Most camcorders do not have a low sensitivity setting for their mic pre-amps and will overload into distortion when fed a hot signal. If the mics are self-powered, we strongly recommend using an attenuator cable between the mics and the mic input. You are warned if you have a motherboard based on the VIA chipset! Now, which of these audio cards are fully compatible with that motherboard chipset, for AMD Athlon? egosys waveterminal midiman delta dio 2496 rme digi96 I think all these have optical tos-link in/out connection. The dat-heads faq doesn't talk about tos-link, which I thought was how the optical connection was called, but I've seen the term s/pdif used for optical connection at Terratec site and in the Midiman manuals. From: jay <jay@3rdperson.com> Subject: schoeps VMS 5 U Reply-To: jay@3rdperson.com Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 11:59:38 -0700 Does anyone have any thoughts/ experience on the Schoeps VMS 5U with the KCY active cable and some capsules? Although I'm sure the pre-amp isn't lunatec quality, do people feel it's as good/ better than the sonosax? Or atleast feel that it's a decent pre-amp. Anyone have any experience using the m/s matrix? It seems like a cost effective way to start off with a decent rig, with the versatility of buying just capsules to go omni, or omni + fig. 8 m/s would be cool and relatively inexpensive....comparatively. all thoughts appreciated. From: "Brian - Network Administrator" <brian@hypowerinc.com> Subject: FS: Sony 7-pin connector... Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 15:39:11 -0400 I've got a cable that I've already replaced so I don't need this faulty one anymore... Currently it's a 7-pin (D8 is what I have) to Digi-Coax I/O. Something is wrong with the in feed, but it's within the cable, not the connector (I believe because it spits out digi-noise if the "In" cable is tweaked in anyway). I know to make one, you have to buy the cable from Sony and cut the 7-pin connector off. So, I offer up this "bad" cable for use of the 7-pin connector ONLY. $10 + $3.50 S/H and it's yours. Because I don't know jack $hit about the inner workings of these cables, if it turns out to be the connector, I'll take it back and refund the amount paid. Since I'm a digester and seem to "miss out" on bunch-o-offers because of it, I'm going to only entertain offers received AFTER the digest this post appears in my inbox. Special treatment to those who include the digest header in their response. Regards, B(c) ============================================== "I like fashion - and Porsches - and Rolexes - all that stuff! From: GuySonic@aol.com Subject: Re: : DPA 4051 vs 4060 (Digest #855) Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 16:25:03 EDT In a message dated 4/17/01 5:06:57 AM Pacific Daylight Time, DAT-heads-Request@datheads.phish.net writes: << ----------------------------- From: Andrew Nemeth <azn@nemeng.com> Subject: DPA 4051 vs 4060 Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 05:59:27 +1000 I have been using the miniature DPA 4060 mics for ambient location sound recording for 4 months now. Although they sound very good 90% of the time, they still have a bit too much self-noise for the really quiet stuff. So I am thinking of getting the larger diaphram, quieter spec DPA 4051. As I don't do rock'n'roll, high SPL issues aren't a consideration here. Anyone else use these? Opinions / gotchas? Too sensitive for general use? Too delicate for the rough-and-tumble of location work? Regds, Andrew Nemeth <http://4020.net> -> photos, 360=B0 panoramic vrs, sounds <http://nemeng.com> -> vr java applets, leica faq, tech info >> I've also found these types of mics a bit too noisy for recording very quiet nature sounds. Going to a larger diaphragm microphone WILL give you the lower mic self-noise and give a higher output to not challenge the mic preamplifier to be ultra quiet, but also add tonal coloration, and also these larger mic capsules will not have the higher frequency resolution and low coloration possible with using the smallest condenser capsules. So this is a compromise situation where lowest noise IS from larger mics, but you cannot get the needed sonic details with such mics. Sonic Studios has specialized DSM-1S series of surround-sound stereo microphone that cannot be used for recording anything much over 105 dB SPL (read not for recording PA'd anything), but has much better signal to noise performance or lower noise (like 6-8 dB lower self-noise) than DPA's best 4060 and is also much lower noise than all other types of small size condenser that can offer the high-frequency resolution needed to capture the entire 10-25,000 cycle bandwidth typical of wildlife sounds in natural ambient. In addition, the WHB windscreen headband accessory that's integrates with these mics allows full ability to produce very useful recordings in winds up to 40 MPH! This mic system is being used to record ambient sounds happening miles away with very little electrical background noise from the mic-deck electronics. Very well worth considering; guaranteed to meet your requirements with risk free 60 day trial period. Many satisfied DSM-1S users, I've not gotten any of these back from any disappointed customers so far. From: gruvenon@netzero.net Subject: Re: inbox power supply Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 16:43:01 -0400 From: "winnie" <who@sover.net> Subject: Re: inbox power supply Date: Sun, 10 Feb 1980 18:31:18 -0500 Hey Adam Thanks for the feedback. To clarify... I used to use alkaline 9v. Even though there is life left in the battery after a show, I start the next show with a fresh one having learned the hard way not to push a battery to the limit and risk crapping out before a break. I hated the waste though. So I went to rechargable NiMh from Radio Shack. I knew that rechargables don’t last as long as alkalines, but I didnt think they would last only 2hr 45 min!! I dont know if all Ni-Mh are all that bad or if Radio Shack just sucks. So this is why I was looking for a different rechargable option with more capacity. I got several emails from people wanting me to forward them a solution if one was sent to me. Heres a copy of a suggestion I received. ======== I built a battery pack using a 6v SLA batt. If you use the power jack in you can run the inbox on 6-24v. I used a 7.5 amp hour because I had one already. this will power it for weeks. You could use a smaller battery if size and weight are a concern. ======== Winnie, Adam, et al, I like Radio Shack Rechargeable Radio Controlled Car/Boat/Other Toy batteries. I have two the 9.6 Volt batteries. One is 600 mAh and one is 900. I also have the Radio Shack quick charger (mine is AC only, but some work off car batteries, a nice feature for tour heads). These batteries will power a Inbox for well over 8 hours. I left one hooked up over night and the low power light still wasn't on in the morning. My batteries are NiCd, but most of the newer radio shack RC batteries are NiMH. They charge fast, are reasonably priced and if you need a replacement they can be bought in just about any city in America. No mail order, no connectorizing, just plug and go. I did have to make a cable with a female molex connector on one end and a 1/8" mini plug on the other. If you put two molex females on the same end in parallel you could have a hot-swappable battery setup for even longer record times. Just make sure to disconnect the first battery right after you hook in the new one. I have tried the 'regular' 9V Radio Shack NiMH batteries in my Denecke PS-1 power supplies. They last much longer than a show, but I haven't tried one in my Inbox. I am surprised to hear they last such a short time. My NiMH 9v says 14-18 hours to charge them. When I read the voltage (no load) of a freshly charged RS NiMH battery I get over 9.5 volts. When I do the same with the Eveready 9v NiMH's I have they read 8.5 volts. I think the Radio Shack NiMH's are actually NOT 8.4 volts, as some other batteries (Eveready) are. Alan PS the 7.2 volt Radio Shack batteries (3000 mAh) should be good for this purpose as well. I originally bought the 9V batteries for another purpose, so I already had them on hand.
