At the price listed at the above URL, you would be better
off buying the Etymotic ER4P ear phones. Much better noise
suppression and the tiny plugs are very easy to pack.

FYI, I think the Etymotic is a good product. A fair
number of people recommend just getting the ER4S even
with a low-gain source. I would defer, though, to
someone who has actually compared the ER4S and ER4P.
Also there are a couple of DAT-heads friendly Pro Audio
vendors who are Etymotic dealers. I believe Klay
(www.klay.com) and also Wind over the Earth (www.windovertheearth.com).
With both you will get full
Pro Audio service, support some good folks, and get
a good price too.
Also I believe Jeff Silberman used to sell Etymotic
earplugs and possibly the headphones, but I haven't been
able to find a current email address for him.

I've read that article and I understand it. It only addresses error rates at
various speeds; it doesn't cover what I'm talking about. I've known for a
while now that people are able to burn CDs at high speeds with no significant
increase in error rates. It is apparent that extraction is more important to
producing accurate copies than the burning process is.
However, the article above doesn't address any possible issues regarding
reflective properties, compatibility, longevity or reliability of discs
burned at high speeds.
Case in point: I read that article, and like you, I didn't think there was
any difference burning discs at high speeds as long as proper extraction was
done first. I just upgraded my old 2x (write) Philips CDD3610 to a newer 8x
(write) Philips CDD4801. I burned about 15 copies of some discs, on Mitsui
media, at 8x and some at 4x. I have no idea how I missed this the first
time, but all the ones I burned at 8x took FOREVER to spin up, skip tracks,
FF, etc. on my portable CD player. I tried playing them on some other
players in my house. I believe only two out of four or five read them
correctly. So, all of the discs I burned at 8x found their way to my garbage
can, as they weren't tradable. All the ones I burned at 4x or lower did not
have this problem at all.
Conclusion: burning at high speeds may actually alter properties of the disc
not related to error rates, making them difficult to read on many players.
Although this may be some kind of problem with the particular make and/or
model of my CD-RW drive, it wouldn't surprise me if the same thing is
happening with other drives. While I don't believe that the process of high
speed burning is inherently flawed, I do believe that the technology is not
being implemented correctly with certain drives.
This is why I tell you to be careful burning at high speeds. You may need to
check to see if discs play properly on several of your own CD players before
sending them to other people.

Subject: 8 tracks...the way it was
Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 17:57:31 -0400
The old 8 track recorders were not only large and cumbersome,
they usually required several C or D size batteries. This made
taping at a show quite the major project. I used to record shows
that were broadcast on the radio using the 8 tracks, as that was
much easier.
To my recollection the tapes were generally 2 lengths that were
commercially available to the public...a 40 (or 45) minute length,
which was nice for dubbing LPs (record albums, for you younger
folks), and 80 minute tapes (for those double albums).
8 tracks really referred to the 4 tracks of music, each having a left
and right channel, resulting in the 8 track total. On those 80 minute
tapes each channel would be 20 minutes and then there would be
that nasty 'click' during the track change. If the track change was
during a song there would be a 2 second gap in the music. The
'click' was actually heard (sometimes loudly) as the deck would
change tracks.
Since each of the 4 tracks lay parallel, as you were listening to one
of the tracks, the sound from a different track could often be heard
somewhat faintly in the background. Since a couple of inches of the
tape shell would protrude out of the deck, it was often necessary to
wedge a matchbook between the shell and the deck to help align the
tape with the heads to avoid that bleeding through of sound from a
different track. This was true more so when playing a tape recorded
on a different deck, and especially true when listening in a car.
The digital world can be wacky at times (diginoise, etc.), but it is so
much better in so many ways.

Hey everyone:
A friend of mine is selling his Tascam DA-302 dual DAT deck. I personally
would love to take it off his hands, but I don't have the cash. Anyway, he
asked me to post it here, so that's what I'm doing.
BTW, for what it's worth, he's a pretty trustworthy guy and I know that the
deck has seen very minor use (he hasn't had it very long). For any further
questions, e-mail him (his e-mail address is below).
Scott
Here is the info that I'd like for you to pass on to the DAT Heads list.
I figure going through you might be better than me just posting since
you're more familiar with the people on it.
So send that on when you can!
Thanks,
Bogie

Hey Adam
Thanks for the feedback. To clarify... I used to use alkaline 9v. Even
though there is life left in the battery after a show, I start the next show
with a fresh one having learned the hard way not to push a battery to the
limit and risk crapping out before a break. I hated the waste though. So I
went to rechargable NiMh from Radio Shack. I knew that rechargables dont
last as long as alkalines, but I didnt think they would last only 2hr 45
min!! I dont know if all Ni-Mh are all that bad or if Radio Shack just
sucks. So this is why I was looking for a different rechargable option with
more capacity.
I got several emails from people wanting me to forward them a solution if
one was sent to me. Heres a copy of a suggestion I received.
========
I built a battery pack using a 6v SLA batt. If you use the power jack in you
can run the inbox on 6-24v. I used a 7.5 amp hour because I had one already.
this will power it for weeks. You could use a smaller battery if size and
weight are a concern.

Looking for any recent John Frusciante shows. No MP3 stuff. I have his new

They were directed and filmed by Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66 fame). This is
super rare since it only aired on MTV2 once in it's entirety. I have the
master off of Digital Cable. I'll trade these for any sweet audio from the
recent "mini" tour that John did. Thanks!!!

Ok, first I think I am alone in the world as a Bon Jovi taper. I know
many traders who are happy to pass on 42nd generation barely
audible test patterns, but I know there have to be other DAT tapers
out there somewhere. I have 14 masters from last years Crush tour
as well as tons of masters from past band and solo tours. I will be
taping 15 Us shows in May and July and am looking for trading
partners in the Western 1/2 of the US , the UK, Japan and
Australia. After hearing one of my recordings Jon commented
"that's the way a bootleg is supposed to sound", well they aren't
supposed to be bootlegs but it was a nice compliment anyway, so
I guarantee I have fun stuff to trade for if you have any Jovi at all.
On to the free DATs..
all of the following came to me in trades and I never listened to em,
I don't want anything for them at all, if you like em, just reimburse
my postage someday.
DATs
Def Leppard 9/14/00
NIN 5/17/00
Dream Theater 8/14/00
Queensryche 11/13/99
CSNY 2/23/00
Frog Brigade 8/19/00
Roger Waters 7/3/00
Prince 1/13/96
I also have 7 VHS Tapes direct from Satellite of Jewel, Sheryl
Crow, Sarah McGlaughlin, etc. that I taped a few years back and
don't want anymore so a good home for those would be
appreciated as well, again free to anyone who wants them.
