I'm posting this for a taping buddy of mine - Rick "Ramblin Bear"
Hey All,
I've owned a pair of Nak 300s (w/card, omni, and shot caps) since the
good ol' days with the Dead. I've taped with 'em for almost 15 years
now, and I'm just plain tired of 'em. I'm looking for something to
update my sound...
I've decided that I would like to try a new mic / pre solution. I got a
GuitarCenter ad the other day (I know, bad for mom and pop shops, but
they do have GREAT prices...) and they are selling the Oktava MK012s for
$100 each, and the Oktava MK013 (large diaphragms) for $150 a pair. Any
comments about these two mics? Compare / contrast? I know they use the
same basic mic elements, and that the MK012 is more flexible with
removable caps, whereas the 013s have a larger diaphragm design. I see
that they use phantom power, and my DAT-heads digest searches have
suggested that they really want 48V. Any suggestions there would also be
welcome.
I'll still hold onto the Naks in any case (particularly for the shots!),
so I am really looking for the mic which will give me the smoothest
mid-highs. My Nak setup seems to lay down some strident highs (even with
the analog mixer, which really helps).
Thanks in advance for any opinions - I'll check the archive for a few
days, or feel free to comment directly to me at:

Hi, I have a sony D-8 for sale. It is appr. 2 years old. 75 hours total
use time, about 10 hours of those were record. The unit is in excellent
shape, it has a couple of *very* minor scratches on the surface which are
hardly noticable but I wanted to be completely honest about the unit. Unit
comes with ac adaptor and leather case. I will entertain all serious
offers. I will also consider a trade if you feel like you can make a good
offer.
thanks

I had $100 worth of batteries confiscated at the security check on my
outbound flight from Denver>Philadelphia back in February. I've flown about
10 times prior to this without incident. I just got reimbursed by my
airline, but I'd recommend carrying a printout of the rule/reg that Seth
pointed out. I have also come to learn that most manufacturers have
pre-written statements that you can get via fax or website regarding this
problem. The airport security and airline employees don't know about all
the exceptions, they only know the general rules. The burden is on you to
show the batteries are safe.

If anyone managed to get past the metal detectors at the
Hollywood Palladium this past Friday (4/6/01) and managed
to get a tape of the "Rock For Choice" 2001 Benefit, even
if incomplete, I'd love you forever if you could email me! :)
I have a private collection of my own DAT recordings
of Lilith-type artists that I've never distributed
(many of soundboard quality), but which I'd be willing to
share in this particular case, as long as you promise never
to auction them on eBay or turn them into commercial boots! :)
Thanks in advance,
Hopeful...

Hi All,
I wanted to share to following information with everyone here since some of
you may have seen or heard some erroneous information about the SONIC AD2K+.
As occassionally happens, someone posts misinformation about the AD2K+ and I
must clarify.
Hopefully the following alleviates any concerns about the use of the AD2K+
and recordings you may receive
that have been made using it.
SOMEONE wrote (on another mailing list):
>According to Benchmark any of the dither options on the chip that the AD2K,
>aside from TPDF, will cause distortion upon playback if you go above 107dB.
The AD2K+ spec. sheet, as confirmed by Audio Precision, the premier
manufacturer of high-end test equipment, indicates that there is .00033%
THD+N (total harmonic distortion + noise) at -107dbfs when measured at
recording levels of -1dbfs. These are EXTREMELY LOW figures that outperform
most products on the market. Any time audio is run through electronics,
there is some amount of distortion.
For example, the Lunatec V2, which designed with ultimate transparency in
mind, offers the following specs:
+20dBu out @20dB gain 0.0011%
+20dBu out @40dB gain 0.0011%
+20dBu out @60dB gain 0.0046%
This is over 100 times higher than than the AD2K+.
And another pre-amp manufacturer, that utilizes transformers, as compared to
the transformerless design of the V2, and obviously the AD2K+, shows .05%
maximum THD+N. Over 1000 times higher than the 2K+. While this pre-amp
spec. is not wonderful, it is certainly an acceptable measurement and in
keeping with the equipment that tapers and professional field recordists
use.
As we can easily see, the AD2K+ offers astonishing performance and
distortion is NOT a problem. All of the pre-amps that could be used in front
of it actually contain much more distortion than the converter itself--not
that we would ever be able to hear this EXTREMELY low level of distortion.
>I blew one of my woofers while listening to an FOB on my system made with
>one of the NS settings. Now I can't say if the event is a coincidence or
>not but it certainly made me scratch my chin. I can actually hear
distortion
>when Schools drops bombs but I don't know if that was happening at the show
>or not, it could simply be what was coming out of the stacks recorded
>accurately.
Most home stereo systems would create considerably more distortion than any
of the above equipment when played back at 107db. Keep in mind, most
concert levels are kept at 98-104db at front-of-house (ie. the soundboard
position).
While I see that you mention a tape made with a Benchmark NS setting, you
should be aware that the NN (Near Nyquist) word-length reduction settings
utilize the same spectral content (ie. noise) used by Apogee in UV22.
Benchmark's NS settings are only mild deviations from NN settings. More
information about word-length reduction is available at
http://www.sonicsense.com/wlrdoc.html
As we have never heard accounts of someone "blowing their speakers" with an
Apogee made tape, you should feel the same confidence when listening to
recordings made using an AD2K+.
==================
A few other issues:
Several folks have asked about TPDF
This process, which is used for word-length reduction (example: 24-bit to
16-bit) stands for Triangular Probability Distribution Function. It is the
placement of equal noise across all frequencies as opposed to NNtm, NStm,
SBMtm, or UV22tm. Each of these concentrate on placing the noise in areas
that are deemed to be less intrusive to the source material (audio) than
TPDF. Still, we do find that TPDF, for Rock'n'Roll recording can sound quite
nice. It just doesn't sound as true to the 24-bit source as some others do.
Regarding our recent post to Dat-heads, Kelly Kay k.kay@att.net wrote:
>Actually the best/most efficient way to determine which

Software is indeed a great way to conduct A/B comparisons. Thanks for the
great suggestion. I look forward to spending some time with this software.
In fact, we used the 24-bit computer recording made using Sound Forge 5.0
and set up a short loop like you suggest. Then, using this same loop over
and over, we evaluated the 16-bit output settings to determine what sonic
characteristics they impart on the source. As we all know, to reduce a
24-bit or 20-bit word length to 16-bit requires the introduction of noise.
While the manufacturers never want to call it coloration, it does indeed
affect the overall sound.
As we wanted to see how close a DAT, with its 16-bit limitation, could
possibly sound in comparison to our 24-bit computer-based recording made in
the field with the AD2K+, we utilized the Digital Through option on the
AD2K+ on our reference system..
As opposed to having to switch through all seven of the AD2K+ word-length
reduction (WLR) options for DAT compatability while making a recording, we
can now record in 24-bit and evaluate the WLR modes back in a controlled
environment.
Using the 24-bit recording made on the SONY Vaio laptop, we played digitally
into the AD2K+ and out to a Lucid DA9624 D/A converter. We then moved
through each 16-bit word-length reduction setting on the AD2K+. In 24-bit
mode, you get to hear exactly what the recording sounds like. Then, in
switching to any of the 16- or 20- word-length reduction types, you can
instantly hear how it sounds (and how it would be recorded to DAT) as
compared to the previous type or to the 24-bit source. It was through this
process that we determined that 16NN2 sounded the most similar to the 24-bit
source. Still these tests are inconclusive and individuals may prefer some
of the characteristics that the other settings deliver.
Please feel free to contact us with any AD2K+ related questions.

contraption, be sure to heckle Mike Remmers with millions of questions on

I was wondering what standard practice was for extracting and burning audio
files in machines with network cards....I shut down all applications and
usually (if I remember) disable the network card for extracting from cd or
dat, as well as burning. Is disabling the network card necessary? I use a
NetBEUI, a particularly noisey protocol, for redundancy, and had also
considered simply un-installing that.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Hi all,
I've had a look around the web, but I couldn't find anything useful about
which Marantz microphones are the best. So, if you have any recommendations
about which ones are worth getting, for a "stealth" recording situation, it
would be appreciated.

i had the pleasure of meeting someone who works for SD today, and found out 2
very interesting things....1. they are designing a new portable 4 ch. mixer
for field and broadcast use. this would come in handy for anyone running a
matrix at shows. and 2. if anyone has noticed a simularity between the mp2
and the new field mixer from shure, that's because SD is manufacturing them,
and putting the shure
name on them.....
