Hi,
Anyone have a good recomendation on what to use for the D3? I
would like to go with a rechargeable, Oade or homemade, makes no
difference.
Ok, so obviously I don't know exactly what I need. If I were to go with a
homemade should I go with 6 D batteries or less?(D3's are 9v). Voltage
regulator?? Can anyone help with some info???
Thanks!

be in around Wichita,Ks May 20. He is playing one of
the best sounding Theaters in the country on that

No offense intended Len, because I enjoy products from both you and Mr. Lombardo, but if I wanted to use CSB's without a battery box, that would require a deck upgrade as well. The Sony DAT's just aren't capable of powering a set of mics like CSB's or DSM's the way it is shipped.
And I could be wrong, but I thought Leonard's upgrade did not affect the warranty? I know the Oade's upgrades don't affect it; they ARE authorized Sony repair after all!
This info is of the AFAIK type. I apologize if any of it is erroneous.

No Darrin, you don't sound like a commercial. You sound like a person who
is offering an opinion on equipment that you have used and compared to
other equipment of similar design.
Your post was appropriate, but I feel that way too much commercially
oriented traffic is submitted to this list under the pretense of being
technical advice. I'll see it as "giving back to the community" when the
predominately verbose vendors offer help to people without including thier
commercial signatures or without disparaging the other guy's product.
I think that the reason some vendors aren't seen posting here so much is
that they recognize this as a technical forum, not a commercial market
place. And besides, they advertise through reputation and recommendations
like the one that you posted.

Subject: RE: Req: More info about 10-12-95 Gainesville Phish Schoeps
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 15:38:27 -0400
Greetings!
About five years ago I ran a huge tape tree of a week of Phish shows, and
the last source I managed to score was a wonderful tape of 10-12-95,
Gainesville, Fl, Phish from a friend that plugged into someone running
Schoeps mics. That's all he knew and he can't remember anything about it
now. We treed the tape on rec.music.phish for the week 6 operation
everyshow vine, so a lot of you probably have it.
The tape sounds like a very good tapers section tape (TS was about 125 feet
back on the bleachers and there were perhaps 12-20 mic stands), not boomy at
all. I've heard the AKG 460s of the Fox run two nights before and Schoeps
CMC6/41 for the last night and MK5s of the first night, and the Gainesville
tape sounds more like the Schoeps MK/5 tapes, then the AKG 460s, so I do
_think_ that these are Schoeps, but I have not found any other Schoeps
source for this show. There are too many other variables that might account
for the similarities and, truthfully, they don't sound the same anyhow.
If anyone knows anything about this tape or can remember running Schoeps at
Gainesville, I'd be grateful for the information.
Bandwidth tax: I'll make 5 copies of this show for blanks & postage or
trade.
Peace from Florida,
Michael

Subject: battery pack/batteries for sony m1
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 15:47:46 -0400
Hi everyone,
I just bought a new Sony M1 DAT and I have heard a lot about battery packs
and the voltage for the M1. I have been thinking of going for the Sonic
Studios Battery Pack because I have heard a lot of nightmares about "Dead
Ecocharges". I just read a post from someone saying that Oade makes the
right voltage for the M1 in rechargeable batteries. Also, I have heard to
use C cells instead of D cells.
Should I get the Battery Pack from Sonic Studios and the Oade batteries to
use in it? Can anyone clarify things for me. I am going to get the Oade
cable with the Analog/Digital switch anyway so I figure I might as well
order all at once if the Oade batteries are the best for the M1.
Thanks for your time,
Eric

I talked to paul at pro digital about this subject. He said they have had to
repair a good amount of m1 that used 6 volts. He recomend staying away from
6 volts. I would stick 4.5 volts sony decks dont need another reason to
break.
------------------------------
>>
I can tell you that none of these DAT failures were from using any of Sonic
Studios products which put out no more than 6 volts DAT powering voltage
supply.
If there were any failures, it was from using those rechargeable battery
packs that can put out 6.6 to 7.5 volts that could stress the deck's DC-DC
converters to early failure. Using a deck while charging these type
batteries is asking for trouble.
Best to qualify these general statements so that hysteria is kept to a
minimum with a few sane facts.
6 volts as supplied by Sonic Studios BC-1W and BD-1W is safe for the TCD-D100
and PCM-M1 decks with NO problems reported by anyone using these external
particular powering products for the 5 years of offering these; they will are
just 3.6 to 6 volts when operating off the recommended 4 C or D Alkaline
cells. No stress or problems, just long, long running times. I use these
and the rechargeable systems I sell to others with never any problems or
expect to see any such problems as reported here with using other systems.
If you use anybody else's fabricated and non-engineered supply, and have
problems, you've been warned here about the differences in "6 volt"
RECHARGEABLE battery solutions (Lead/Acid & NiMH types) that are NOT all
equally safe to use with these decks.
Chargers for these battery packs reach 7.5 volts to 8.2 volts when charging
these types of batteries; this is way over the safe 6 volt limits (as I've
stated) that is safe for the Sony DAT.
No wonder some of these decks fail if someone is powering the deck WHILE ALSO
CHARGING THE BATTERIES! Like who would sell you this kind of DAT battery
system anyway?
Certainly no sane engineer with a business and reputation at stake! Maybe
these were made by amateurs for themselves and/or sold to other amateurs
looking to save a buck or two with home-brew solutions?
See: h
ttp://www.sonicstudios.com/batsys98.htm for the BC-1W and BD-1W with 25
and 55+ hours running time; you'll NEVER have a DAT deck repair resulting
from their use.
I you insist on the bulk, weight, and shorter runtimes of a rechargeable
battery for powering TCD-D7/8/100 and PCM-M1 decks, I also have these in
LEAD/ACID ONLY that WILL NOT harm the deck because you cannot connect up the
battery WHILE IT'S CHARGING.
For those who do not know, Lead/Acid cells are exactly 2 volts PER/CELL, so
three cells is exactly 6 volts (only 6.45 volts for a short time when fresh
off the charger). No one has ever had a problem with any deck caused by
using a Sonic Studios external DAT battery powering system.
I have an excellent reputation for doing the right thing with live recording
microphones AND battery solutions that do not compromise the deck's
specifications for acceptable inputs.
So no damaging charging voltages will ever be applied to the deck from these
6 volt batteries that put out just 6 volts when fully charged and ready for
service.
A little education to know the differences is smarter than just believing the
hysterical statements I've seen here by those who can't discriminate and who
will quickly shoot down everything that moves (or powers DAT decks with a
safe 6 volts).
I also supply patented DSM stereo microphones that never need the deck's
input circuitry to undergo warranty invalidating changes to operate without
overload distortion or need attenuation networks to record really loud
concert venues. DSM mics may be fully powered to full performance by the
mini-deck and will always use the MIC input. I believe it's better to do it
right from the beginning so customers stay satisfied with their choices of
products and vender.

hey all,
sorry for the blatantly off-topic post, but I'm thinking
about picking up an HHB CDR830 "Burn IT". Every on-line retailer
I've visited says to "call" but I figured that someone here
has to know where I can find the absolute best price on this
unit (brand new only!). Dealers are welcome to e-mail me.
My Marantz CDR630 is less than a year old and works flawlessly,
but I'm always itching for an upgrade. If anybody wants to make
me an offer for the Marantz, be my guest. It can be had for pretty
darn cheap.
Also does anyone know if the coax outs on the old Nakamichi
CD player 2 tranfers track ids?? i tracked one down (love those naks!!)
and it should be here within a week or two. I need to know if I can
sell my Marantz PMD-320 CD player. It was one of the few decks that
had a coax out when I was player shopping last year. Sounds great (even
has pitch control), but I really wouldn't need it if my new NAK cd
player's coax transmits track ids.
Please e-mail me privately as I'm behind on my digests.
many thanks,
Anthony

I ran into an identical problem when I started doing digital transfers.
The issue turned out to be a hard drive that was too slow.
First turn off all background operations, e.g. personal firewall, AV
software, browsers software and (if you use MS Office) be sure to turn
off "Fastfind".
If the problem stil occurs you probably need to upgrade to a 7200rpm
hard drive. Some 5400rpm drives will work succesfully but some aren't
quite as
fast as they claim to be (or at least mine wasn't). I tried all kinds
of fixes and the drive upgrade finally did it for me. Have never had the
problem again.

Owen
