I have a merlefest patron pass and taper ticket and I wont be going to
the show. Those of you who have been before, know all of the benefits
of the patron pass, and why it costs so much. If there's any interest
or questions, please respond to me OFF LIST with a subject line of
"merlefest" without the quotes.
thanks

On May 25. 1996 (30 years to the day of Dylan's infamous Manchester Free
Trade Hall gig), Robin Hitchcock and friends performed Dylan's 5/25/66
concert verbatim, at the Borderlin in London. I'm hoping one of you
collectors could possibly do me a small favor and provide just the
introduction and first song of that evening (She Belongs To Me). That's all
I need. Approx 6 or 7 minutes max. If someone could pop that short sequence
on a CDR for me, I'd be very appreciative. I'll certainly provide B&P and
thanks in advance to anyone nice enough to respond! Alan

Guy,
I think we are talking about two different rechargeable units. The
power pack I saw on the web does not hold cables nor does it have
cigarette sockets and it measures less than 5" by 2". I do not know
the weight of the Ni-MH power pack but it seems like it would be less
than 7 lbs.
Thomas
>>
Thomas,
They are indeed similar in some aspects, but NOT the same. Sorry that I
didn't make this most clear.
Being SIMILAR, BUT somewhat different portable power solutions, they cost
exactly the same, and both are available from Radio Shack. The one you have
is NiMH type, the one I referred to is a Lead/Acid 12 volt 7.5 AMP with over
twice the capacity, but this one is also quite a bit heavier/larger than your
NiMH version.
Both have many useful low voltage taps. The one I have is very different in
that it can be recharged very quickly by plugging into any automobile 12 volt
system using the supplied 12 volt to Cig lighter patch cord. This is very
cool and not possible with the NiMH system.
Both will run the D100/M1 decks, but I suggest using the 6 volt supply tap
(yes this is safe for the DAT deck) and doing this will draw less current
(about 200 ma) and run the DAT much longer off the portable power pack
(either one).
While either of these Radio Shack portable powering products can be very
useful, they are not ideal for small size/weight while traveling, especially
for foreign service (although Thomas's unit will recharge from most any
World-Wide power systems) because sometimes you just don't have the needed
mains power available. Also, these external packs are not ideal for getting
longest running time with the D100/M1 DAT decks.
For getting the best solution around for these particular DAT models, I
instead suggest considering the BC-1W (or heftier BD-1W; 25+ or 55+ hours)
DAT powering solution that weighs only 2.2 lbs (BC-1W). This is the TOTAL
weight with also the DAT deck being powered and safely carried inside the
dual compartment carrying case. This is very cool powering system and most
practical. See photos/specifications at: <A

Obviously Dan never went to giants 1994! Minneapolis wasn't much better but
I was 10th row center and I wasn't complaining. I saw a few tapers up there
so I know it was spun. This was before I started taping. But about a year
latter I did a trade with a guy I believe his name was Steve from NJ and on
filler of one of the tapes he made for me was 3 or 4 songs of 6-26-86 and it
sounded dame good. To find out latter he was like 2 rows in front of me at
the show I never got the rest from him so the search still continues.
Three people have emailed me that don't have the tape but say if I find it
to let them know so there is some demand out there for a good tape of this
show. The RFK tapes I have are Schoeps > PCM > FOB.

I recorded last night's (4-20-01) U2 show using the folowing rig:
Core Sound Cardioids > Bass roll-off filter ( @ 120 Hz) > Sony TCD-D8
But the recording level is VERY low. I used the 'mic sens low' with a
recording level of 10. I guess I should have had it 'mic sens high' cause
now I really have to crank up the volume to hear it. Its too bad because the
recording came out pretty good too.
So I started to think I could "Amplify" the recording using CoolEdit Pro. So
I did.
So in all I have three different recording of the same source available for
trade:
#1 Master > DAT
CSC>D8>7pin coaxial>CO3>A6
#2 Master > dEQ > CD-R
CSC>D8>7pin coaxial>Midiman DiO 2496>dEQ>CD-R
#3 Master > dEQ > DAT
CSC>D8>7pin coaxial>Midiman DiO 2496>dEQ>Midiman DiO 2496>coaxial>A6
dEQ = Used CoolEdit Pro Amplify by 26db
dEQ'ing did a nice job of Amplifing the sound. I would rate the quality of
show at 'A-'
I'm sure someone else got a nice recording with out dEQ'ing. There was
ABSOLUTELY no security (some usefull info for other U2 tapers) BUT if your
interested let me know and send a list! I can also send you sound samples of
both the master and the dEQ version
My list: http://www.pearljamshn.com/trading.htm
Thanks,
Rick
p.s. This was only the second show I taped with a DAT recorder. I have MD
experience who I now know to be completly different!

I agree the DA-P20 pre-amp is "only so-so" -- there's a definite
noise floor compared with, say, the much cleaner Tascam DA-P1. But,
in fact, the DA-P20 does support 44.1k recording via the S/PDIF i/o
and it will play back both 48k & 44.1k DATs.

Beck is a featured performer on this week's Futurama, which
revolves around traveling to hippy rock fests.
Unfortunately, many east-coast stations are preempting it for auto
racing.
Looks like the rednecks won out over the hippies once again :-(

hello one and all
this is perhaps one of, if not the, rarest airing of live music on FM
Jonas Hellborg /Shawn Lane /V Selvaganesh /V Umashankar
recent London show
airs on BBC Radio 3 on Friday 4/27 at 2330--100 "Jazz on 3" show
I am asking EVERYONE on here, if they have contacts in UK or satellite
pickup, broadband Internet radio, or know a "friend of a friend" situation.
This is something that should be documented at all costs. [much like the
recent R3 airing of live Peter Brotzmann]. ANY medium is fine and dandy.
****there has got to be some kind of "jam band" connection here, if only for
the Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg.****
V Selvaganesh is the percussionist currently with Remember Shakti. there
is also an Indian vocalist.
THANK YOU to everyone for the effort take care

Still unable to swap some of my recordings, as I cannot transfer my DAT
recordings to my PC, as I am in search of a suitable soundcard.
I will ask again, as I am sure some dat-heads must be using a similar PC
setup to mine.
Seems that there are some problems with soundcards in systems with Socket
A motherboards (for AMD Athlon and Duron processors) based on the new VIA
Apollo KT133 chipset. For instance, the ASUS A7xxx motherboards. Mine is
an A7PRO.
If anyone is using a PC with a similar setup, and is also using a PCI
soundcard, I'd like to know which cards work flawlessly, even if it
required some kind of driver update, etc.
I've heard of problems with these two soundcards:
