Reply-To: Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 10:05:33 -0500 Hey - I've "volunteered" to tape a chamber music recital Friday evening for my daughters' amateur orchestra group. A local music store has offered us a pair of Shure SM81s (along with stands, cables and a pre-amp/mixer) for the project. I'll be recording into one of my home dat decks. There will be a couple of selections by the "large" ensemble (22 players, predominantly violins, with a few cellos and violas), and 10 or 12 duets, quartets, etc. The recital hall is fairly small (the whole group takes up about half the room). It is also fairly "live". Any advice, tips, suggestions on mic placement to best record with the equipment we've been offered in this situation will be greatly appreciated ---- Thanks - Tom ------------------------------ From: "Jim Andrisani" Subject: DAT trading in Boston/Uncle Sammy Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 11:56:38 -0400 Hey DAT-Heads, I'm looking for some people to do some local trading. I live in Boston and have about 400 shows on DAT..mostly Phish, lots of SCI, Biscuits, MMW, etc. I also have CD-R capabilities but have been unable to put my DATs onto CD due to a pissy computer. I've got a few Uncle Sammy shows on DAT that need to get transfered to CD-R for the band. If anyone wants to do some cloning, e-mail me and we can work something out. I don't have a list ready since I haven't done any DAT trading in years but I have taped a lot of local shows (Middle East, Somerville Theater, etc.) Boston area people should definately go check out Uncle Sammy (tonight @ Harpers Ferry in Allston). These guys are quite possibly the freshest new "jamband" on the rise. They're young and have incredible amounts of talent and energy. Definately a sick band to check out and they're extrememly taper-friendly (board access is always available). Check them out at www.unclesammy.com for some audio downloads and further info and if anyone makes it to the show, stop by the merch area and say hello. I'm their merchandise guy and tape them quite a bit. Thanks! Jim Andrisani Grassroots Coordinator Gamelan Interactive Group www.gamelan.tv Berkshire Mtn. You could convert the optical to coaxial using a Midiman CO2. You can find details about it on our Web page. Perhaps a less expensive solution would be to use one of our 7-Pin-to-Coax cables. Details about that too are on our Web page. I hope this helps! It had the same features as the Plus but had a breakout cable for xlr (AES/EBU in/out). The Gold, by comparison has coax i/o but it supports AES input (nothing too extraordinary anymore). Both of these cards doubled as ADAT 8-channel input devices as well as standard 2-channel digital or analog i/o. We still stock the Prodif Plus at a great price. Give us a call on the toll-free line if interested. Happy Recording, Marc Marc Nutter Mike Remmers Sonic Sense, Inc. 2755 S. [Note that we are full-line dealers for both DPA and MBHO and have no particular bias one way or the other.] In my opinion, the DPAs, being among the best sounding miniature omnis available, would be the better choice. For stealthy applications where size is important, there's no comparison between the MBHO 603A pre-amp/KA100 omni capsule combination and the DPA 4060/4061s (omni) capsules (as used in our High End Binaural microphone set). The DPAs are much, much smaller. If you used the KA100 omni capsule with the 603A pre-amp (or the 648A, if you needed its smaller size with only 1 dB increase in self-noise), you'd have a good sounding omni setup, but (again, in my opinion) it wouldn't compare to the size-comparable DPA 4051/4052/4053 in either sound quality or quality of finish. Compared to the much smaller DPA 4060/4061, again the DPA would sound slightly better but the MBHO would have a slightly lower self-noise (inconsequential for live concert recording). If you'd like pricing on the MBHOs, please call. > Also, would the Denecke AD-20/Zefiro InBox make a significant difference > with either of these mics, recording with a D100/M1. We use all of those devices here, and I can say that the AD-20/InBox offers a significant sound quality improvement over the PCM-M1's pre-amp/A-to-D converter. The TCD-D100/PCM-M1 used with HEBs and an AD-20/InBox is quite a wonderful sounding compact recording rig. I hope that this helped. However, since many of us sell at prices way below what manufacturers call "MAP--Minimum Advertised Pricing," we can not post these numbers on our webpages. Additionally, here at Sonic Sense, we greatly value personal relationships with our clients. Speaking with someone looking for equipment helps us assist you in buying what best suits your needs. It also allows someone investigating equipment to get a feeling for the dealer they are going to work with. With high-end equipment like many of us offer, life-long product support should accompany the gear. Personal contact remains a priority over simply offering the best published price. I hope other dealers share these sentiments. Happy Recording, Marc Marc Nutter Mike Remmers Sonic Sense, Inc. 2755 S. Feel free to close this now, or to read and disagree, but no flames please. Marc, I understand what you are saying and that's fine, but then don't have a specific area for "Price" if it is going to be blank 85% of the time. I went on to the site in question after the post was made, brought up about 20 items and 17 had "Call For Price". I shop from many high-end sites that do not list pricing. But these sites should not look like one of the bargain-basement sites and have everything come up "Call for price". Instead, make pages for the equipment by that manufacturer and display then nicely with links for detailed specs and state at the bottom of the page exactly what you are saying in that email. I have a great relationship with several pro audio places here in NYC and i know that they are going to give me a good deal, but I don't expect those same places to have web sites or take out ads that look like J&R or Home Depot. Let's take Marc's (sonicsense) site for instance. It really could use a redesign with all of that big centered text, but aside from that, it shows the products, gives some info that is immediately of interest to the high-end audio equipment buyer, has a link for additional details and finally has a link for contact info to get pricing, or in some cases lists a price that can be listed and gives a link to contact for lower pricing. Here is the contrast (and Frank, please take this as constructive criticism, not as a flame): http://www.cascademedia.net/cgi-bin/cmedia/scan/st=sql/fi=recorders/se=CD%20 Recorders/sf=subcat/tf=brand/to=/va=cat%3drecorders/va=subcat%3dCD%20Recorde rs/va=subcat2%3d/va=catcode%3dcdrec.html It is Cascade's page for CD recorders. Now, this is obviously a database-driven site, so it runs with generic pages and tables, but is that really the best choice for a site like this? I sampled about 15% pf the site randomly. It seems that the only place where prices are listed are those where what is being sold are commodity items (IDE CD burners, blank media, etc). In some cases (digital sound cards) it is quite competative, and in others (blank media) it is not. But is this trying to attract the same type of customer with both high-end and commodity items? I would think there is a difference Of course, everyone will have their own opinion, but mine does come from many years of working in E-Commerce and creating sites similar to both of these in concept. I don't expect my opinion to change the world. It probably won't change either of these sites (although the large, centered text could stand with some replacing.....) How do I shop? I do a great percentage of it over the Internet. I'm still going to buy my blank DAT and DDS tapes from someone like Art Munson, who sends me emails of his specials and has great low pricing, because these are commodity items. I am more likely to buy my next DAT recorder from Marc however. His site says to me that there is someone there who will answer my questions and will know what is going on if I call with a problem. Frank's site makes me think that if I call with a problem I am going to get one of those idiots that you get when you call MicroWarehouse with a bad product and has to check the database for the answer and can't even pronounce the names of the products. It may not be like that in reality, but that's not the impression I get from that type of site. If you have playback levels, you should be good 3) Always test the batteries before leaving to make sure they are good. I recently had a brand new set of regular Duracell DOA at a show, and when I flipped the pre on, had NOTHING!!! Had I made sure they were good, I would have come away with a stellar tape, because the opener sounded awesome If this helps just one person to come away with a tape when it might otherwise have been blank, it will be worth it. Good luck and have fun....Dave _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "demon ." Pardon the barrage of messages to the list all at once. I hope the input is helpful. As most know, we are a Pro Audio Dealer but I personally use all of the equipment we offer. I tend to liken the MBHO's more to the DPA 4021/22 type microphone more than the 4060. The 4060, while it is used for musical recording, and can sound great, is really intended for placement on stage talent--in hair lines, on clothing (ie. unobtrusive applications). For music recording, it is a dramatic improvement over less expensive "stealth mics," but once you've crossed into the $1000.00 price range, going the additional distance for the MBHO's is well worthwhile. Of course, the plunge into 4021/22's is yet another story--they do deliver that final bit of finesse, detail, depth of stereo image, etc... The beauty of the MBHO, while bigger than the 4060/61 is that they offer interchangeable capsules (cardioids, subcards, omnis, hypers, and even a couple large diaphragm options) and in many cases, a cardioid is much better suited than an omni. Additionally, the price point is quite pleasing to many. For those interested in auditioning equipment before purchasing, we offer the following deals: DPA & MBHO: 100% of rental for up to one week can be applied to purchase MBHO: 45-day satisfaction guarantee (in addition to the lifetime warranty). We will buy back at 85% if you aren't totally satisfied The same type of policies apply to a lot of other equipment we offer.
