From: "Bonnie & Cleve Svetlik" <Svetlik@Stratos.net> Subject: Oktava MK319 Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 14:56:38 -0400 I am considering purchasing a pair of these mikes for non-stealth recording. A while ago there was a posting looking for opinions about the mikes - I did not see a reply. (Might there been a reply off-list?) (My other mikes are Shure SM81's.) Cleve Svetlik
From: Aaron Westendorf <westea@rpi.edu> Subject: ISO: tech help on PCM decoding Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 18:09:31 -0400 This is a resend of a message that didn't appear on either list. If it did make it and I missed the post, I apologize. First of all, I apologize for the lack of immediate B&P, I'm wrapping up my long four years of school in the next week plus, and don't have the time to make offers. Hopefully I'll be back in the community soon, I really miss the trading scene. I'm taking a graduate course in 3D visualization, and for my final project I want to show how sound dissipates from a stereo source in an open environment. Without going into great detail here, I'll be using a wav file as input (prolly some Floyd to give it a good effect ;). For submission we need to create an mpeg of our output. IOW, the visualization will not be real time, and there will be some editing of the output to insert screens of comments and such. So, I need to figure out how to grab the following from the raw data: -frequency(s) of sound -level of output -timecode data I'm quite familiar with how PCM is encoded, just don't know how to put it back to "analog", or generate time code. Also, if anyone knows of any speaker manufacturers that publish data on the output pattern of a model, similar to what is used in regards to microphones, please pass along a URL. Lastly, if anyone has some links handy that discuss sound dissapation and have some equations that can be used to calculate the strength of a sound wave traveling through air over time, I would appreciate that as well. Doing my own hunt for all this, but figure some of the folks reading this have come across some good stuff in their travels. Thanks, and for your help, I invite you to contact me in mid-June once my girl and I get settled down in Houston for a B&P. A long way off, I know, but you can be sure I'll remember your kindness and hook you up when I'm free. Just SHN/CD for now, but with a real job I'm seeing a shiny new R500 in my near future :) cheers, Aaron Ps - just switched to Eudora, if I'm not sending plain text email, **please** kindly inform me. ===================================================== Aaron J. From: "Michiel J.J.M. Oudendijk" <mjjm@worldonline.nl> Subject: ISO: taper for Slobberbone @ Borderline, London, UK - May 1st Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 17:30:22 +0200 Hello! The band Slobberbone from Denton, TX will be touring in Europe the next 2 weeks and as Dutch fans my buddies and I will be documenting the 9 shows in Holland. Due to financial considerations we'll have to skip the London gig, so if anyone in the area is able to tape, we would love a copy. Slobberbone is totally cool with fans taping their shows, their website is at http://www.slobberbone.com If you tape the gig, we've got plenty to trade for it. Happy taping! From: Adam Pease <apease@ks.teknowledge.com> Subject: laptop sound cards + more questions Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 09:23:10 -0700 Folks, I was interested in Gary Blaisdell's question about laptop sound cards. A quick Google search found http://www.cdrecordingsoftware.com/wami_box.html which looks good but is a bit pricey if all you want is SPDIF input to your laptop. Are folks aware of any PCMCIA cards that just have SPDIF connectors and minimal other features? I should also report that I'm enjoying my new CoreSounds Sony 7pin to SPDIF coax cable (thanks to advice from this list). My current hardware setup of Sony TCD D8 -> 7pin -> SPDIF coax -> SoundBlaster Live works well. I then process the input in SoundForge and transfer to CD with EZ-CD-pro. One question that I have is that I thought that (apart from the resampling that SoundBlaster does) I would get a bit for bit copy from DAT to PC. The level controls still affect the input however. Do the sound level controls strictly just attenuate the input? It's hard to tell since the DC8's level control seems a bit less sensitive than the "monitor" level meters on the SoundForge record control window. If levels were too low with that setup, perhaps the battery in the battery box is dead? Have you checked it lately? The common 9 Volt "transistor radio" alkaline battery lasts 300 to 500 hours. Replace it by unscrewing the four screws on the top. Unclip the old battery, clip in the new battery and replace the top with the four screws. It's a good idea to replace the battery at least once a year. Be sure to unplug the mics from the battery box when not in use. I hope that this helped! I used the same setup but on a D100 and got perfect levels at low mic sensitivity with the level control probably around 7-8 (I wasn't looking). This was taping U2 at the Tacoma Dome, about as far away from the stage as it was possible to be. Oops, and also I didn't use the bass rolloff. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com

It was first time I used it. Does anybody else have any other idea why the level was so low? Also... My Y-Adapter is stuck in my 'battery box' any idea why it might be stuck and any clues on how to get it off? I pulled as hard as I could with no luck.
