hey everyone
I taped the McGarrigles (w/ Martha as support) last night, what a cute sweet
family affair it was (female family members; no roofie or Loudin); PCM-M1 &
Sonic Studios. I haven't heard the dat yet but if you want to hedge yourself
and set up a trade, let me know; I may be interested in Rufus stuff for a
friend, plus I'm seeing Rufus next Sunday. Two straight Sundays of
Wainwright kids, what a concept! I'm not sure who else was taping last night
as it was a seated show and I didn't see any familiar taping faces...

As many of you know, DAT machines will soon be a thing of the
past. Most companies have already discontinued their DAT
machines (Sony Professional continues to make M1, R300, R500,
etc, but has raised prices significantly). Instead, the future offers
CDR, DVD-Audio, and MiniDisc, none of which meet our music
needs quite as DAT did.
In addition, many of us have large collections of DAT tapes, which
we might as well throw in an incinerator if we can't get a machine
to play them on.
Fostex discontinued the D5 last year, but they raised the price on
their existing stock to the point where we would have to charge
$800 for the machine. Many years ago, $800 was a fair price for
the D5, but not lately! At the DAT Store, we held out and refused
to buy the machines until Fostex would drop the price, at least
down to what we were paying in early 2000.
Fortunately, this has occurred, and we now have 12 (count 'em -
12) brand new Fostex D5's for sale at our favorite low price, just
$594.
If your DAT collection is important to you, you owe it to yourself to
buy a spare machine. Repairs on old DAT machines are not only
expensive, but the parts are increasingly hard (or impossible) to
get. A new Fostex D5 will help sustain your DAT collection until
the next generation of audio recording becomes practical.
We also have in stock - probably for the last time - Sony D8's and
D100's, and Sony M1's (the M1 is the only current model of
Walkman-size portable DAT recorder). Price on all of these
models is the same, but since the M1 is a "Sony Professional"
product, we're not allowed to advertise the price - email please.
Please email me at gdavis@loop.com for more info, or phone
the store at (310) 828-6487, 11am-5pm pacific time, Mon-Fri.
Thank you!

Tabor, and just a little Housemartins. (I'm also interested in The

Hi Bill, Paul, (and All),
Oops! I forgot to mention a couple other interesting points from NAB.
Sound Devices is now shipping the USBPre 1.5. They have added a coaxial
input/output and it runs directly through the USB input like the original.
This is quite cool since it operates like a nice digital interface for all
computers and can be used in the field as pre-amp/a-d converter for those
interested in trying some laptop recording. While there are some
complications to this, including drain on computer batteries, it is a nice
way to record short performances and it is very well suited for musicians
wanting to record in remote locations. Price is quite competitive with other
high-end sound cards. Call or email for details.
I spoke with the folks at Digigram regarding any future plans to develop a
24/96 version of the VXPocket PCM/CIA laptop interface card and they insist
that they will not even attempt to do so. When I challenged them with
questions about the RME Hammerfall DSP 24/96 card, they indicated that it
was only possible due to the routing via firewire. I am quite psyched with
the results using the VX Pocket V2, but anxiously await feedback from anyone
trying other approaches in the field. We'll aim to get a Hammerfall card in
here soon and input regarding its performance to anyone who is interested.
For those who are interested in laptop recording, the following group is a
great way to share experiences as we are all trying this together.

A quick note, I too have a abit kt7a raid (at 1450 mhz:)), this has the via
KT133A chipset, the za2 will record fine with it, but I will get slight pops
on playback with the digi out- its only really an issue on the rare occasion
you need to go shn>dat. I think there is hope for this combo, as I see a lot
of info about conflicts with SB live and pops on playback at the
viahardware.com website. I havent really dug into solving that, as I want to
get a usb soundcard to use with my pc and my laptop anyway... This card
worked great for me in my old pc, though, should work great for anyone
without a VIAKT133 chipset. Dont be scared that you cant upgrade with it
either, the KT133 is on its way out to make room for the DDR chipsets
anyway....

Don't buy SBL Platinum. Digital transfers 1:1 are impossible with the card.
There are several "features":
- 1-bit noise. If you try to record from digital source (MIDI, CD-SPDIF,
SPDIF-IN etc.) with digital silence (0's) at input, you will not see all
0's, but 1-bit noise. This behavior also degrades dynamic range by 6dB.
- DC offset. Sometimes, mainly at digital output there is DC-offset at about
-70dB.
- Non-equal levels. If you record from digital source (SPDIF-IN) and adjust
the recording level to 100% (0dB), the recorded wave is louder, in most
cases with clipping. You get approximately equal levels at 57% (what's the
number?!).
- Probably you cannot turn off the DSP and tone controls. There are several
mixer options in the driver (BypassBass etc.), but they don't work if you
add them to the registry.
- The card is internally locked at 48kHz with its own clock master. You
cannot enforce the card to operate at for example 44.1kHz. Working with
sampling rates other than 48kHz is possible, but via internal 8-point
interpolation, thus digital bit-accurate transfers at other sampling rates
are impossible. Next, you cannot synchronize internal clock with external
source (SPDIF-IN), thus digital bit-accurate transfers are impossible at
48kHz too (due to the drifts).
- Synchronization is difficult at sample rates different from 48kHz. At
44.1kHz for example, playback runs at 44100, but recording at 44108
(difference about 180ppm). This makes multitrack recording difficult if you
don't use 48kHz (bundled Cubasis VST _requires_ 48kHz for proper operation).
IMHO, this is also due to the internal interpolation.
- IMHO: Some features (1-bit noise, DC offset and non-equal levels) of SBL
make me nearly sure, that digital inputs are implemented as D/A with clock
from input -> lowpass filter -> A/D with clock from the card. This is very
cheap solution for "synchronization", sampling rate converter etc.
Finally, if you want good sound card for games, playing MP3s and _home_
analog recording, buy SBL Player 1024. SBL Platinum with expansion kit
(LiveDrive/LiveDrive II) makes illusion of digital I/O, but the digital I/O
there is not true. Thus SBL Platinum is only expensive toy.
I'm afraid nobody can tell you which card is the best for you. I can
recommend M-Audio (MidiMan) Delta Audiophile 2496 (coax SPDIF IN+OUT, analog
stereo IN+OUT, MIDI IN+OUT) or Delta DiO 2496 (coax+optical SPDIF IN+OUT,
analog stereo OUT). See http://www.m-audio.com/m-audio.htm for more.
Personally, I have Audiophile 2496 and transfers between PC (Cel/500, 256MB
RAM, 10GB ATA-66 HDD) and DAT (Sony PCM-R300) are OK and precise.
> I have a pretty basic AMDK6, 128 Mb ram, 1x20 gig, 1x40gig hard drives.
> Aiwa SD H200 dat.
Your computer configuration is sufficient for operations up to 48kHz with
Delta series.

Ondrej

Radio 2 shows----sometimes they have some decent rock on here. typically on
Saturdays 1530--1830. within this slot there will be a live concert. this
week 5/5 is Neil Finn and band.
hope someone can help me (and all of us) out and scoop some nice Jazz and

Hi all-
I'll be taping several upcoming U2 shows from the floor, and would
love to hook up with anyone else planning on taping from the floor, so
that we can buffer each other to a degree. I'll be attending Lexington,
Columbus, Indianapolis, Chicago Sunday, and possibly Chicago Saturday.
Please get in touch if you'd like to try to tape together.
I have a few extra floor tickets which I'm hoping to sell to
people willing to hang out with me and stay quiet to act as a buffer of
silence. Extra tickets: 1 for Lexington, probably 1 for Columbus,
probably 1 for Indy.
I also have extra seated tickets for Columbus and Indy, which
should be decent for taping and are definitely close to stage for good
enjoyment of the show.
I'm looking to sell all tickets at face + TM ripoff.
I do need a single floor ticket for Chicago Saturday if anyone's
willing to sell at face+TM...and I'd be happy to send a copy of my
recording if it turns out, naturally.
Thanks!

$2.25 for sony dds 60 and 90 meter (DG-60P and DG-90P) from
http://oade.com works better than any deal I have ever heard of, also I
think cascade will match that, their info was posted here recently. . .
http://www.cascademedia.net/cgi-bin/cascade/dat is the link.
Disclaimer: I am not an employee of either company and personally have
never heard of cascade before, although they have a very
professional-looking website. I have been dealing with the oades for
over five years, and been very satisfied with everything they've helped
me with. I would go to them, as they have a history of being leaders in
the field of portable remote recording and they're also really cool
guys.
Further ideas- for audio grade tapes, the HHb's (DAT-125) are of
excellant quality, I suggest Full Compass in madison WI
http://www.fullcompass.com or the aforementioned cascade. Full compass
will match advertised prices and are also very professional, I have
dealt with them here in madison for several years, and althought they
are kinda corporate, they can get good deals for you.
