Maybe I'm being blasphemous, because I'm on the DAT-head's list :), but I would sure love to see this replace the DAT in the next couple of years:
A 20gb, laptop sized (or smaller) HD recorder to replace the DAT. Records in 3 switchable modes: SACD(2.8mhz/1 bit stereo), DVD-Audio (192khz/24 bit stereo), and CD-audio (44.1khz/16 bit stereo). Mic and Line In (could be switchable, like PCM-M1), SCSI and Digital Coaxial output.
This could fit 10 hours at CD quality, 2.5 at SACD quality, and I'm not sure how much at DVD audio quality, but probably quite a bit; more than SACD.
What do you all think? Totally impossible? I would hope that Sony would have something similar being developed for the business market, but who knows. Just a pipe dream, I guess.

found this cool thing:
http://www.electrofuel.com/
Will power a laptop for up to 16 hours. Read reviews online...testers
have had it run their laptops for ~14-15 hours. So, that'd be more then
enough for a 5 hours tops at most concerts. And, the obvious advantage
is it lets you buy the laptop of your choice, don't have to buy that
miniature Sony one just for power reasons. It'll also let you save a
buttload of money (that sony is like $2100, but there are a lot of
laptops for much less). Isn't the quad power supply for the Sony like
$500 anyways? Basically, you can power any laptop for about $500 for a
long time...

Actually, not impossible at all. There is burrently a cute little device
called the Nomad Jukebox being sold by Creative Labs. It has a 6 gig HD,
but is easily upgradable to 20 gig. It only has line in, not mic in, but
that's certainly easy enough to change. The current sampling rates are 16
bits at 48k, 44.1k, 32k, 24k, 22.05k, 16k, 12k and 11.025khz. It has
something labelled "Input Gain" which can be set from 0-15, as well as
something labelled "boost". I have not used miine to record, but I imagine
there are some on this list who have and they might be able to give you some
feedback.
Given that this is available now, i imagine that better solutions will be
available in the near future.

>Just wondering what security has been like for the
>Mark Knopfler shows thus far, especially after hearing
>rumors that he's not against fans taping (though apparently
>not to the extent of officially endorsing this either :).
a friend of mine taped the show at the tower in philly last thursday and he
told me that security were a total bitch up in the balcony/loge, that
security were "hounding" (his word to describe when security at a venue
makes an obvious presence of themselves, and that they were constantly
walking around and looking at people etc)
i went to the show the following night with tickets on the floor, about 12
rows back in the right center section, and security were non-existent where
i was; i only saw one "goon" all night and he was there only after being
called over by the ushers for somebody smoking (as far as i could tell)
that being said, i want to add that i had the wierdest taping experience
i've ever had that night! this story might be useful to others, or maybe
even provide some comic relief, so i'll tell it here
i got to the venue right after the opening act and went right up to get
situated in my seat, check it out, get my deck/mics almost ready to go etc
but i found that in my row there were already people sitting in what might
be my seat and most of that row had already settled in; it is a pain at the
tower to find your actual seat on the floor ever since they ripped up the
real seats in the front section and replaced them with metal chairs with no
seat numbers on them
so to find your exact seat number (unless you know which aisle to start
counting from), you have to ask one of the ushers
so i ask an usher and she checks it out and says something like "oh, i've
already sat people there, i made a mistake, how about i upgrade you to
somewhere else..."
so we talk about that and i said that was ok with me depending on where she
suggests BUT that i did not want to moved somewhere only to have to be moved
again later (i have been in that situation b4 and obviously it is NOT
something you want to do if trying to tape!)
to make a long story short, it turns out that there was a spot where there
no seats put down right next to the center aisle in the row behind mine, so
she just got me a folding chair & i sat there - that was fine with me, cause
the folding chair at least was cushioned, and much more comfortable than
those awkward metal torture chairs that are normally down there, plus i
could get more comfy there and spread my legs out etc etc
but what i didn't plan on was about 3 songs into the show a different usher
brought up another folding chair and sat it down right next to me, and
proceeded to use it to rest his butt for the remainder of the concert!!! so
there i am "stealth" taping with mics hanging off my ears sitting right next
to an usher!!! i got a kick out of that, it was actually kind of funny, and
i don't think he noticed that i was taping, but if he did he didn't bother
me
>How has the sound quality been for his tour? (guess this
>partly depends on the PA system at the particular venue)
sound was great at the tower, at least from my seat
your mileage WILL vary, good luck taping

Subject: mics for sale
Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 22:14:07
Unfortuanately, I had 2 buyers back out, so I still have a pair of mics for
sale. They are: pair Beyerdynamic MCE 83 cardioid condensor mics, freq resp
40-20,000 hz, warm open sound, with a mild boost in the mid-highs. I paid
$460/pair new and used them only once. Not long after I upgraded to the
MBHO's, and can't afford to hang onto them, with the summer concert season
right around the corner. They require 48 volt phantom power, so you would
need power boxes, a pre, or they can be run off a DA-P1. I have the 1
sample recording I did of a local band to offer or some older cassette
masters from when I rented a pair some years back. They should make some
taper pretty happy. I would like $400 but will take offers....Dave

correctly will get the CDs free, no B&P! SBD>DAT>M-Audio AP2496>Sound Forge

I will take two trades for it as well. Preference is given to people that

I'd prefer all these discs go to some shorten-savvy digital audio

if you're That Guy(tm), drop me a line! even if you're not, a b&p is
fine too if you want 'em really bad. just don't make me explain how

Hi,
I am looking for any players than can play an audio DAT (recorded in LP
mode) faster than real time.
With either analog or digital (probably not SPDIF for this type of
thing) outputs.
We have a large number of tapes that we would like to transfer to
computer, and to do that faster than real-time (ie: faster than they
were recorded). At the moment this takes four hours per tape,
and we would at *least* like to cut this in half.
Thanks,

Hey Now!
Bronchitis has me up from a coughing jag, so why not read my favorite forum?
I bought U2's "October" on vinyl WAY back when it came out in 1981..... God,
was that 20 years ago??!!
I passed on the chance to see them back then, when they were still that new
band from Ireland. Ticket prices to see them these days are just too rich
for my blood. I was not gonna trade for any of the recent tour, even though
my brother is taking my 2 nieces to see them in Columbus and it would make a
nice gift........
BUT! After "Michael in Mad City's" post, I would like to get a copy on
disc.
Hey Michael, Here's a BIG OLE request to TREE your great recording. You have

FYI, a recent post suggested taping from the heart was an ideal location.
WRONG. Due to the odd, overhanging PA set-up you'll come away with crap.
Mid-floor just outside of the heart or side stage is a better spot. If
you're running cards aim them to a point high above the stage.
ISO U2 from the current tour, only. Will offer this up for general trade or
tree it at some point in the future. Please no grovels in the meantime.
CDR only. I dont want the wear on my DAT recorders. Send me a note with U2
Minne as the subject along with a list of your masters or sources from the
current tour.
WARNING:You'll want to be sitting down when you push play on your cd player
for this one. I take no responsibility for those who do not heed this
warning. Suggestion: pop in disc 2, listen to Bad and Where The Streets
Have No Name first to cleanse the pallet, then pop disc1 in your player and
go from there.
