Why is this a problem using a single CD-length wav file and a CDRWIN cue list? Just compress the wav with Shorten and burn it to a data CD along with the cue list if you want to create a backup. How does splitting it up into a bunch of little files help? > but the way of the world is fast fun and quick and dirty work. who cares > about the bits that may fall over the years, unnoticed and unrecoverable. But this has nothing to do with how best to transfer a DAT to audio CD. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com
From: E T <tour_soundguy@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: Easy CD help, please Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 13:51:09 -0700 (PDT) David <MadManMead@aol.com> had posted: >Conclusion: burning at high speeds may actually alter >properties of the disc not related to error rates, >making them difficult to read on many players. I've been relatively lucky in that cd-rs duped at full speed (16x) from my Plextor 40x Max SCSI reader to my Plextor 16x IDE writer, with "Burn-proof" enabled, can be read without any problems on my Sony Discman, Alpine Car CD head unit, and my Meridian CD deck in my home system... If I do get read the very occasional errors or lag, it seems to be more due to the type of media used and the machine this is played on, rather than the speed with which the cd-r was burnt. Of course, I may be proven wrong when upgrading to that 24x burner... :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Re: Etymotics ER-4P Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 15:33:17 -0700 Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to test this model. The good folks at Etymotic were kind enough to send me a set of ER-4S's, but they decided one test set per writer was enough! To the best of my understanding, you should be able to get much louder sound with the new (ER-4P) model, when driving from a "crappy" headphone output, such as D8/D100/M1/any CD discman etc., with no otherwise change in quality. (The ER-4P has a lower impedance than ER-4S so it's better suited to "low voltage/higher current" outputs). While these "hearplugs" are enough by themselves for airplane listening and for just checking to see if your tape is recording, if you really want to MIX in a live venue while monitoring with ER-4P/S phones, you also need over-the-ear hearing protectors like hunters and helicopter people use. I use a model called Thunder 29 by Howard Light Industrys, available at gun shops for under $30. (You could also use these with cheaper in-the-ear 'phones). This model folds up so it fits somewhat better in your equipment bag. I used this combination just last night to record Nels Cline's new band, "The Nels Cline Singers". Very nice SSSS tape if anyone would like to catch up on Nels' latest project. (P.s. there are no singers in the Nels Cline Singers, it's a joke). --Gary

From: "Jamie McCormick" <james.mccormick@yale.edu> Subject: help for a taping newbie at phil & friends Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 19:50:34 -0400 Hi everyone, I've been trading for a while now, but thought I'd try my hand at taping on the upcoming phil & friends tour. I'm borrowing a D7 to bring to the philly and asbury park shows, and was wondering if someone who's going to be there could lend a hand. First of all, I guess I'll need to patch into a chain off someone's mics. But also, I'd be much abliged if someone would take the time just to sort of show me the ropes of live taping. Anyway, just thought I'd try to set something up beforehand instead of grovelling inside the theaters. Thanks, and see ya on tour, jamie BWT: GD 7/21/74 Aud, 3 discs.
From: "datman" <datman@midsouth.rr.com> Subject: DAT DRIVE FOR SALE $195 Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 19:56:17 -0500 SEAGATE DAT DRIVE WITH AUDIO SUPPORT Model # CTD4004R-S 3.5" form factor drive with rails and 5.25" bezel This Peregrine series DAT drive has 2GB native capacity with 90m tapes and 4GB hardware compressed capacity. The drive supports both data and DAT audio mode and can read/write audio with special software for the PC. SCSI inquiry string reports "ARCHIVE Python 01931-XXX 5AC". This drive is used but has been tested and is in working condition. The drive will extract audio at approximately double speed (~2.2x). It will support SCSI-2, single-ended, async/sync transmission. The SCSI connector is the narrow, 50-pin internal type. Windows 98/2000 will work with the appropriate SCSI card and drivers. I know of Vdat and Dat2Wav software for Windows, but there may be others that will read in audio mode. These programs require ASPI drivers that are usually supplied by the SCSI card manufacturer. No international shipments. Fixed insured shipping costs of $10 for UPS ground or equivalent. BidPay accepted for credit card transactions. USPS Money Order/Cashier's checks also accepted. E-mail datman@midsouth.rr.com with any questions. Thanks for your interest.

From: CatalystX <catalystx@home.com> Subject: ATTN: All TOOL Tapers/Filmers 2.0 Reply-To: catalystx@home.com Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 20:04:31 -0700 I'm sending this email again with some changes I've made to address issues brought up in some of the first emails I've received so far: Ever since the demise of the Tool Marketplace(http://home.earthlink.net/~fretdance/) and the Tool Trading Ring, there's been no Tool trading community. I guess it didn't really exist in the first place... I'd like to build one, and would really appreciate any help I can get. I've started by creating a web page to help Tool tapers/filmers easily find and contact each other for obtaining 1st generation, quality recordings of the 2001 tour. Please check it out at http://members.home.net/catalystx/tool2001.html and let me know if you would like to participate. If you are concerned about having your email/web page address on the page, there are other options available. You can post just your name or nickname and I will then act as a filter by having anyone who wants to contact you email me, then forward their message to you. However, it would be nice to avoid the hassle altogether and let people freely contact each other. The address to this page most likely won't get spread around very far, about as much as your trading web page, so you shouldn't get bugged by too many unwanted emails. For the record, Tool does not have an open taping policy, so you will have to stealth your equipment into their shows. Tool has never actually stated their policy on taping/filming for the purpose of trading though, only on bootlegs. I can't find the quote, but I remember reading one in which they stated that people should either steal bootlegs or tape their own, just as long as they're not paying for or selling them. I DO NOT sell my recordings, and I wouldn't want anyone that does on this list. That's what Tool and other bands detest, as it allows people to make a profit from them without their permission. I doubt freely trading shows for the appreciation of their music is a big worry for them, as long as everyone doing it buys their CDs and pays to see them in concert. Thanks Aaron P.S. I'm in the middle of moving to a new house, so I may not be able to keep on top of my email if I start getting a ton of responses. I'll try my best to replay ASAP though, and I should be settled into the new place soon.
