It only supports the lowest form of VCD recording. The Amoisonic VDR-2000 for about the same price, offers SVCD - about twice the quality (half the recording time). I've now been testing the DataVideo VDR3000, and it brings even better quality to video cd recording, but at a price ($1600 - ouch). For more info on the Amoisonic, write Lynn directly in China: lynn@amoisonic.com It was $370 + $130 postage last I checked... don't know if this is still true. Thank you, --Gary

The main drawback is the mpeg-1 format, which results in a pixilated picture on a TV or on full-screen computer, though it looks quite good in a window. It is very easy to use, and the CD-Rs it burns can be copied in a Tascam CD-D4000 dual deck machine. From: Warren Melnick <warren.melnick@astata.com> Subject: RE: Terapin VCD maker Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 11:12:03 -0400 Pioneer DVD units seem to be the most CDR-friendly models on the market. I have a DVP-525 and I ordered a DVC-603 (5-disc changer with progressive scan output) yesterday. The 525 plays any CDR or CDRW media I have ever burned on. It does VCD, SVCD, XVCD and XSVCD, although I think the usable limit is 2500kb for the system stream. From: "da9ve stovall" <da9ve@geek.com> Subject: Tool in Chicago? Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 09:13:28 -0700 Hey everybody. Sorry for the plaintive, lame post, but is anyone taping the Tool show in Chicago (Riviera) on the 17th of May? Secondly, I'd love to work out SOME kind of trade for a copy, if you are, and FIRSTLY, I'd be grateful for any info about tickets for this show. They apparently go on sale tomorrow (Saturday 5th), but my friend who's planning on going can't seem to find out how/where to get them. TicketBastard is handling the REST of the tour, but she can't find anything about the Chicago show from them, nor apparently from the Riviera's site, nor Tool's site. (Apologies if I'm blatantly wrong about this - I'm going halfway from second-hand info.) Any clues are appreciated - reply off list; and I'll be glad to set up some B&P's for CD-Rs of this show as BWT, when/if I get ahold of it. cheers, da9ve

Brickwalling is an unrelated phenomenon. Brickwalling is indeed hitting the pre-amp with too high of a signal level, but the record level control and the meter comes *after* the pre-amp input. So lowering the levels you read on the meter doesn't avoid brickwalling. Sony's recommendation is just a very conservative way of avoiding hitting 0 dB. >=46air enough, but what if you no longer use the built-in preamp >or a/d? In my case I now run the mics into an MP-2 amp which >then goes into a SBM-1 which then feeds a digital signal to >the D8. From: L Sean Kennedy <liam@xo.com> Subject: Re: Problems posting to list from AOL Reply-To: Sean Kennedy <liam@fedney.tech.xo.com> Date: Fri, 04 May 2001 14:28:32 -0400 I believe the solution to "your message has MIME content, please send as plain text" for AOL is as follows. When you are done composing the message highlight the text and then right click with the mouse and select the "text" item, under that item select the option "normal." I do not have an AOL account and am paraphrasing information from a DAT-heads called Matt. I believe that it did work for one user with AOL 6.0 who wanted to sell an Apogee. Once I get a confirmation it will be added to the information provided at "dat-heads-help@datheads.phish.net" which gives advice for most other email clients. Please check that if you have this problem because it takes a lot of time to reply personally (which I eventually do on email to dat-heads-owner). Sean
From: "Richmond Mike" <keepongrowin@hotmail.com> Subject: Question: How works a sony D3? Date: Fri, 04 May 2001 14:28:36 -0400 Hello, Recently I aquired a D3 from a video production company for a good price. Noteable point; the deck only has been through about 100 hours of use. I'm pretty happy with it so far. Just wish parts were still available (knocking on wood). So my questions. I have a 7 pin cable but in the event I need to go analog... How do I use the line in/mic switch? Also, how do I use the mic att 20db/0db switch? Off the subject but still curious, What exactly does the ams control do? skip to the next ID? Is it good to use this function when skipping over the blank (lead) at the begining of the tape? 5. And finally the start ID mode and enter buttons what's the deal? So I've got a Long way to go. A newbie undeniably. But everyone starts somewhere, sometime. Any other info on maintenance or the # of a good mechanic would be greatly appreciated. Please send me a private email to respond. From: "Bill W." <cds@bilner.com> Subject: How old is too old with DATs? Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 14:31:42 -0800 Advice, please: A gentleman from this list is looking to sell some 1-2 years old KAO Gold 60m DAT blanks. He says they've been sitting in a desk drawer, sealed, at room temperature the whole time. He claims that "KAO Gold 60m DAT blanks were and still are the best blanks ever produced." We haven't talked price yet, but he encouraged me to seek feedback from fellow list members about how these "old" tapes would compare to "fresh" tapes in performance aside from the issue of price. Everyone else seems high on the Sony Thanks, Bill
