This is probably a overly familiar question by now but does anyone have
advice on current best
option for audio dat>hard drive transfer? The Datport thing still seems to
be available- worthwhile? Or a Soundblaster Platinum? Can't be as easy as
just getting either of these, can it?
(I'm currently dubbing from dat to cd via audio cd recorder, then from that
cd onto hard disk, then after editing back again onto cd via burner. Which
is just silly.)
I have a pretty basic AMDK6, 128 Mb ram, 1x20 gig, 1x40gig hard drives.
Aiwa SD H200 dat.
Any thoughts appreciated....

I am new to the whole DAT scene.... I would like to buy a Sony D8 model
DAT, maybe even with a patch cable and a few DAT's if that can be
done...So i can start patching in at shows. Anyways, I would not like

For Sale:
Used 60, 90 and 120 Meter DAT tapes. All have been recorded only once. Music taped is Phish, Grateful Dead and a few other local NYC artists.
Note that I am not "selling the music". Just face value for the tapes. Actually, less than the face value for the tape.
Actual tapes are Maxell, SONY, Panasonic, etc.
Tape count is as follows:
60 Meter Tapes: 18 pieces @ $2.00 each = $36.00
90 Meter Tapes: 44 pieces @ $2.50 each = $110.00
120 Meter Tapes: 32 pieces @ $3.00 each = $96.00
Grand Total = $242.00
Willing to sell in blocks of 10 tapes.
Anyone interested in purchasing the whole lot, I will sell for $200.00
All purchasers responsible for $5.00 shipping costs.

DAT recorders have built-in de-emphasis circuitry which should normally cut
in automatically when it detects a pre-emphasis flag, so if you are
recording digitally from a domestic cd player to a DAT recorder you should
not have do do anything. No need to feel squeamish about a DAT tape
containing its music in a pre-emphasized format <g>.
If your transfer route is via pc - for editing, song re-ordering etc. -
then you will likely lose the flags and your DAT tape will sound too bright.
How bright? The 15/50us pre-emphasis boosts as follows:

If you are uncertain how that amount of skewing affects your sound, then
you could "practise" by taking a familiar record and imposing the above
equalization, for example with a wave editor. (Some software or plug-ins
have the emphasis curve in a convenient pre-set)

There has been a lot of confusion about the ZA2 with AMD processors on VIA
chipset motherboards lately. I took a close look at Greg's warning on the
web site. It specifically mentions the Apollo KT133 chipset. It noted that
newer chipsets should work just fine.
So, I plugged the ZA2 into my Abit KT7A-RAID motherboard, which has the
slightly-newer KT133A chipset. Once I remembered to turn off the
auto-insert notification on my CDROM drive, everything worked flawlessly.
In fact it worked far better than I was ever able to get it to work in my
Asus P2B motherboard, which had flaky results at best. I did hours of
captures over the weekend, 44.1, 48 and 48->44.1 and they all worked without
any problems at all. Those of you with ZA2 cards wanting to upgrade to
Durons or Thunderbirds should feel free to do so now.

Hi DAT Heads
I tried a little experiment this weekend at the KW shows in Fort Collins
recording with a Dell Inspiron 3800 600mhz laptop. It worked really well
(though I'm not ready to give up my DAT just yet) and I was wondering if
anyone else has done this and how it worked for you. I was lucky enough to
have a spot to plug in as I think Lou (KW's soundguy) thought it was a cool
idea. I think power may end up being my only issue in the future, but a
couple extra battery packs will solve that.
One thing I know I am going to want is a digital in somehow, but I am not
aware of anything like that for a laptop. This isn't a major issue as most
of the time the SDBD feed is analog anyway - but for doing matrix recordings
when getting a digital signal from a nice rig it would be nice to maintain
the digital chain if possible.
Thoughts or Ideas?
