Adam ------------------------------ From: Richard Hammond Subject: FM in House Recording (ALD/ALS systems) Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 23:31:31 -0500 Saw the topic brought up in the last digest, figured I'd pry a little more knowledge out of those in the know. There are two systems (FM and IR) that can be used, it seems from my limited experience that most venues (for concerts) use FM, while some movie houses and churches use IR systems. If a place uses the FM system, there are several "channels" they can use: A-72.1 MHz, B-72.3 MHz, C-72.5 MHz, D-72.7 MHz, E-72.9 MHz, F-75.5 MHz, G-75.7 MHz, H-75.9 MHz, I-74.7 MHz, J-75.3 MHz There are also "wideband" and "narrow" band systems... seems very confusing to me. Anyway... from my looking around you can buy these things (they are almost as much as my M1 was) but how do you know what one your going to need? Do you need "wideband" or "narrow" and within those what "channels". The systms seem to offer either one fixed channel or for a higher cost you can get a switchable system for 2, 4, or 6 channels (but the price goes up real quick). I would think building a little receiver that could be tuned to these frequencies would be a fairly simple thing.. but then again I'm not an electrical type. Anyone have an idea on where/what to get, or if it would be possible to build one that's "tune able" to all/some of the channels? ------------------------------ From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: need a taper in Chicago Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 21:58:44 -0700 I'm looking for a taper in Chicago to tape something off of WXRT-FM for me. Specifically, WXRT is broadcasting the Cowboy Junkies' recent promo performance. The broadcast is Wednesday, 22 May 2001, at 8pm Central. I'm a unidecker, so I can't offer up any DATs to trade, but I have an extensive CD-R list. Alternately, I'd be more than happy to do a B&P or 2:1. And remember, the Cowboy Junkies are a taper-friendly band! Candace Horgan is coordinating the efforts to tape all of the shows on their upcoming tour, and a quick search through the archives will give you her email address for more info. IIRC, tapers can get a pair of guest passes to the show. Tour info is always available at: http://www.cowboyjunkies.com/exclusives/tourdates/index.html And if anyone wants to trade Cowboy Junkies material, my complete list is at: http://www.mindspring.com/~mielke/Nadyne/ But again, I'm a unidecker, so you'll have to ignore the DAT list right now. :( Thanks in advance, y'all. :) /nm ------------------------------ From: Chinascats@aol.com Subject: ISO a few shows Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 03:04:08 EDT I am looking to complete the spring tour for the Cheese. Thanks bob ------------------------------ From: Adam Pease Subject: Re: Recording transfers? Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 07:34:07 -0700 Matthew, You'll need a sound card for your PC and a cable to take the digital out from your DAT to the sound card. I use a SoundBlaster Live card which has coaxial SPDIF input and a cable from CoreSounds that takes the 7 pin output from my Sony TCD-D8. The merits (or demerits) of the SoundBlaster have been discussed previously on this list. It resamples digital input so it's not a true bit-for-bit copy. On the other hand, I suspect only the most sensitive ears under controlled conditions could tell the difference. You don't mention what equipment you have but I hope this is helpful just the same. They are for Town Park camping, which is now sold out, and he is asking what he paid, $205, for each set. The tickets are four day passes to the festival. They allow taping now, as of last year. Also, if any dat-heads are going and want to hook up in the "taper's section" (by the soundboard), drop me an email. I'll be heading out there with two taper buddies, and it should be an awesome festival. we'll probably arrive Monday night or Tuesday morning. I have a couple of radio shack batteries (the flat ones that were designed for powering CD players), but they don't last the advertised 40 hours with my M1, especially in the cold, so I would like to buy or build something that will last longer. I did a web-search and found a lot of DIY guides for battery sleds for D7/8's, but only one for an M1. If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know. If I get any I will post a summary to dat-heads. The one I did find is located at: http://members.tripod.com/~groovin/battery.html I have not yet tested it, but it promises ~15 hours for an M1/D100. (Digest #900, Volume #5) Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 13:00:36 -0400 Some venues offer ALD's (Assisted Listening Devices) for the hearing impaired. I believe they are soundboard feeds broadcast at a low frequency FM signal. The venue will usually have some type of FM receiver set to the proper frequency. People then plug a DAT recorder into the headphone jack to get their recording. I would imagine it wouldn't sound too bad, but I've definitely heard their quality questioned numerous times. -Bryan ------------------------------ From: Warren Melnick Subject: RE: FM in House Recording (ALD/ALS systems) Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 13:17:56 -0400 More likely, if you are going to try to do this, you should just contact the venue ahead of time stating that you are calling for a friend who is hard of hearing and asking if (and what) they have for hearing assistance. Then you can just use their own equipment and jack into the output, or perhaps even arrange to get or borrow equivilent equipment.
