imho, yes!
i may be explaining this incorrectly, but i believe you'll potentially
lose 12 db worth of audio information that's in the lower bits (or
above whatever the resolution floor for 16 bit digital audio would be),
if your peaks were to hit -12 dB instead of 0 dB (your recording
will be the equivalent of fewer than 16 bits in terms of dynamic range)
even if you were to raise the overall levels in an audio editor
on your pc afterwards by 12 dB, the missing 12 dB would not be
recoverable...
on the other hand, there will probably be considerable debate over how
audible this potential 12 db loss would be in 16-bit audio, though it'll
certainly affect some of the low-level harmonics and reverberent signal
that provides important spatial cues...it may also be argued that
sacrificing the last 12 db of information possible in a full-range
16-bit recording would be much preferable to digital overs!
if i'm sprouting nonsense or misrepresenting digital theory, which i
admit to not being all that knowledgable about, please feel free to
correct my above statements... :)

I have a hardly used, perfect condition Pioneer D-9601 DAT recorder for
sale. I have probably used it for about 20 hours: I=B9ve recorded shows on my
Sony portable and then used the D9601 to transfer into my Mac. I think the
Pioneer is a rebadged Fostex.

I have two mic stands for sale. Both are manufactured by Monfotto, one of the most respected names in the business. They are as follows:
1. Bogen stand. Kind of a stealth style stand, very compact and lightweight. Extends to about 7 or 8 feet. Aluminum construction, metalic color finish. Very good condition.
2. Calumet stand. About the same height as the one above but made of heavier duty materials, maybe a little taller. Larger in actual size, but much more sturdy. Much better for a tapers section application. Black colored aluminum.
Both stands are in good condition. 50.00 each plus shipping. Contact me for mpre information.. Peace-

Does anyone know offhand of any good sites with tutorials with some good
advice on handling tweaking of Aud. DATs? Back from a 7 night Clapton DAT
run (M1 and CS Stealth Binaurals) and I'd love to bring up the average level
of the acoustic set but the peaks from crowd applause tend to make
normalization not work well, and if I just select the song portions it
brings good results but then there's a radical volume jump between segments.
Playing with limiting a bit as well, but at this point just fiddling around
with Cool Edit - any advice would be appreciated.

Subject: Chamber Music - Mic Placement Advice ???
Hey -
I've "volunteered" to tape a chamber music recital Friday evening for my
daughters' amateur orchestra group. A local music store has offered us a
pair of Shure SM81s (along with stands, cables and a pre-amp/mixer) for the
project. I'll be recording into one of my home dat decks.
There will be a couple of selections by the "large" ensemble (22 players,
predominantly violins, with a few cellos and violas), and 10 or 12 duets,
quartets, etc. The recital hall is fairly small (the whole group takes up
about half the room). It is also fairly "live".
Any advice, tips, suggestions on mic placement to best record with the
equipment we've been offered in this situation will be greatly
appreciated ----
Thanks -
Tom

If you can convert to RCA jacks, Radio Shack has a $25 switch box
that allows you to have 3 inputs and 3 outputs and select which
source to listen to and which output to send it to. I have 2 of
them ganged together to control all my analog sources.
It's been a few years since I got them, so the price may have
gone up a tad.
good luck

I have one pair of long AES/EBU cables that I run to my 2
computers
*from* my DAT decks (for input) and *to* my DA-1000 (for
playback).
It's difficult to get to the back of the computers as my digital
soundcards'
breakout XLR cables are very short. So it's a big hassle to
change into
which card the long AES/EBU cables are plugged.
Anyone know of an inexpensive switching box that allows you to
switch
between 2 inputs/outputs. Or one that has 2 such switches so
that I
don't have to buy 2?
peace, further...

I don't need a lesson on DAT vs MD. I am sold.
But is there a way I can ABSOLUTELY say a cdr is DAT sourced, whether
Audience or SoundBoard?
I do have Cool edit pro if such a technique exists.

Hi Friends,
I just received a message from a prominent recording and touring artist
who was sent the link to my list. Most of you have heard of him or heard his
work.
He stated that he doesn't allow taping. He said he feels like it's somebody
breaking into his house and taking the beer from his fridge. It's not the
missing beer that bugs him, it's the taping without his permission.
I respect his opinion. I want to respond tactfully. I'd really like to
present the "other"side of the argument. There are a lot of artists that
allow taping. I think it actually helps promote the artist etc.
If any of you have any info that would help me in my response I would
appreciate it.
I know Emmylou Haris spoke recently about Napster and about not hiding your
gifts etc.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Kurt
