Just tape right over them, the ID's will be erased along with the
program material. I believe ID's are stored on a small section of the
DAT tape which records linearly, right along side the diagonally-striped
digital audio portion. When you record the digital audio signal, the
start and skip ID's as well as end marks are recorded on the separate
part of the tape, so they're like accounting features, and don't change
the audio data.
One thing to watch out for when taping over things, is to make certain
that your absolute time is recorded, that's the actual time from the
start of the DAT. If you don't record absolute time, it's tricky to
find your way around the tape. When you record on a brand-new tape, be
sure to record from the very top, otherwise ABS time may not get
recorded. If you want to tape over a DAT without ABS time, just rewind
it all the way and record from the beginning, and ABS will be recorded
over the old material.
also, please leave between 30 seconds and 2 minutes of blank space at
the start of each tape you master. If a DAT has a mis-load, the first
minute or so might be mangled, so it's best to start the program after
that area. I also like to leave a minute or two at the end of the tape,
for the same reason.
best of luck!
(ps- when taping over old tapes, it might be a good idea to 'pack' them
first by fast forwarding to the end, then rewinding. Some people do
this for new tapes, I don't usually open the plastic before I'm in the
spot and ready to roll, and I don't usually want to run my deck just to
excercise the tape. . .)

It's 2352 bytes. I use a little program called CDWAV for splitting the
tracks, which does it automatically at 2352 byte boundaries. It's
shareware, and I can send it to you if you want.

Hi Everyone,
Since posting the last contest announcement, I've received a couple emails
from people who have said that they would rather not see these postings on
the list. Since we don't want to be considered spammers, you will no longer
be seeing the contest announcements on the DAT-Heads list.
If you *are* interested in the contests, please send an email to
editor@thenightowl.com (or just reply privately to this email) and ask to
be put on our mailing list. Otherwise, bookmark our site and check back
periodically. The masses (so to speak) have spoken and there will be no
more contest emails sent to the list.
Thanks to everyone who's entered in the past & I hope you'll continue to do
so in the future. Sorry for any inconvenience that all this may have caused.
As a sign of good faith, I'll offer B&P copies of David Bowie - 10-4-97 on
2 CDRs (audio only) to the first 5 people to respond.

>expensive mics (spending the same amount of money either way)?...
Despite the wealth of ignorance I possess in addition to my slightly less
than golden 45 year old
ears (veterans of countless shows), I'm in a position to comment on this. I
started doing
audience recordings last June and began with a Sharp MT821 MD. It has the
latest generation of 24 bit
ATRAC and the compression scheme is remarkably good in terms of audible
performance. My mic's are
Sound Professionals "Premium Slimline" - based on the Audio Technica AT853
capsule. I have changeable
heads but use the hypercardioids almost exclusively. I also use a Sound Pro
battery box, use the line input exclusively
and leave bass rolloff set at 69hz for nearly all shows that I record. Due
to dissatisfaction with recording length limitations,
the need for a level indicator that is backlit and the willingness to spend
$$ for some increase in resolution or recording quality,
I took the plunge and bought a Sony M-1 DAT recorder two months ago along
with an SBM-1 A-D convertor.
On a few occasions I was able to get a patch from a friend who uses a basic
Oade preamp and a very nicely matched pair
of Earthworks SR-77 cardioid mikes. He positions mic's using XY config - my
AT853's are generally spread apart by 20"
pointed at the stacks or in stealth situations either on the sides of my
head in a hat or on the inside edge of a shirt collar, adjacent to my neck.
Thus, I have recorded with both DAT and MD (different shows, I admit) and
also with dramatically different price levels of microphone.
I can offer the following observations:
1) location in the venue remains the most significant factor in getting good
results.
2) there does appear (to my ears) to be a very small edge for resolution of
detail in DAT.
3) better quality microphones make a noticeable difference.
I've heard material recorded with the $80 variety "binaurals" (omnipolar)
that CSB and Sound Professionals sell.
They sometimes sound much better than one would expect with mic's that cheap
but when I compare any of those
recordings to the ones I've made with the AT853's (which run $200-230 per
pair) the cheaper mic's often have a bit of muddiness
and a lack of fine definition, particularly on the trabsients like drums and
cymbals and the low end (i..e. well defined bass).
When I compare my AT853 recordings to those recorded with the Earthworks
SR-77's (about $700-800 per pair?) I notice a similar
difference - once again the transients become even better defined, the bass
notes tighten up and the vocals (in some cases) are slightly more
natural sounding. So many variables come into play - what is the house
sound system like, who's mixing etc. These variables aside, I can
safely say (IMHO) that DAT is still the way to go and you should buy the
best mic's you can afford. MiniDisc blanks run $2 per 74 minutes
and you'll need a minimum of 2 per show. Data grade DAT's (widely used
despite some continuing controversy) and currently $2.19 to $2.25 each
in any lenght - one, two or three hour. In addition to cheaper media cost,
if you're determined to stay in the digital domain (as most of us are),
you must buy a home MD deck in order to get digital output for doing
transfers. None of the portable MD recorders on the market have digital
output. All told, it's not that much cheaper to start with MD and DAT has
many advantages. I still use MD as a great and convenient portable
playback system but my recording is done strictly with DAT.

Hey,
Let me tell ya'll what I"m running and maybe you can help me get
my dats x-fered. One of my friends just left the country for a few
months so he left me his Denon DTR-2000 deck, his Za2 and a copy of Cool
edit 2000. Now I have everything hooked up, and I have the card
installed (I'm running windows 2000). When I go into Cool edit I go and
edit the settings and under devices I select the za2 wave out and the
za2 wav in. Then I open a new file and click record, and nothing
happens. The Za2 control panel is green, I have it set for the coax
input which is what I'm using. I also have the breakout cables
installed and I can hear the dat via the analog outs on my speakers.
Are there other settings that I need to change? Help me please, I'm at
my wits end.
Ciao,
Mac

That is most likely a digital input (TTL) for a CD-ROM. And it won't help
you "defeat" the internal clock, you're stuck with that.

Check your CD-ROM(s), not all of them have it but many do. It may be
labeled digital I/O or it may not be labeled at all. It's purpose is to=
avoid
the analog connector that most cdrom's use for playback of digital audio.
Unless you use your cd-rom as a cd player on a regular basis I don't think
it will be of much good to you, much less worth the effort of hooking it=
up.
If you want non-resampled output configure the zoltrix as the default
playback device and use its optical out.

I have a pair of unused 1 meter audio magic excalibur II xlr>rca cables for
sale, Mint condition of course. I got these to run from my sound devices mp-2
into my modified sbm-1, and then turned around and got an apogee the day
after the cables arrived. The cables sell for 239 a pair, the rca ends are
locking. These are imho the best analog cables you can buy. I'd like 175 for
the pair. I also have an unused ecocharge sigma plus battery system. This
includes the dual xlr output bp-50 battery with case, the sc61 smartcharger
with carrying case, and two xlr>d/c plug power cables, to run into
d8/m1/d100/md/sbm1 among other machines. Paid 179 a month ago, I'd like to
get 150 for the battery system. Please email me at blackpete@aol.com if
interested. Thanks, Marc.
