While this is true of CSBs, I find the CSCs significantly less sensitive
and usually the -20dB mic input is right for fairly loud shows. I believe
I even used mic input with no atten for recording Arlo Guthrie with the
Seattle Symphony.
I have frequently used the CSBs with line in on the D100 for loud shows
but I remain suspicious that there is a problem with high frequency
response doing this. I don't have equipment to test this theory,
however. Len? I know you recommend doing this but the tapes always sound
more bassy and muddy than when I use mic in. I'm thinking -20dB mic in
plus an additional in-line attenuator might be preferable to using line
in.

Muddy bass is most often caused by bass overloading the decks mic input; this
is the 1st amplification stage that is BEFORE the manual level control. All
these binaural mics you see offered have way too much sensitivity to record
concert level bass directly into the mic input. Either use a bass filter to
lower the strong bass and/or go to line input and deal with having barely
enough gain, but get a lot more 'headroom' = cleaner sound from the deck's
analog signal processing circuits.
On the other hand, Sonic Studios DSM microphones are available in 8
sensitivity models that will never have these problems with deck input
distortion when the correct model (sensitivityy) is selected for your purpose.
DSM models are designed correctly in the first place to always use the JUST
THE MIC INPUT, and can be directly powered by the deck (NOTE: most DAT's need
MOD-2 upgrade) with no quality or performance compromises (read no battery
box is needed to get better recordings with proper "Plug-in-(mic)Power"), and
have options of bass filters (if needed) that always work exactly as
advertised.

Hey All,
Did anyone tape the John Hammond concert where Tom Waites comes out to guest
for a few songs? John has recently done an album of all Tom Waites tunes, and
this was a rare treat to see them both together. Charlie Musslewhite was also
on stage I believe. If anybody has this show I would be extremely grateful to
get a copy. I have other Tom Waites, Taj, Richard Thompson, Peter Rowan,
Steve Earl, and other "acoustic" artists to trade, and over 1000 dics of
other bands. Please respond privately and I will forward list.

I have the following left to sell. The Microtech Gefell mics are a matched
pair and are in impeccable shape. Might as well be right out of the box.
In fact I have the boxes straight from Gefell as well as the wooden cases
that house the mics. If you would like to hear a sample of what these have
done for me, let me know and I can give you some samples in .shn form.
The phantom box is a dual channel supply that can run off two 9volts of
external power. Works wonderfully with no noise.

original boxes - $750
(1) Rolls PB-224 Dual Phantom Power Supply - $60
Email me if interested.

They *Should* be, but you have to trust that the person supplying
the source knows what they are doing. Detailed source information
usually indicates the level of competance of the user.

Only an audio-capable DAT drive, and then only with the appropriate
software, and even then, it's not a straight-forward process; download,
decompress, arrange, burn. I get SHN's a lot in trades (on CD media)
and the first thing I do is put it on DAT. I also backup all my
audio to DDS

Hello All,
I have jumped on the dat to cdr bandwagon and no longer need my 2nd dat deck.
I purchased it new from terrapin tapes on 5.27.97 along with the 5 year
extended warranty. The warranty is transferable and good through 5.27.02. I
have all the original packaging, remote control, manual, etc. I'm looking to
get $400.00 for it. Please email me if interested. I live on eastern long
island if any new yawkers would like to take a look at it.
Thanks for the bw!!

I taped Tuesday 4/24/01 at the Star Hill in Charlottesville and had the
only mikes up for the first set. I checked my tape at the show and it
was fine, so I handed my analog tapes to the band. I got home and my DAT
tape was immediately eaten by my deck. Three people ran behind me. I
would appreciate if you would get in contact with me, I still owe the
band a digital copy for their archives.
Also if any body has any ideas on salvaging the DAT it was crumpled
pretty bad at the end,but I got in rolled back up into the cartridge and
was able to rewind it, but I can't get any signal off of it.

The problem is that some folks are using packs that use 3 lead-acid
cells that put out 6.6 volts, or 6 NiCad cells that put out more than
7.2 Volts fully charged. And sometimes they will charge those batteries
while the -M1 is connected, exposing the -M1 to much higher voltages.
Sony specifies the -M1 at 4.5 Volts. We know of another DAT-head (not
kmstraker) who damaged his -M1 using a 6 Volt Eco-Charge pack. It's
worth being careful in this regard.

I love the way mine sound. The PSP-2 really helps them though. :)

Mine are off by about 60 or so; they sound identical to my ears.

I would think that a really quick solution to this might be the addition of
a simple 7805 voltage regulator in your power line. This should take pretty
much anything between 6 and 12V on the input and give you a steady 5V on the
output side. and since the leads are input, ground and output, wiring it
into your power line would be as simple as cutting the + lead, soldering to
the 2 outer leads on the 7805, and stripping back a little bit of the ground
and soldering the center lead there. OK, maybe a little electrical tape
something else to cover the exposed leads might be a good idea too :)
Once this is in place, you could use 3-5 lead/acid cells or 6-8 NiCD/NiMH
cells.

Purchased in December 200 from SonicSense. Good starter preamp and a/d
convertor in one package. Orginal manual and BNC to RCA adapter included.
The unit has a few very very very small cosmetic blemishes on the top, but
functionality is not sacrificed at all. The unit has been well cared for in
my possesion and used for maybe 30 shows. All offers considered.
Thanks for the space,
