I am looking for Rufus Wainwright on CDR or DAT. I taped him 5.19.01
CSBmod>D8, 10 ft. dead center on the floor: very nice tape. Available on
CDR or DAT. I have a handful of other things on CDR but I want more.

I've got more than enough blanks to last at least a few years
at the rate I'm going. So, I'd like to sell off a few boxes of
extras. These are Maxell OEM DDS. I have 10 packs of both
the 60's and 90s. All still shrinkwrapped. (These are all originally
from Cassette House, FWIW).
Asking $20 per box + shipping (Your choice of shipping, either
media mail or 1st class).
I haven't done an exhaustive search on current pricing, but I'm
willing to entertain counteroffers it that's too high.

You can certainly use a new CDR drive though maybe not at full
speed. I run mine at 4X on an older computer.
If the motherboard only has one IDE slot, this allows a max of 2
drives which might be a limitation.
Also, older BIOS can only support 8GB on a HD. You are right, a
Promise card would get around both these problems.
But, with a new high-speed motherboard going for only around
$100, you might want to replace the MB too. Only problem is
finding an "AT" type. The newer "ATX" motherboards will have a
different physical configuration, and a different connector for the
power supply.
It certainly is possible to get an "AT" motherboard with a faster new
chip, but you should look in computer mags for those companies
that specialize in motherboards (don't expect to find it at
CompUSA or Frys...)

Hi,
My Fostex D5 is giving me a hard time so I'm searching for a repair
facility in the N.E.Florida/S.E. region of the US.
It's still under warranty and I have this extended thru Terrapin tapes
warranty extension program. Last time I sent it out to a factory they ( the
warranty company, Warrentec or something) found. This time they are leaving
it up to me to get them a "estimate of repair" from someone I find,..
interesting.
Would anyone have some ideas. yellow pages in my area of Jacksonville, FL
doesn't really turn up much.

Older Pentiums can generally support hard drives on any size. It it is real
old, you may have to use a translation program (which usually comes with the
new hard drive) to access all of the available space. The alternative (and
a MUCH better choose) is the use a "Promise" or other card in place of the
motherboard bios for the hard drive.
Regarding the burner, it is best to follow the recommendations of the
manufacturer regarding the minimum speed. If you have less than the
recommended speed, the problem which MAY occur is that the CPU can not
transfer data fast enough to keep up with the burner. In which case, the CD
you just made is junk. I just installed a new CenDyne 6X burner bought an
sale ($89) and it required a 166 MHz CPU. Check eBay, there are all kinds
of older, slower computers that will fill your needs. I'd recommend the
fastest CPU you can afford - it sure helps when editing. Also, buy a lots
or RAM. For audio use, I'd look for at least 100 meg. Newer motherboards
take modern ram which is cheap compared to older EDO, etc. You don't have
to have a late model of operating system. Windows 95B or later is Ok, WIN
98 is better - although others on the list may stronger opinions on this
topic.
Check and see if your older machine might be able to support a faster CPU.
If so, that could help lessen the drain on the pocketbook.

I just upgraded my computer so I had to re-install SoundForge. I forgot
the settings to set it up to do DATs. I know one of them was for the
timing, like minutes and seconds to hours and minutes (or something like
that). And also, I just tried recording something and it came out quiet,
lower volume than the DAT. Is there some setting to fix this? Thanks in
advance

Curious as to BTS's official stance regarding taping. I have heard SBD
shows and was wondering if SBD access is usually available. If not will it
be ok to bring a rig in, or will it be a stealth mission. Pretty sure BTS
allowed taping in the past, but wasn't sure about the upcoming tour
supporting their new album. Thanks for the help.

I have been a happy user of DAT for recording concerts
(started 1996). Now short (60m) dats are getting
progressively rare as computer drives accept longer
tapes, and I am left wondering whether I should shift
to recording directly to hard disk, and if so what
setup to use?
If others have travelled that path ahead of me I want
to hear your experiences. Please e-mail me privately.
Can post a summary if people want.

I'm thinking of getting a minidisc recorder as a sort of second-line
machine (I know the audio isn't up to Dat standards!)
Does anyone have a specific portable they'd recommend. I understand there
are one or two new models with digital out. I'd also need the 20db cut
input setting and the ability to alter the record volume without stopping
the disc.
Any thoughts appreciated!

Subject: DIY project for simple portable HD recorder?
Date: 21 May 2001 14:44:08 +0100
Hello,
I noticed that 2.5" hard drives are quite cheap. A simple and small recorder
(ADC + microcontroller + drive) should be feasable.
Does anyone here know about HD recorders that are as small as a, say, Sony D7
or even a D100/M1?
Does anyone know about some kind of do it yourself HD recorder?
I am no electronics guru but *if* a set of 2 or 3 (?) AA batteries can power
the drive and CPU for 3+ hours a simple solution is not far away given some
knowledge. (find a nice, simple and cheap CPU that can interface with the
drive, some controls (level, start/stop)...)
What do you all think/know about this?
Please post.
Groeten,
Udo

Looks like I'm in the market for a new pair of mics, and I'm interested in
the possibility of purchasing some 4v caps and the actives. I've already
