From: "michael" <popskull@pipeline.com> Subject: 8 tracks........ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 23:17:28 -0400 I have quite a few Panisonic 8 track players and boom boxes ......besides the imfamous Dyno-mite player, I do have a nice portable with mic/line inputs and adjustable record levels I have found a few live FM recordings in my thrift shop 8 track quests, but no concert recordings I would think the main reason 8 track cartridge recording was not popular amoung concert tapers of the 70's was the size of the 8track recorders vs cassette machines of the time. If I was going to smuggle in boom box size gear, it would be a nak 550! There is also the issue of 22.5 minute max between the track changes. To this day, when I hear certian Hendrix material that I recorded from album to 8 track, I can still hear that "CLICK" ripping in the middle of the song, even though Im listening to a cd! For nostalgia purposes though, 8 tracks rule! cheers! michael

Does the Sony M-1 And RMD-3K even work together??? I've just had an M-1 in my possession and it seem's louder in volume when it's loading the tape up and engaging it to the head then the D-7 that I own. I'm looking at purchasing an M-1, there smaller and more stealth worthy, but have no experience with them compared to D-7. Any suggestions?? ------------------------------ >> RM-D3K works fine only with ONLY digital input to the M1, output specifications are different and this interface will not work reliably for digital output (just what you really needed it for likely). The RM-D100K is the new interface for D100/M1 Decks and is backward compatible with earlier Sony models. M1 lasts much longer than D8 models due to a new transport that sounds and acts identical to the venerable DENON DTR-80P Casio made DAT deck which had very long lasting heads and a very slow loading/noisy sounding transport that virtually never failed to load tapes properly. 7 page deck Review of the D100/M1 DATs at: <A HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/d100rev.htm"> http://www.sonicstudios.com/d100rev.htm</A> Regards in Sound & Music Recording, Leonard Lombardo ======================================== Sonic Studios(tm)..."Making Audio History With DSM(tm) Microphones" "Sonic Studios Stealth Microphones(tm)" 541-459-8839 /\ FAX: 541-459-8842 /\ USA Free: 1-888-875-4976 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Informative WEB SITE: http://<A HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com"> www.sonicstudios.com</A> A better wish... Paul, looks like you may be in luck...get in touch with Doug Oade (http://www.oade.com/), as he has been developing just the mod you may be looking for! Some of us have been field testing prototypes, and the results have been very, very encouraging, to say the least... :) Doug will be happy to fill you in the technical details, but his mod basically involves upgrading the SBM-1 to a *24-bit A/D* 24-bit digital filter & other goodies...the 16-bit output no longer has SBM noise shaping, but TPDF dither instead, which actually works very well in high SPL situations, such as audience mic'ing of PA systems... Let's just say that in most areas, you may be surprised at sonic results competitive with the Apogee AD1000/AD500e and the AD2K, at a fraction of their cost, size and complexity. :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? They can be used at a 90-degree angle with 8-12 inches between capsules, as all microphones are directional in the upper frequencies. Of course, they can also be spaced on-axis in the traditional omni A-B method Included are both near and diffuse field grids and stand adapters. These are the P48 phantom version. I won't reveal the reserve, but you will save a CONSIDERABLE amount of money compared to other options. Only used for location classical, and are in superb condition. Please note that this is a pair of mics. Email privately with questions.

He puts in a tape, which the machine recognizes as evidenced by the time code, presses play - the transport seems to move properly - but there are no subsequent levels or playback. This happens with all tapes. Any thoughts on what the problem might be, or on possible solutions, would be greatly appreciated. Please address responses to: ephish@yahoo.com Thanks much. Bandwidth tax: I'm going to the Disco Biscuits tonight in Northampton, MA. Barring some unforseen problem, I will be taping the show. First response I receive timed AFTER midnight can B&P at noray@advinc.com Thanks.

From: Louie Rendek <ljr7@po.cwru.edu> Subject: Python DAT > computer DAT2WAV question.. Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 10:18:03 -0400 hello gang, since this seems to be a popular topic these days, i thought i would get in here with my question too. i have the SGI/Seagate Python audio capable DAT in a computer and use the DAT2WAV software. the error that i get once in awhile occurs when the the software seems to keep reading all the way to the end of the DAT (for a 90m, it runs to 3:06:00). when it does this, the software gives an ASPI audio read error and the .wav file that is saved to the drive is unusable. it doesn't seem to depend on sample rate (i have had it work for DATs that were either 48k or 44k). i have not tried this on any 60m tapes (don't have that many DATs around with shows on them, only 90m tapes). the only clue that i have as to the problem is that the only time i get a .wav file that is usable is when the software stops reading at 2:55 or earlier (i.e. not going to the end of the tape). any clues? thanks, louie rendek seekup.cwru.edu

"sorry, but this doesn't sound like good advice to me. if you don't want to create backup data discs (why?!?!?!) or mp3 and never want to trade the music, well ok." ============================== Huh??? CDWAV's got nothing to do with data files and everything to do with efficiency! I used to copy/paste to new tracks with Soundforge and it was sooo tedious and time consuming. I never did figure out how to eliminate those slight (random) pops between tracks and gave up when I discovered CDWAV from the etree-org.com site, as they approve/endorse using it. I still use Soundforge to record DAT>PC but can slice & dics tracks of complete shows with less effort and time with this effective tool. As long as you are within the rated speed of the media there is no evidence to support problems with discs just because they were burned at a higher rate.
