light. Shielding with your hand may or may not be enough as some of these (depending on the color and brightness) can back-light up your fingers to glow in an unnatural manner that's bound to amaze your neighbors. 2) The keychain ring is far too small to fit anything other than the small finger of an adult's hand and cannot be easily operated or palmed on the usual middle fingers that normally allows for easy palming of these types of keychain lights. The connecting hardware on the Photon is far too short to be easily palmed even if the keyring was made larger. Obviously, to use the Photon, many alterations are needed to make it work as desired. A better (and far less bright but way bright enough) keychain light is made by Luminex. While this model seems harder to find, it is far more suitable for this purpose with a much larger size keyring that fits any finger of choice and with 5X longer (1.5") connecting hardware between the keyring and the squeeze light. The longer connecting hardware on the Luminex also swivels to always allow the squeeze-light portion be laying flat in the hand; this makes for effortless palming, allowing the light to sit in your palm's heel area where just folding your fingers naturally easily reaches the light to operate it discreetly and quickly when needed. I've seen this light in Red, Yellow, or Green colors, but that was at least a year ago and there may be other colors available now. I may be able to source this light for having in-stock if it cannot be easily found elsewhere. Over the years of looking for the best stealth keychain light, the Luminex is so far the best I've found for stealth recording purposes of illuminating the LCD displays on MiniDisc and DAT decks. After >speaking with the service center I was informed that its routine to modify >the processor in this unit and that they refuse to modify it back to its >original functionality. a couple comments on the philips recorders i didn't know that the 880 supported the "swap trick" but i guess i am wrong about that (i thought it was only the 870 model that did this, or maybe it is only some of the early 880 models too?) i thought the 880 was released by philips under pressure to remove the swap trick, plus also that it corrected the unnecessary resampling that the 870 does at 44.1khz even when fed 44.1k input i know several people with 870s, including me, and all of us have had problems with this model i feel this unit is a piece of crap; i don't use my 870 for making CD-Rs since it routinely eats "audio" CD-Rs and "audio" CD-RWs, and it routinely burns discs with tons of errors on them (either when using audio blanks or computer blanks with the swap trick) i bought the 870 at the same time as my PC and when i was first getting into CD-R burning in general and wanted to explore both the pluses/minuses of PC vs. stand-alone burning but thx to many numerous problems with the 870, i was forced into the PC route all the way (i'm actually glad of that now as i have found the PC method to be infinitely more powerful in editing capabilities, speed of burning/copying, being able to use computer blanks perfectly, no SCMS issues, etc)....my 870 sits neglected in my stereo rack, only used for occasionally playing CD-R discs that my old denon deck doesn't like, and sometimes i try to use it for making quick cassette to CD-R transfers which i then extract the audio off of on my PC for editing and real "mastering" a friend of mine bought an 870 at SEARS and the unit completely failed to burn CD-Rs after only one month of use; he brought it in for service and they did fix his burning problem (i forget what the explanation was), and he was worried that the swap trick would be "cured" as well, but after service he can still do the swap trick i think that the swap trick is actually a bad thing anyway, since i think that the during the OPC step on the audio blank the laser may calibrate itself for a certain type of CD-R dye, but if you then pull out the disc which the OPC was based on, and replace it with a computer blank, you could have a disc burned with less than optimum laser settings i'm glad that there are much better choices nowadays for "affordable" CD-R stand-alone burners than what we were limited to a few years ago (the philips burners), and people don't have to worry about the crazy stuff like swap tricks and SCMS!!! the lower price of audio CD-Rs makes it alot less worthwhile to mess with swap tricks anywho - j -
From: "Steve Vahey" <sting27@epix.net> Subject: ISO: U2 @ Philips Arena in Atlanta 3/30/01 - DAT SOURCE Reply-To: "Steve Vahey" <sting27@epix.net> Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2001 19:02:31 -0400 I haven't yet managed to track down anyone who made a nice solid DAT recording of U2 in Atlanta on 3/30. I've seen some minidisc versions, but I would prefer to try to track down a solid DAT version with nice mics first. Anybody get it? I have an extensive collection of U2 from all tours totaling over 400 shows, including 100+ shows straight from master tapes/DAT's. If you're looking for any shows from the current tour I have lots of versions of those already as well. I only have 1 DAT deck at this point, so I can only offer cd-r masters in return (either cd-audio or SHN). Thanks for the space, Steve

From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: batteries on airplanes Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2001 20:49:40 -0400 (EDT) On another mailing list (digiphish), people have been discussing carrying sealed lead-acid batteries on commercial flights, and the problems they've had doing so. Charles Quinn found the following regulations: 49CFR172.101 has all of your answers. http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_00/49cfr172_00.html Look under "Batteries, wet, non-spillable, electric storage (UN2800)" for their classification: the government specifically allows them to be carried on airplanes. He suggests printing that out, and finding out (in advance, if you expect problems) the person at the airport who deals with hazardous material shipments, and speaking with him. Then, day of departure, if you have a problem at security, ask them to call him for verification. Seth

From: "Brian Kelley" <bpkelley@myexcel.com> Subject: FS: Phil 4/13 Sunrise & 4/16 Birmingham (MUST SELL!!!) - REPOST Date: Sun, 08 Apr 2001 20:56:41 -0700 Due to prior commitments and a sufficient lack of funds, I desperately need to sell TWO PHIL TIX. One ticket is for 4/13 Sunrise (opening night) in Ft Lauderdale, FL. and another is for 4/16 Birmingham, AL. I only want face total for either one or both shows. I will (gulp) swallow the TB charge :) Sunrise is $35 and Birmingham is $30. Total for both is $65. The Sunrise is NOT a tapers ticket, it's actually Sec M3A, left balcony 5th row. (Prob'ly a decent taper spot too - away from the floor. Sunrise is pretty small I hear). I would especially like the B'ham to go to a taper, since the show is G.A. - but won't be too picky. I will be patching in for Atlanta and probably Asheville. Maybe we can trade these later! Please reply to me privately. Serious inquiries only! Thanks for the "phill"-er. Brian

But I'll be coming up there because thats the weekend of my sisters birthday so I'll be going to visit her and when I went to get my ticket it was all sold out!
