It is also fairly "live". If this is your first time, make it simple -- mics up high enough to have a good line to all the players, set up in one of the major configurations (binaural, ORTF, 90 degrees) -- and placed about 1/2 the distance back from the nearest performer as the stage is wide. Record a rehearsal in several versions, and listen back for room effects. Remember that the audience will deaden some of the sound. Watch out for the celli ... keep the mic out of a direct line with the f-holes. Listen for boominess and resonance on one note. If there's a lot of boom, ask to have some carpeting thrown in front of the group. Don't forget the little things -- tape your mic cables in a loop so they don't transfer floor sound & don't bang; use mic isolation; be careful not to be too close to any reflective surface (comb filter effects can be nasty). Keep the setup the same for all players so you don't sudden shift of sound, color, and ambience when you cut it all onto a CD later. I'm giving you my rules of thumb when I have no time to test out a location. Do nothing fancy. Use single-point placement. Stay the 1:2 distance away. Listen. Test all levels, and use turn on the deck's mic limiter (not the AGC) if you have no opportunity to listen to the whole concert ahead. You'll probably be pleased. Others? Good luck! I basically just supports the big chains like Circuit City to maintain uniform pricing. Virtually all the manufacturers have, what they call, "Minimum Advertised Prices," which means, you can sell the item at any price ("we're not price-fixing"), but, you can't advertise it below a certain price. If you do, they get very nasty with you. I know because I've done this several times, mostly by mistake (in one case, the manufacturer raised their price, and I didn't know about the new higher price, so I accidentally offered it to DAT-Heads at the same price we had always sold it for. You wouldn't believe how much shit hit the fan for this). The manufacturers are pretty broad in what they consider an "advertisement", including any posting on a newsgroup or to DAT-Heads, so... Games with price will continue... --G ------------------------------ From: =?iso-8859-1?q?el=20paquisto?= Subject: the donnnas bnp offer Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 12:02:10 +0200 (CEST) 5-13-01 source: schoeps msct>mk4>mp-2>sharp md-mt 831 for the 3 first who e-mail me --m ______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Also, it really has nothing to do with how "professional" a site looks. In fact, while your site is certainly "cleaner", as someone in the field, I feel that it looks not so much "professional" as "cookie cutter". Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that there is anything wrong with that. It shows a great investment and that a great deal of care went into it. I do however, think that you might consider having a slightly different home page where you talk more about the company, the service and the people, then click through from there into what is now your current home page. Keep the same background and the logo and bar on the top, but rather than presenting the hot deal and the four products, expand the "News and Announcements" column to be your whole home page and make the specials show up on the second page. This, again, is just my opinion, but I feel that this one change for an example would make you seem "friendlier" rather than more of a catalog shop, which is the impression that your current site gives. It may not be like that in reality, but that's not > the impression I get from that type of site. Cascade Media prides itself on customer service and product knowledge first and foremost. That has been our philosophy from the beginning and it remains that way today. By professionalizing our site with more product info than ANY of our competitors we feel we are providing a true service for those shopping for high end gear. As Marc stated, we also do not put pricing because of MAP policies, but also so that we can discuss products with our customers and help them make the right decision for their needs especially considering the cost and investment you are making. Your post infers that less "professional" looking sites are going to be the ones where you will get better info and service, yet the ones that have a professional appearance will not. This is where we disagree. We believe that we can combine professionalism, good info, some pricing and secure ordering into one website, yet also be here for product support when you are serious about purchasing something. It allows the consumer to get their initial answers from the site (without being redirected to a manufactures site) then call us for specific questions. We are by no means a "bargain basement" business, but we do offer very competitive pricing on many products. In addition, there are many of the same people buying 'commodity' items as well as high end items. Why limit ourselves? We can provide quality customer service for both. If you don't believe it give us a try. That would be better than making assumptions about our service in a public forum before you have ever dealt with us. I am about to try and record 3 Radiohead shows this month in California, and I needed some serious help! Normally, I would ask these types of questions expecting a "well, you could try this, or that, it's up to you", but due to the lack of time and experience I have, I would appreciate some good cold hard answers! ;) First off, I bought a Sony TCD-D3, and a pair of Core Sound binaurals w/ the switchable filter. The D3 I got came with the "bootleggers" battery pack that attaches itself to the D3 through a hollow Ni battery. So, question #1, tape. Where should I get it? What brand? What length? How many? There is still time for an internet order, but time is ticking. I live in Seattle if that helps. Question #2, how many batteries will I need for all 3 shows? Question #3, How should I get the stuff into the shows? What are some of the best methods for sneaking it in, etc? The tickets say "No Recording" on them, so I imagine they will do a little checking, if not for weapons/drugs also. I've been to tons of shows at the Gorge, and all they did was make you lift up your shirt and pant legs... Question #4, how should I set the mics/rig up once I'm in? I have front-middle section seats, about 12 rows back, smack in the center of the section. Should I be wary of the security during the show, will they spot my two mics sprouting from my hat and take action? I'm very concerned about this aspect of the taping. I do NOT want my stuff taken! Question #5, wind screens? Bass roll-off filter? LP/SP? Mic/Line in? Mic Att 20db/0db? (what is that Mic ATT switch anyway?) Anything special I need to do with my tape before I start? After the tape ends? Ok, I guess I have a million more questions when it comes to getting home and dumping this down onto my hard drive, but I will save those for later (hell, I may not have a DAT by the time I get home) :) Thanks for any info you guys can give me. I've been reading the FAQ, and a ton of the archives, and the last 5-6 DAT-Heads digests, and have already learned a ton! Cardioids are good for spot mic-ing and handling problematic noise sources, but an omni will be the better sounding mic in most cases. I suggest that you try a pair of omnis with a Jecklin Disk or Schneider Disk. The omni mics get mounted on either side of the Disk. A good starting point is center the Disk and place it as far out in front of the ensemble as the ensemble is wide. I'd use a Schneider for both of your groups. If you were recording a still larger group I might prefer a Jecklin Disk. I hope this helps. First, very few 4mm drives actually have audio extraction capability. There are a number of vendors out on the web that have stocks of remaindered SGI drives. I got mine from Mashek Consulting for about $150. Then you need software that will extract the audio stream without the low level subcodes. See Wayne Hoxsie's page at http://www.hoxnet.com/dat-tools/ for stuff that will write the data to a .au file. In a pinch, you can dd from the drive and pipe to a program that strips off the subcodes, leaving raw PCM. My drive doesn't seem to sense end of audio tapes, so I have to either stop extraction when the file reaches a certain size, or extract per-track with the DAT-tools. After that, sox can create a WAV file for manipulation with your favorite sound editor. A Google search for dat audio dds provides other useful info.
