Of course, the "Scheps in hat" rigs are nice, but then you have a lot more parts to deal with, and, you have to keep your head still and your hat precisely aligned with the sound source. Not that it can't be done, just that I couldn't do it. -G ------------------------------ From: Jmratman@aol.com Subject: extra MOE. Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 16:11:32 EDT I've an extra MOE. 4/21/01 Worcester, MA from The Pallidium on 2 80min CD's for the taking. Neumann KM 140>LunatecV2>Apogee AD1000>Tascam Dap1 right in front of the board. I'd need either 2 blank CD's(not a CDRW) (something decent Kodak/Memorex/TDK) or a sealed, branded non-Maxell DAT plus postage would be fine. Whatever you have on hand. Jim Ratner ------------------------------ From: Jeff Tom Subject: sound cards for the mac Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 13:19:16 -0700 (PDT) i have the egosys waveterminal 2496 pci card in my g4 and i like it very much. i have not used the midiman delta dio 2496 or the audiophile 2496. one difference is that the delta dio has optical i/o and the egosys card does not. the major difference that sold me on the egosys card is the ability to do real-time resampling where the card could convert my digital input at 32K or 48K to 44K in real time while i record to the g4 using peak 2.5 software and then burn cds using jam. this saves some time from doing software resampling. the card has coaxial and analog i/o. comes only with a driver and no recording software. card works with peak, cubase, logic software and others. (can't use the freebie protools since you need the audiomedia card). there are two versions of the card. one works with windows 95/98 only and the other works with both mac os and windows 95/98. the mac version costs a little more than the pc version (sigh). for those of you that have imacs (or cubes), there is a usb interface version called the waveterminal U2A that has the same features plus optical i/o. i got my card from bayview pro audio for $335 last year which had the best price at that time. jeff __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 00:53:17 +0200 James B. Wilkinson in #908: >>....will any of these DAT recorders let you send the analog into its analog inputs and get the digital out of the SPDIF outputs without actually running a tape through the machine at the same time.<< I'm unsure of the story with other brands, but many of the Sony models will do just that, and you can do it with the machine empty - no need to have a pauzed work-tape inserted. With my 59ES home deck, in analog input mode, punching "record" gives a panel display "AD-DA", and outputs both 48 kHz S/PDIF and analog pass-through (AD-DA'd of course). With a digital input, punching "record" displays "-DA" and you get analog out. I've run the machine for a few hundred hours in this fashion as a standalone AD or DA converter, with no mechanical ill effects. I hear no whirring noises, but can't really discount there being some bits of the drive train continually spinning around inside the unit? No head wear, though. This can be a useful second career for a DAT recorder. Don't discard those old machines with ailing drive mechanisms. Mix your metaphors and milk the ol' workhorses for extra mileage . Tom ------------------------------ From: Stuart Gerber Subject: Coax output not working (da30mk2) Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 19:07:17 -0400 I am trying to make some contact with tascam on this issue BUT i just got this in the mail today and as i was playing around and testing it out .. spdif IN works fine on the deck BUT SPDIF OUT is not working at all. I have tried power cycling the deck .. nothing works. My computer does not pick up a signal from the Coax NOR does my D8 pick up the signal (using Active Oade ..switch is set to digital) i get No signal msg from the D8 Has anyone else seen a problem such as this before? Or am i already forced to send this to repairs? thanks, stuart ------------------------------ From: "Michael Bogdan" Subject: FS: 2 Trey Tix for July 29 @ PNC Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 19:38:56 -0400 Hey guys... I found a couple of US suppliers listed on the Zoltrix web page, and one of them says they can supply the cards, but not yet. I'll include their reply to my inquiry below. The other supplier says that they carry other Zoltrix products, but not the Nightingale. At 8:24 PM -0400 5/28/2001, Paul E. Coax In works just fine but coax out does not seem to work at all. I have tried attaching it to my sony D8 and my Computer and neither one will pick up the digital signal. My RCA analog out works, but that is not even on the same PCB. I opened up the deck and noticed that both input and output jacks are part of the same Piece soldered to the board. Tascam informed me its 6 dollars for that piece plus Labor, but the PCB replacement would cost me over 400 dollars. That is more than i paid for this deck and was told nothing of this problem if it ever existed. This deck is barely 3 years old w/ approx 50- 100 hrs thanks, stuart gerber ------------------------------ From: Stuart Gerber Subject: one last time. da30mk2 prob Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 21:15:47 -0400 Well i have stated this a few times, but i just ran a 3rd test on the da30mk2s coax out .. I plugged it into my roommate's Phillips Standalone 2nd generation consumer CDR. Works fine. Gets the signal.. Now why in the heck would the consumer burner pick up the signal but neither my D8 w/ active oade nor my CMI8738 digi card will pick up the signal. Anyone seen this odd problem. Feel stupid that i have gone through all the trouble to talk to tascam parts dept and hear the dreaded price of a PCB replacement. Do you have the 8738 card set to look for COAX voltages and not for optical voltages? With my Zoltrix card, there was a setting for voltage levels (.5 vs 5 I think). Be sure you have the right one.
