The good: -media is *cheap*, beats the hell out of my nomad. -you can do cool stuff with splitting/naming/reordering tracks -the mt-77 has level control and works with my CSB's (sony didn't at the time I was shopping) -it's *tiny* -battery life is incredible! off the top of my head I'd say it's like 15+ hrs play and ~6hrs record per AA battery! -has mdlp, which I absolutely wouldn't do without. This allows you to put 3 cd's and most live shows on a single disc. -sounds much better than people would have you believe. I can't stand mp3, especially on headphones, even at 256+ kbs, but I have no problems whatsoever with mdlp. -level display The bad: -no backlight. This is a *major* pain if you're recording in a dark venue. -no digi-out, and I couldn't find a single portable model that did when I was shopping (3 months ago). -the buttons are tiny, definitely not made for the fingers of a 6'4" man. Maybe better for your average 5'8" Japanese consumer. Overall, I do my serious recording with a Sony M1 dat deck. I do other recording with the md/CSB's. Mostly though, I use the md as a walkman. And in this role it beats the pants off of everything else out there (believe me, I'm a sucker, I've bought it all ;) Finally, the place to shop supplies is http://www.minidisco.com/, they're great. Though I actually bought the unit from http://www.intl-connection.com/, who had a great price and good service. Enjoy md, it's a great complement to dat! -Jackson - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "He was medicine. One common answer was that I needed to manually install some drivers... Anyone know just how to do that? To all who responded, I'll summarize what I found out when we get to the end of this grueling process... Thanks for the bandwidth, carl "the guy with a big pile of DAT's and a big pile of blank CD-R's" ------------------------------ From: Charles David Subject: Question...DAT>CD transfer w/ Tascam 700 Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 01:12:43 -0400 (EDT) I've been doing transfers from a Sony R500 DAT deck to a Tascam 700 with a coax cable....works fine except for 1 problem. When the DAT is ID'ed, the tracks automatically change on the 700. I might've expected it in "direct digital" mode, but it happens in the regular (manual track changing) mode as well. Is there any method for doing a transfer with the Tascam that would ignore DAT placed ID's? (within recording between the R500 & Tascam 700...I can't afford to upgrade my soundcard to do this stuff on the computer). ======= There's an ID'ed Radiators DAT I'm trying to put to CD where someone was ID happy..sometimes changing the track number on the DAT up to 3 times during tuning between songs. ------------------------------ From: Charles David Subject: Re: Question...DAT>CD transfer w/ Tascam 700 Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 01:37:56 -0400 (EDT) Nevermind...I just figured it out.
