One MUST cut a wav on sector boundries or you will get a noticeable =
*CLICK* when the track changes- this is one of the reasons most people =
complain about flawed discs nowadays- track boundry problems-
AS far as musicians recording- it has NOTHING to do with delay or timeings =
or anything- just where the cut is performed in the track- do it on a =
sector boundry and things are all fine- cut a sector into pieces and you =
have audible problems-
my advice for anyone doing a transfer from DAT>CDR is to use CDwave- its =
free, its fun and dammit- it works- so use it-
I use SF5.0 for the recoding to the HD- but I have no clue how to =
reconfigure it to do the sector boundries- I have CDwave so I do not =
worry about it-

Fellow DATHeads,
I've got a Sony DG60P stuck on my D8. Below is a detailed description on
what happened, any help would be appreciated!
Ok, so I inserted it, the loading process went fine. The tape was at the
end (~ 1h56min), I hit rewind and the deck turned off and on like if the AC
power had failed for a brief moment (I actually had this problem in the
past with DG tapes, but the other times I was able to eject and remove the
tape). So this is where the problem begins, I can open the lid and remove
like half tape, but it doesn't go beyond that point. After a careful look
I can see the tape itself is still loaded on the heads, and that's what is
keeping the cartridge from getting out completely.
What would be the best approach to solve this problem? How difficult it
is to unscrew the lid and manually remove the tape? Thanks!

Or better yet, download the free, excellent program EAC (Exact Audio Copy)
to make the cue sheet AND burn the disc as well.

I have been using KLONE CDR's for quite some time and have been very pleased
with their performance. I have had a 100% burning success rate. The discs
are apparently rated at 150+ years data life. Also, they seem to be
extremely scratch resistant. I have probably burned around 500 Klone discs.

If the 4100 is similar to the 3800, (it sure looks similar!) you would hold down the "counter mode" and "counter reset" buttons and press and release the "pause" button, then release the "counter reset" button, and finally release the "counter mode" to get into the data mode. Once in the special mode, you use "counter mode" to page forward, and use the skip forward button to change the value of the currently displayed setting. You will probably have choices of IEC or AES digital modes (iec=spdif) and Coax, Optical, or XLR input- ususally coax and optical are used with iec, you might have to tell it to do that though. . .
This is all from memory, as I own a 3700, which has DIP switches on the back for that stuff. . . the 3800 has continuous margin display, head hours, output level adjustment, and some other cool things on the front that the 3700 lacks. . . the 4100 has Time Code capability, so most tapers won't have a need for that machine- good luck finding an answer. . . try searching the archives at http://www.oade.com if this doesn't help. . . they're panasonic dealers, and could probably tell you the answer if it's not in the taping section. . .
hope this helps!

I'd look at at Firewire interface such as the MOTU 828. Firewire is the
direction for audio as well as video. A little pricey, but then you can
afford a TiMac....and the 828 has a tremendous amount of flexibility.=20
There is also a tremendous stir in Mac audio circles about the Mobile
I/O from Metric Halo (http://www.mhlabs.com/mobileio/), even more
expensive, but it has its advantages. Since you are going to use a
Powerbook, you may want to also look into the Digigram VXPocket. Sonic
Solutions packages this with a Sony VIAO, but Mac users have had
excellent success with it as well.
As I suggested, the overall trend seems to be towards Firewire, USB is
useable, but less desirable.

Got my answer (thanks tom! copied below for future reference, for the next
time someone searches the dat-heads archives) within one hour of the digest
going out. Works perfectly. There are a number of "system level" options,
cryptically displayed, it is the first one "option 0" that is the selection of
the digital input.
God Bless Dat-Heads!
Thanks!

Caught and recorded the ModeReko show last night in Asheville. I have a great tape, made from dead center about 20feet back from the stage. The crowd was very light, only about 20 people. Too bad, it was a great show. If anyone would like to trade i'm open to whatever. The Modereko set only ran 1:14. I'm looking for any trey shows or allmans beacon run, or phil from his recent tour. I can throw in something else to make up the difference in set length. Do yourselves a favor, go see ModeReko.
SR77>DMIC20>M1 The sound is very good. The SR77's are great for small venues, but could use some boost from long range. In this small venue, with a huge PA, they sound great. Thanks-Kevin
ps-yeah!!! got my tickets for Phil and ABB today. I know that the Philzone.com says you don't need specific tapers seats. Can you tape from up front or just on the lawn? I've never tried to tape in this type of venue. I know that at lakewood in Atlanta they confine taping to the lawn. Any info would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the CK8 caps, but the CK68 shotgun caps only work
with the 460s. The 480s take the CK69 shotgun caps. The difference
is the CK68 caps have an extra pin - there's a fat cone-tipped one
off-center as well as the normal skinny center pin. If the CK8 caps
have this extra pin, then it's very likely they WON'T work with 480s.
You are correct in that the CK8 caps were designed for the 451 bodies,
but there was an adapter available to use them with the 460s.
If you borrow them, make sure you try them out beforehand. The symptom
I saw using CK68 caps on 480 bodies was extremely low signal levels
(at a show no less, doh!).

this has come up a bunch of times in the past but every couple weeks
somebody new asks about this i guess; so check the archives for more
info/opinions
my 2 cents - my understanding is that the silence between tracks is not
necessarily due to cutting up a wavefile not along sector boundaries
i think the "audible silence" will happen if you burn in Track-At-Once mode
rather than Disk-At-Once mode, regardless of how the tracks are splitup
(these are 2 seperate issues, each with similar audible symptoms)
if you use TAO mode, the software will put a gap/silence down between the
tracks
with TAO, even if you configure the "gaps" between tracks with your software
down to "0", there will always be a slight gap there of some fraction of a
second, whether you correctly split your wavfile into seperate tracks along
sector boundaries or not
that issue aside (TAO mode), if you do not split the wavefile up across
proper sector boundaries (multiples of 2352 bytes), you will get things like
clicks/pops or yes even silence the between tracks, in addition to the
silence/gaps that TAO will also record for you
btw, how do you hear "audible silence" anyway? just a joke about that
terminology :-)
>
>Save the whole thing as a big single .wav file and use CDWAVE to make a CUE
>file to burn with Fireburner, CDRWIN or Nero.
a cuesheet is definitely the way to go and you can write it with a text
editor if you want; it is much easier than splitting up a wavefile into
seperate files IMO and avoids all these issues with silence/gaps/pops/clicks
which seem to plague about 30% of the CD-Rs i get from people in trades
(sigh)
for those bewildered by all this, a cuesheet is just a "map" that tells the
software where the track mark should be, and looks as simple as this example
below (there are also many complicated things you can do with cuesheets that
i do not mess with, like encode CDTEXT information about the tracks, add
pre/post-gaps and other wierd things):
FILE c:\music\liverecording.wav WAVE
TRACK 01 AUDIO
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 AUDIO
INDEX 01 08:53:46
TRACK 03 AUDIO
INDEX 01 15:43:04
TRACK 04 AUDIO
INDEX 01 20:19:67
TRACK 05 AUDIO
INDEX 01 27:34:13
TRACK 06 AUDIO
INDEX 01 34:14:20
TRACK 07 AUDIO
INDEX 01 41:25:57
TRACK 08 AUDIO
INDEX 01 50:36:68
TRACK 09 AUDIO
INDEX 01 56:23:60
the first line in the cuesheet tells the software what/where the wavefile
is; the rest of the lines define each track # and where they go in
Minutes:Seconds:Frames (a frame is 1/75th of a second)
i find that CDRCUE is a useful program for writing cuesheets (i used to just
use a text editor like notepad but i like CDRCUEs ease of use and ability to
check the various track/cue points while i am writing the sheet)
CDRCUE can be found here (shareware for $19.95)
http://www.dcsoft.com/products.htm
programs that i use for burning which support cuesheets are EAC and CDRWIN,
you simply direct the program to load the cuesheet rather than a bunch of
seperate files (note: both of these programs can also work directly with the
seperate tracks and assemble them for you without gaps in DAO mode and do
not require you to use the cuesheet approach, and provided the seperate
tracks/files are split correctly along sector boundaries there should be no
silence/gaps/clicks/pops)
EAC can be found here (free - just send the author a postcard)
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/
CDRWIN can be found here (i think it only costs $39 now)
http://www.goldenhawk.com/
hope this helps...

understand the issues and what works for me...feel free to correct me if you
have better info etc*

Hi:
I'm going to a show (Rod Argent & Colin Blunstone) at the Village
Underground 130 west 3rd St. NY. Dates are 5-24 through 27 in case
anybody's interested. I've never been there and was wondering if
anybody's familiar with this venue and could give me the lay of the
land. Especially related to recording the gig ala stealth. All I could
get from a staff member was "It's a nice bar, seats about 300 & has a
great sound system."
My primary concern is the venues "attitude" toward tapers. I haven't a
clue. Will be going up from Phila. and really don't want any
unexpected hassles trying to get my rig in.
Good directions from the Holland Tunnel would be awesome too.
Thanks,
Tom
