Gary comments:
>To the best of my understanding, you should be able to get much
louder sound with the new (ER-4P) model, when driving from a
"crappy" headphone output, such as D8/D100/M1/any CD discman
etc., with no otherwise change in quality. (The ER-4P has a lower
impedance than ER-4S so it's better suited to "low voltage/higher
current" outputs).<
The ER4 "P" is less equalized then the "S" model. Thus the lower
impedance. Its frequency response is tilted towards the bass so it is
more bassy, dark sounding then the ER4S. The S is flat the P isn't. The
eq circuit is inside the little pod that clips to your shirt.
Gary comments:
>if you really want to MIX in a live venue while monitoring with
ER-4P/S phones, you also need over-the-ear hearing protectors
like hunters and helicopter people use.<
The isolation with custom molds made by an audiologist is superb. You
hardly need additional over the ear protectors if you have custom molds
made. Also a lot more comfortable a more convenient not to mention better
sound.

Subject: DAT DRIVE W/AUDIO FOR SALE $195

SEAGATE DAT DRIVE WITH AUDIO SUPPORT
Model # CTD4004R-S 3.5" form factor drive with rails and 5.25" bezel
This Peregrine series DAT drive has 2GB native capacity with 90m tapes and
4GB hardware compressed capacity. The drive supports both data and DAT
audio mode and can read/write audio with special software for the PC. SCSI
inquiry string reports "ARCHIVE Python 01931-XXX 5AC". This drive is used
but has been tested and is in working condition. The drive will extract
audio at approximately double speed (~2.2x). It will support SCSI-2,
single-ended, async/sync transmission. The SCSI connector is the narrow,
50-pin internal type. Windows 98/2000 will work with the appropriate SCSI
card and drivers. I know of Vdat and Dat2Wav software for Windows, but
there may be others that will read in audio mode. These programs require
ASPI drivers that are usually supplied by the SCSI card manufacturer.
No international shipments. Fixed insured shipping costs of $10 for UPS
ground or equivalent. BidPay accepted for credit card transactions. USPS
Money Order/Cashier's checks also accepted. E-mail datman@midsouth.rr.com
with any questions. Thanks for your interest.

If you hear a buzz from the light in a D8/D7 etc, this usually
indicated a grounding problem on one of your connections - ie, a
"loose wire".

Walter Knapp used to hang out here and handle these - he
records frogs, birds and bugs and things. He now posts
a lot at the Usenet minidisc group (alt.audio.minidisc)
and loves the HHb minidisc unit. I suggest checking
there and getting his email address.

Subject: Repairing a cable

I have a nice XLR to rca cable (actually 2 cables - 1 for each
line L/R). Unfortunately, the left (blue) side seems to have a short in
it. Just by jiggling the cable I can experience a big drop in volume on
that channel. The end connectors are nice and screw-off to allow easy
access to the wiring. This is the heart of taping season for me so I would
like to get this fixed asap. Where can I send it to ensure a professional
job? (I asked this question a few months ago but lost all the responses to
a laptop/apple juice interaction - good for humans/ bad for computerz).
Also, if anyone is trying to sell a professional XLR (female) to
rca (male) cable, please contact me. I could use a spare.
Take Care,
Delano

Subject: Digital recording device

Hi, I'm thinking of getting myself a good recording rig...
i tried to find some info on mics, but there's sooo much to consider... i
think i'll go for Core Sound Binaurals: not too expensive and good for as
far as i can judge... is this a good choice?
then the recording device... I KNOW this list is called DAT-heads, but i
don't think i wanna get a DAT recorder. DAT sound quality *is* great, but i
think the system is a bit outdated, and to buy a new DAT-recorder for $800
[Sony TCD-D100] in the year 2001 seems a bit stupid to me. I've optioned
for the Nomad Jukebox, but then i only heard bad experiences about it for
long recordings... the batteries are not too reliable and there's no level
control.
does anyone has positive experiences with this?
MD is no option for me because of the sound quality... not that i can hear,
but i don't wanna compress the sound... [you guys should know what i mean]
does anyone know of any alternatives to the NJB? I just need a recording
device capable of recording 1-2 hours of music in preferably 48kHz. [44,1
would be good too i guess]
well, that's it for the moment!
cheers,
andr01d
