From: D Heatherly <dano272@yahoo.com> Subject: ISO: Live Aid Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 10:18:58 -0700 (PDT) I inquired about this show a few months ago, and I received a couple of responses. None ended up panning out. I have about 4 hours on cassette! and am looking to upgrade. If someone has the complete gig (both Philly and London), I would like to hear from you. From: Ron Dalton <RDalton@najarian.com> Subject: FS: B&K 4011's, Cables and Shockmounts Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 14:37:52 -0400 Dalton clearance sale! I'm on my way to stealthing down, so my 4011's are on the hit list. I'm pairing down to the 4022 (what? you thought I was getting away from the B&K's?? And buy what?? Schoeps?? Yeah.....NOT!) With that thought in mind, here is the deal. I'm selling the 4011's (orig. price $4500), plus the Audio Magic Sceptor II cables (orig. price $150) and the AT8410 shockmounts (orig. price $100) all for $3700 firm. I'm losing almost $1000 in a little over 2 yrs. All of this equipment was bought new from Sonic Sense (11/98) and I have reciepts to verify. Alot of you know the sound that these incredible mics produce and I hate to part w/ them, but..... Either way, thats the offer - hit me when your ready! BTW - the 4011's are a FACTORY MATCHED PAIR, they cost me more, but they are totally the same mic. Thanks All. Ron Dalton

When burning onto CD, be sure to use disc-at-once if you do not want to have 2 seconds of silence between tracks. ================ Warren Melnick Director of Research and Development Astata Corporation =====Original Message===== From: David Minches [mailto:dminches@snip.net] Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2001 2:33 PM To: dat-heads@datheads.phish.net Subject: DAT to CD (via computer) Question If I have recorded a segment onto my hard drive from DAT, am I simply cutting and pasting segments (using Cool Edit or SoundForge) that will each be tracks for my CD? I find it more efficient to keep the whole .wav intact, using CDWAV to set track breaks and create a CDRWIN cue sheet, then burn the disc with CDRWIN. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com

It is in very good cosmetic shape and 100% functional $290 and shipping Sony PCM-2000 an older pro model "portable" DAT deck--portable in this case means it runs off of a rechargable video battery, but it ain't a walkman--it weighs a solid 9 pounds it is built like a brick sh#thouse with separate motors for play/record, tape loading and rapid tape transport--REALLY high $$ construction--NEVER ate a tape while I had it (unlike the Sony DAT Walkman I got rid of) for production work, it does time code (LTC) in and out--also word sync in records at 44.056, 44.1, 48 from analog, also 32 digitally. AES/EBU digital, balanced analog mic inputs w/phantom power (nice) retailed for about $6000 %^)) (according to the DAT Heads equipment FAQ) new way back when--I bought it from an audiophile who was using it with a separate D/A convertor and for dubbing works great--heads in good shape--has one little quirk in that if you have the unit vertical or after you move it, one of the tape capstans on a swing arm dosen't always return (small spring retension ?) and then when you try to advance tape, nothing happens . . . dosen't mess anything up--you just pull tape, swing it over with little finger or tilt the deck and then it works fine until you jerk the unit againincludes heavy duty Sony production-video outboard power supply, operations manual and repair manual $ 470 and shipping _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
From: Mike Parker <parker@aracnet.com> Subject: The ol` tape stuck in the deck problem Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 17:59:28 -0700 Hi all, Well this is the first time i`ve had a tape stuck in my trusty Fostex D5 in the 5 years that i`ve had it. I put in a fresh Maxell DDS tape, hit FF to unpack the tape, it spun till 07:00 on the meter & then stopped dead. Won`t eject, won`t do anything. It does flash OPEN about 10 times, then the display stays steady as OPEN. Any recommendations? I`ve just had it serviced about a month ago. i suspect the tape broke, but i am afraid to poke around too much inside the machine. Don`t want to mess up the delicate transport system. I wanted to hear from a few other datheads before i send it off to Pro Digital. thanks very much, Mike Parker parker@aracnet.com
From: WAREAGLEBART@aol.com Subject: Dat help Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 21:52:17 EDT I recorded leftover salmon monday night and i've never had a worse night taping. THe guy i was plugged into the sbd and i asked him if he had given anything alisten and he said it sounded fine when the house music was goin. Well, his batteries died before the first set was over and it sounds like nothing else i've recorded. It sounds real great for a couple minutes and instruments get louder and voices fade and all kind of stuff. Well , i'm not into the whole editing thing but i know i've had some shitty shows folks have done wonders for and i'll be happy to send whoever feels they can fix this show from 4 9 01 state college pa at the crowbar holler at me and i'll mail em out to ya, all i'd ask is for a copy back. Thanks in advance for the help.
From: "Bryce" <spaceism@sympatico.ca> Subject: SONY CDRW33 and SPDIF Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 22:23:09 -0400 I cannot copy from my TASCAM DA-40 into the CDRW33 as it says "Cannot Copy" on display. And in back of manual it says "Not consumer Digital Format". Why on earth does sony list this on their site as a Pro recorder when it can't even record SPDIF. I have never in my life seen something like this.

From: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Subject: Sound Devices and Shure (MP-2/FP24) Reply-To: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 09:26:01 -0600 Hi All, Cjyellow@aol.com wrote: >had the pleasure of meeting someone who works for SD today, and found out 2 >very interesting things....1. they are designing a new portable 4 ch. mixer >for field and broadcast use. this would come in handy for anyone running a >matrix at shows. and 2. if anyone has noticed a simularity between the mp2 >and the new field mixer from shure, that's because SD is manufacturing them, >and putting the shure name on them..... Having helped design the MP-2 with the folks at Sound Devices, I wanted to clarify a few important points about the Sound Devices/Shure connection. When we started the MP-2 project, Sound Devices only had a single unit in production--The MP-1, a single channel pre-amp with stepped gain and no level meters. I tested a pair of these against a Lunatec V2, as a reference, along with a Schoeps CMXY-4V. While the MP-1's (and now 2's) are not as revealing of depth and detail as the V2, they maintain a tight, clear definition in the bottom-end and a forward mid-high that gives presence and clarity that nicely complemented the test recordings and many we have made since then (now utilizing the MP-2). As we liked the sound of the original units, I worked closely with Sound Devices to assure that we, as tapers, got a design and feature set that would benefit us considerably in both regular recording and low-profile endeavors ; ). Yeah, those lights are painfully bright, but at least they gave me the off position I requested. Then, with that design in place, Sound Devices tailored the MP-2 into another product called the MixPre for the film and ENG industry. While they look quite similar, be aware of the following: A MixPre is NOT an MP-2 in disguise. The MixPre has a 14db lower clipping point on the input than the MP-2 does. It is NOT designed for recording high-volume Rock and Roll. It will distort when fed with hot output microphones under high SPL situations. The MixPre has two stages of switching. As tapers, most of us do not need panning capability which requires a switch. We agreed that this could be left off the MP-2 for an overall cleaner circuit (ie. improved sound quality of the MP-2) The MixPre has features that tapers do not need; while the slate, internal test tone generator, and panning capability are great for film and ENG folks, they do nothing for us (sort of like those painfully bright lights (Sorry, Jim : ) ) On a final note, the Shure FP24 IS the MixPre with the Shure name on it. I have heard reports of some dealers promoting the FP24 as a less expensive alternate to the MP-2. If they are doing so, they are indicating their lack of experience with these items and they not promoting what is in the best interest of a concert taper. List price is the same on these. I hope this information helps everyone. Happy Recording, Marc Marc Nutter Mike Remmers Sonic Sense, Inc. 2755 S. Gilpin St. Denver, CO 80210 Toll Free Phone (877) 324-4463 http://www.sonicsense.com
