Since it didn't sell, I'll knock the price down to $50 + shipping. See details below. Bob (Previous post from 5/16/01) This is a nice digital I/O card for PCs. It has S/PDIF and AES/EBU optical and coax I/O + coax analog out. It's an ISA card, and so it won''t be usable in a system with a PCI-only motherboard. This card is out of production, but many pages with specs can be found through any of the standard search engines. See one of those for specs or write to me. Here's a couple of semi-useful hits: http://perso.cybercable.fr/vbs/eng/machines/prodf24.htm http://www.mooremusic.com.au/sekd/prodif.htm I still have the original box and whatever documentation (minimal if I recall) came with it + a copy of Samplitude Basic on floppy. The card is in excellent condition and certainly guaranteed to not be DOA. *Note: This card does NOT work with Win 2000. I've used it with Win 95 and Win 98. I'd like to get $75 for it, but will entertain counteroffers. (If you're not interested but think this is too much, please spare us all a public post telling me what a raw deal you think this is, etc. etc., blah blah woof woof). ------------------------------ From: Scott.C.Brown@Dartmouth.EDU (Scott C. Tour dates are listed below. Taping of any kind - audio, video etc. - is encouraged. Sbd patches are venue and time dependent, please be polite - but my recommendation would be to avoid the sbd anyways and set mics up either on-stage or foot of stage. I will be taping the shows marked with a *, feel free to ask for a patch. For the other shows I can offer guest list+1 to one taper, email me off-list at steve@mermen.net with a description of your rig if you're interested. If you have any problems getting gear in ask for myself (starred dates) or Randy Teaford (the sound guy) and we'll get you squared away. I'd appreciate a copy of anything you get for the band's archives, thanks. And be sure and check the website, www.mermen.net, for tour updates or merch (a bunch of their back catalog has just been re-released). I'd also like to stay away from having to use a preamp or anything too fancy, just straight into my D8. Should I blow the cash I have, it's not a lot!, for a stereo mic or on one better mono mic? I've got my eyes on the sony MS907 (this is stereo and could plug straight into the sony d8 which seems convenient), and am looking up to akg c1000s. An insightful post offered by the gentleman w/the AT853's > minidisk who upgraded to DAT and did some patching into his friends Earthworks > oade rig. Location was stressed as the #1 factor in a good recording. I can't agree more. #2 for me would be mics. IMO, the recording device is the least important piece of the puzzle and would be my last concern. Different technologies will sound different, ie: 48k PCM, 44.1 ATRAC, MP3..or whatever. If you were to use a poor sounding mic and then ran that into a DAT deck and an MD deck, you'd get a crappy recording on both. I believe the same goes in the direction of higher quality as well. I don't know at what point major resolution is lost due to MD's ATRAC compression. You may notice much more of a difference between the two if you were running $5k worth of mics, preamp and A/D ahead of them though. My point is that a modest pair of mics and other outboard gear may not produce the quality of recording that MD's compression will competley trash. I'm sure an A/B comparrison from some monster rig running into both MD and DAT would produce more readily noticable differences. As for the MD vs DAT thing, they both have their advantages. MD has: price, reusable CD-RW type media (that was neglected in the comparison of media price), size (much smaller than a pcm-m1) and they're maintenance free. Against it: 81 min max record time, ATRAC compression (though it's really good, it's still compressed. Comparable to an MP3 encoded at 256 or 320K. Make your own comparison there. It's up to individual ears). MD will skip while recording in situations where a DAT will not. DAT has: recording time, quality. Against it: price, maintenance issues I used to run both DAT and MD from my MBHO > Inbox (inbox has toslink and coax out) at the same time to do comparisons with later. It's hard to tell, but DAT does sound better. MD is a great backup rig if quality is your main concern. I've patched some of my DAT recordings w/the MD that was running on the side. MD has it's place. If your mainly a stealth taper, it's superb. The disc flip is a hassle, but is it a hassle worth spending 2-3x what you paid for your shiny new MD deck? That is a personal issue I suppose. I try not to tell folks what *I* think they should be useing. I can only say what worked for me. -- *** www.nickspicks.com *** ------------------------------ From: William.Otten@LibertyMutual.com Subject: Sound Editing Question Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 10:04:34 -0400 I have a "SBD" recording in which the bass is considerably louder than everything else on the tape. All other instruments and vocals seem present, but the bass is way too out front. Is there a software program out there, that is relatively easy to use and that could manipulate the sound so that the bass could be reduced and everything else could be brought up in the mix. I imagine it could be done going through an analog eq, but I'd much rather not introduce the analog gen if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. One of my friends just left the country for a few months so he left me his Denon DTR-2000 deck, his Za2 and a copy of Cool edit 2000. Now I have everything hooked up, and I have the card installed (I'm running windows 2000). When I go into Cool edit I go and edit the settings and under devices I select the za2 wave out and the za2 wav in. Then I open a new file and click record, and nothing happens. The Za2 control panel is green, I have it set for the coax input which is what I'm using. I also have the breakout cables installed and I can hear the dat via the analog outs on my speakers. Are there other settings that I need to change? Help me please, I'm at my wits end.
