Hi everyone,
I noticed that Levon Helm, the former drummer from The Band
is playing near me. I think I seem to remember reading somewhere
that he is open to taping. Can anyone confirm/dispute this?
Please reply off list.
Thanks,
Eric

No offense intended Len, because I enjoy products from both you and Mr.
Lombardo, but if I wanted to use CSB's without a battery box, that would
require a deck upgrade as well. The Sony DAT's just aren't capable of
powering a set of mics like CSB's or DSM's the way it is shipped.
And I could be wrong, but I thought Leonard's upgrade did not affect the
warranty? I know the Oade's upgrades don't affect it; they ARE authorized
Sony repair after all!
This info is of the AFAIK type. I apologize if any of it is erroneous.
Chris
>>
The CSB mics can be powered directly by a Sony DAT and regardless of deck
mod, CSBs performance is compromised unless run at a higher voltage (need the
battery box solution for best performance). Sonic Studios DSM mics operate
electrically very differently and will accomplish FULL PERFORMANCE by being
powered by any stock Sharp MiniDisc deck or a Sony DAT. As you mentioned,
you need the MOD-2 for Sony DAT powering of the DSM mics, but realize that
MOD-2 ONLY increases the current available, NOT the voltage as is needed by
CSB mic design.
In other words, operating a DSM mic at a higher voltage DOES NOTHING to
improve the already excellent recording performance as DSM operates at high
current low voltage mode. CSB operates at high voltage low current mode.
DSM is ideal for being powered off the Low voltage available from Sony mic
powering feature, except Stock Sony DAT gives way too low current for
powering DSM and this is why MOD-2 is needed. CSB (and ALL these other small
electret mics) work on high voltage low current mode so they will need the
battery box with at least 3 volts to as much as 10 volts to operate at top
performance.
THE OADE SONY DAT DECK MODE:
The internal modification done by OADE removes Sony stock chip resistor
components and replaces them with a different values to drastically reduce
the gain of the mic amp. This is to allow a hot mic to not overload the deck.
They also sometimes replaces the Dual Preamplifier IC if the owner requests
additional modifications.
There is nothing technically wrong with lowering the gain of the mic stage
for certain applications. The only problem with this modification is the
warranty question and occasional problems with these decks for not having
enough mic gain when working with lower sensitivity mics (like the DSM)
and/or if recording more acoustic subjects where these decks cannot function
to get adequately high enough recording VU levels. I've had to rework a few
of these decks in the past because of this and buyers of these decks should
consider getting a verbal agreement as to what it would take to bring the
modified deck back to normal gain if this is later needed to record other
subjects, use lower output type mics, or if trying to sell the deck to
someone who requires the normal mic gain structure of the stock deck.
The OADE type of modification can easily void the Sony warranty for most all
service done by other Sony Authorized service agents EXCEPT OADE, who did the
original alterations. Other service organizations will work on these decks
only if familiar with the changes and if they are willing to accept the
altered deck parameters when final testing the deck for proper mic amplifier
operation.
The Sonic Studios mic powering upgrade removes nothing of the stock
circuitry. MOD-2 only adds (in tandem) 5 surface mount components that work
along with the stock components.
Sony has looked at the Sonic Studios DAT 'Plug-in-(mic)Power' upgrading done
here a few times in the past 9 years and has always realized the changes are
superficial to the stock deck changing none of the decks signal processing
parameters and has so far honored any needed warranty work on decks with the
MOD-2 installed.

Subject: battery pack/batteries for sony m1
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 15:47:46 -0400
Hi everyone,
I just bought a new Sony M1 DAT and I have heard a lot about battery packs
and the voltage for the M1. I have been thinking of going for the Sonic
Studios Battery Pack because I have heard a lot of nightmares about "Dead
Ecocharges". I just read a post from someone saying that Oade makes the
right voltage for the M1 in rechargeable batteries. Also, I have heard to
use C cells instead of D cells.
Should I get the Battery Pack from Sonic Studios and the Oade batteries to
use in it? Can anyone clarify things for me. -------clip'd------

I'd suggest NOT mixing powering system components, go with one or the other,
as you're seeming to be configuring something that wasn't designed to work
together. Putting a 4.5 volt regulator in-series with a higher voltage
battery will tend to diminish chances of deck damage from a too high voltage
battery type, but regulation always wastes battery power by turning voltage
drop into (wasted) heat. This is the OADE approach and the run times will be
more limited with this type of design. The extra regulator dissipation (.5
-1.5 watts worth of warmth) may only be welcome in colder winter conditions.
When the low battery indicator on the DAT functions usefully, there is little
chance being caught short of run time or of abuse by discharging a
(rechargeable) battery repeatedly too deeply where it will be permanently
damaged. When everything is working correctly, the deck indicates the
approximate battery capacity left AND the deck will shut down before a
rechargeable battery gets to be damaged by being discharged too much. I
somehow doubt there's proper deck indications or battery safeguards in place
with the OADE system; so be careful to check for these features when shopping
around for an external powering solution.
My approach here has so far been to use a type of battery with having just
enough voltage for externally powering the deck and that fits with more
normal deck indication and shutdown operation. This way no power is being
wasted for voltage regulation and the system is much simpler with far less to
go wrong, and gives low battery power warning; this is also the most reliable
type of system.
In other words, if you take a battery supply made to power a DAT for a
certain number of hours with Alkaline cells (like Sonic Studios BC-1W), and
replace the alkaline cells with NiCad or NiMH rechargeable types, you will
get far less running time, less reliability, and get no indication of battery
capacity left to safely continue without a rude power-down interruption.
Using rechargeables in this situation also requires careful
charging/maintenance practices, and you will not easily know when to quit
using them before you've run these pricey/somewhat delicate rechargeables too
far into a damaging discharge.

Leonard Lombardo

I've been using a pair of KM-140's for about one year, seldom stealth,
and usually use them ORTF (110 degrees, 17cm spacing), although I
started out using them (non-stealthy) approx. x/y 90 before I got the
Neumann ORTF bar. I don't have the Neumann swivel, just the bar (Hey
Andrew, are you reading this???) but sure would like to. The way I get
x/y is to use a regular stereo bar, two goosenecks, and two mic clips
(semi-flexible plastic, like the AKG's) and leave the capsules on the
mic bodies. . . it seems like a pain to me though 'cause I have not
removed the active cables from them in months.
I am glad I have a limo connector (you could have any type of
quick-release) in the active cables, that way, I can leave the bodies
on the preamp, and not have to be chained to the taping bag all night
when I'm not rolling. Get up and use the can before the show, get a
drink, then go back to the seat where someone is minding your bad for me
( you do have an assistant, right?) and plug in before the lights go
down. It's also nice to leave the bodies in the preamp and store the
mics separately just to carry them. . . I velcro the preamp to a flat
piece of wood with a handle cut into it in order to have a place to wrap
the ends of the active cables. I should post a photo of it some time.
I have not used them much for stealth, but from the 4 times I ran, I
think they are ok, but they dig into my skull a little. It would be
great if someone made a little skullcap to hold them in place on one's
head. . . I like wearing the windscreens to prevent the digging. Also,
I think that the capsules are a little more forgiving of handling
violations with the windscreens on. These mics will make a big bassy
noise if you so much as touch them while they're running without the
screens.
The other majorly cool thing about the 140's is that they're really
forgiving of poor location, you could make a great tape from near a side
wall with these babies. Hard to use them wrong, but I guess you could
make a bad-sounding tape if you had a bad enough sound source!
I'm interested to read other users' responses too, and maybe I can pick
up some tips!! like a little Neumanns User Group.. . . that spells NUG.
. . heh heh.

short answer: yes, if the checksums match they are exceedingly likely to
be exactly the same as the files which were used to generate the
checksums.
long one: Shorten has a checksum feature which allows you to see if the
files you have match the files that originated. It is very easy to use
on a mac or a PC, and you can use the feature to compare files of
shorten or wav format. I'm sure http://ww.etree.org has some helpful
pages to inform you further, but I use Shorten for all my important
audio file backups, and have yet to have a problem with it.
I also use it to check CD-extraction hardare-software combos to make
sure I am getting repeatable and reliable extractions from audio CD's.
I extract a track or two several times, giving a slightly different file
anme each time, then have shorten make checksums for all the files.
Look at the text of the checksums: If the tracks are identical, the
checksums will match perfectly. That doesn't tell you if it's the same
as the original, but it tells you if you can extract repeatably. . . off
the subject, I know, but sort of tangentially related.

Subject: NAB 2001 Field Report (some DAT content)
Reply-To: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com>
Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 17:53:53 -0600
Hey All,
I just got back from the National Association of Broadcaster's (NAB) show in
Vegas and wanted to share some news. While this show is focused on
broadcasting (TV & Radio), and certainly isn't the audio extravaganza that
AES (Audio Engineering Society) is, we still got to spend some time with our
friends at A.E.A. (the Ribbon Microphone (and mic stand people), Benchmark,
DPA, Fostex, HHB, Neumann, Schoeps, Sony, and Tascam.
While nothing was particularly exciting on the immediate front for tapers,
here are a few items that could be of interest.
I found out that Alps, the producer of DAT transports is about to, or
already has, cease(d) production. They will continued building the data
drives but not the audio units. With this in mind, I immediately pried into
the issue with Tascam. They indicated that they have a supply of transports
to cover production for another 2-3 years but once they are gone, we will be
looking for another field recording format.
With this in mind, I began my investigation with all of our favorite
manufacturers, and even a number of companies that are less familiar to us
in the taping community.
At this point, no one is showing any new recording device that looks like a
new frontier for tapers any time soon. I spoke with all of the prominent
manufacturers who are currently showing studio hard-disc recorders and
inquired about future possibilities for portable versions. At this time,
nobody has anything in the works.
Fostex, however, shared some information with me about their new DVD-Ram
recorder (to be available soon with a list of roughly $7,000.00). It's not
portable and it doesn't come packaged with a dancing girl (but it does
support time code). They indicated intent to follow this up with a portable
unit to replace the PD-4 but it will be around $5,000.00. Note that this is
a DVD-Ram machine, not a DVD-R(W). The DVD-Ram discs offer 4.7Gig of
storage, enough for 4.5 hours of 24-bit/48kHz or 2.25.hours of 24/96-not
very exciting with discs priced at $30.00 each.
On another interesting note, I had a chat with folks at Neumann regarding
the use of condenser microphones to feed line-level inputs without a
pre-amp. They were astonished that anyone would even try to do it and
offered to write about the reasons why. Keep an eye on our website's
"Resource Center" link for their feedback.
Benchmark's Sonic AD2K+ was a focal point of nine magazines offering to
write reviews and develop feature stories. Keep an eye on all the great pro
audio magazines for field reports and words from the pros. As well, the
AD2K+ has been picked up for distribution by CTC Audio. Watch for it at your
favorite pro audio equipment dealer.
Utilizing the Benchmark AD2K+, Sonic Sense showed our 24-bit field recording
system using the Sony VIAO as the recorder and we will be out with a bunch
of prominent professional sound effects recording companies using the system
shown on our website. It seems that those little samples of our favorite
bands, combined with some simple recordings made while walking around the
neighborhood one night after work, proved to be quite impressive to them.
My highlight:
Standing with Trevor Pratte and watching a guy from Lucas Films giggling in
the chair of our demo space (not an ideal listening center), while we played
a sample of a passing car recorded in 16-bit on a DAT versus the laptop
recording made at 24-bit. You'd think guys like this had heard it all
already, but he was visiting the Benchmark booth to get information on the
value of storing recordings at 24-bit. Having made several comments about
the improved detail, high-end definition, and overall feeling of the
recording that the 24-bit source revealed, he walked away saying, "I'm going
to get my way. I have confidence about this now." It sure added to ours as
well.
Happy Recording Everybody,
