Subject: DAT -> CD s'ware / sound card suggestions.
Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 08:27:38 +0100
Hello all,
I am currently in the process of finding a suitable digital sound card to
transfer my portable DAT material (SONY TCD-D3) to the HD of the PC then
intimately burn a few CD's on my Yamaha CD-RW.
After conducting some research, I think I'll be purchasing a sound card
purely for this digital data transfer and keep my existing sound card
(Soundblaster 16) for the other PC requirements.
A product that seemed to get good reviews on some of the sites I visited was
the Digital Audio Labs CardD Digital sound card.
Has anybody used this and do they work well?
I have a PII 233MHz PC, with about 2Gigs free on the HD and 98M of memory.
I only want to transfer the material, maybe make a few edits, then burn a CD
and delete the images from the HD.
Can anyone also suggest s'ware for making edits to the sound file?...Sound
Forge / Cool edit? These are satisfactory right?
I am new to the DAT scene, but regularly attend live concerts / small
private gatherings in the UK and would like to record this material for my
own personal collection.
Any views / recommendations would be extremely useful!!
Rgds
Manesh

The 416 is a shotgun mic typically used for speech dialog pickup on movie
sets, etc. It is one of the most widely respected mics for its purpose.
They have a built-in presence rise to help dialog intelligibility. They are
probably not the concert recording mic of choice as they would exhibit
spotty pickup at a distance and the possibility of comb filtering due to the
design of the interference tube would make an odd sounding stereo recording
at best. For some basic info, see:

Correct, mostly. The electronics themselves aren't THAT expensive
(probably on the order of a few hundred dollars).
>Does anyone here know about HD recorders that are as small as a, say,
>Sony D7 or even a D100/M1? Does anyone know about some kind of do it
> yourself HD recorder?
I've considered developing some firmware and then doing a board layout
(possibly with an FPGA or ASIC to decrease board utilization and power
consumption), but gave it up due to current constraints.
>I am no electronics guru but *if* a set of 2 or 3 (?) AA batteries can
>power the drive and CPU for 3+ hours a simple solution is not far away
>given some knowledge. (find a nice, simple and cheap CPU that can
> interface with the drive, some controls (level, start/stop)...)
Very few laptop drives are 3.3V capable. Most of them need a 5V rail.
This means you need at least 6V of supply (4 AA batteries). The ones that
ARE 3.3V pull about 393mA. That means you're looking at a bare minimum
1200mA-Hour battery supply. IIRC, most rechargables are in that range.
However, that's just power to run the drive for 3 hours. (The 5V drives
typically pull about 420mA when active.)
What about the associated electronics? 64MB of RAM falls in ~100mA.
Assume another 100mA for your electronics and a minimal LCD.
Suddenly, for a 3 hour show, you're needing 1600mAH of battery capacity at
3.3V (which is still 3 AA batteries).
That doesn't include an analog stage. Ouch.
Now, note that these are worst-case estimates, but I'd hate to walk into a
show and have my batteries die with 5 minutes left in the set.
I am still thinking about a design for this. Features include:
* 24/96 capability
* High performance ADCs
* S/PDIF in/out
among other things, which I'm not willing to post (in case I do decide to
build one of these).
Time frame for the design and layout/etc would probably be about a year,
though.
There are a lot of knowledgeable people here, though. Perhaps we could
make it a group project. :) I doubt, however, it could be DIY. Most
low power processors and components are surface-mount, or (even worse)
BGA. You can't just slap them into a Radio Shack breadboard anymore.

Hello all,
I'm not quite sure why I have an extra copy of this show on DAT, but I would
like to trade it for something. First person to send a link to their list
that has something I would like to obtain gets it.
The show was from the Electric Factory in Philadelphia on 12/2/2000. I
recorded it myself with the following rig: 3 Nakamichi CM-300's
(cp4/cp1/cp4) > Nak. MX-100 3 mic. mixer > D8.
The show is on one 60m and one 90m Sony DDS tapes.
Here is the setlist:
Set 1: Victim Or The Crime, KC Moan, Artificial Flowers, The Winners, Friend
Of The Devil, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Wang Dang Doodle, Jack Straw >
Birdsong > Dark Star > Odessa
Set 2: Other One Jam > Spanish Jam > Other One > Playin' In The Band >
October Queen > The Deep End > Even So > Estimated Prophet > The Wheel >

Alright Folks...
Since I have read here in the past couple of months
that DATs are going away ( 3rd time in as many years )
why are there not blow out sales? I have read that the
manufacturer's have raised their prices to the
vendors( hence us consumers) but I would figure that
if DATs are dead every manufacture would want to get
them off the shelf. I have been waiting to buy a
couple more portable decks for venues around me that
are willing to tape shows when I cannot be there, but
I am not paying more for something going out of
style...
Any comments vendors ????????
Peace, Michael

I'm thinking of getting a minidisc recorder as a sort of second-line
machine (I know the audio isn't up to Dat standards!)
Does anyone have a specific portable they'd recommend. I understand there
are one or two new models with digital out. I'd also need the 20db cut
input setting and the ability to alter the record volume without stopping
the disc.
Any thoughts appreciated!

>>
Many DATheads use or are considering the MiniDISC as a backup recording
deck.
I suggest avoiding ALL portable Sony Minidisc decks as they lock out
real-time manual REC level adjustments and recent Sony MD models give even
less indication if the MD deck mic input is setup to easily overload.
Consider ANY SHARP portable minidisc as excellent for having all the needed
features for live recording level controls. A few AIWA MD decks are also
very good with having these exact same needed recording features. I have
stock on two Sharp MD models; MD-MT20 & SR60 run off NiMH or regular AA
akaline cells.
Setting mic input sensitivity on MD decks is a bit different than with DAT.
Sonic Studios Web site has a recording TIPS page and all the needed
information on getting consistant results with DAT and minidisc decks with
mics without risking getting input overload distortion.

i apologize for the long delay between trees but my father was in and out of
the hospital the past couple of weeks.thankfully he seems to be doing fine
now so lets get things going again. from here on in we will start treeing
two shows at a time. so remember if you are signing up to be a branch you
must be able to burn the two shows, between 3-5 sets ( 4-6 discs each) and
able to burn up to 80 mins. for your leaves. also as a branch it is your
responsibilty to contact your leaves. if for some reason you cannot reach
them you are required to drop us a line stating so. as a leaf you are
required to offer a trade to your branches for the shows...even if analogue.
only if your branch sees nothing of intrest are they obligated to accept a

keep up the flow with timely responses.
next up are two real good recordings...boston 8/4/99 sonic

end 6/1/01 for this double tree.
lastly, as you might have heard david gilmour will be playing a benefit

if you are planing to attend this fantastic show please drop us a line. we
hope that some of our european friends can help us out this time around.

enjoy the music!
