Date: Sat, 9 Jun 2001 20:36:16 EDT I have always wondered; when I set my HHB CDR-850 to record from another digital source, it actually is able to tell me WHAT THAT SOURCE IS!! So my question is; HOW does the HHB know and display what it is receiving; either a DAT source or CD or other? I cant sleep. D ------------------------------ From: mikeedmo@voicenet.com Subject: Re: determining DAT vs MD source Date: Sat, 9 Jun 101 21:44:13 -0400 (EDT) > But is there a way I can ABSOLUTELY say a cdr is DAT sourced, whether > Audience or SoundBoard? > I do have Cool edit pro if such a technique exists. It's pretty easy to tell a MD/MP3-sourced recording in Cool Edit's spectral view; the waveform shape has sort of a "sculpted" look, with no signal at all in the missing frequecy ranges. It's a little like looking at an LP DAT or FM signal after conversion to 44.1k, where the upper frequencies are completely dark: the utter lack of background signal is the giveaway. -Michael ------------------------------ From: "Barnett Helzberg" Subject: Jorma/Jack Taping Policy Date: Sat, 9 Jun 2001 22:56:24 -0400 >Also, Jorma and Jack will be playing a couple of shows >locally in early July - what is their current policy? At the Bottom Line two summers ago, I setup my mics on a stand because when I called earlier in the day, the venue confirmed that taping would be allowed. As I was setting up, Jorma's wife/manager asked me if I had permission from the band to tape. I told her that I got permission from the venue earlier in the day and after checking with them, she said that since the venue MISLED me, she would allow me to tape (as long as I sent her a copy). She acted like taping was not something she wanted to encourage, although it may be allowed as long as there wasn't a new recording being promoted at the show. The policy was definitely ASK FIRST. I used to have an email address for her, but I can't find it anymore. You may be able to get permission from the venue beforehand. So my question is; HOW does the HHB know and display > what it is receiving; either a DAT source or CD or other? Part of the subcode of the signal specifies the source type. It isn't always accurate, especially with older decks. Seth ------------------------------ From: Thomas Wulf Subject: defending taping and trading Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 03:34:39 -0400 yes!! so it should work better to make him understand what drives us. whi= ch is the urge to preserve our memories and the appreciation of each performance of a worthy artist. you may also want to ask him if he's really happy with the few live recordings of, say Robert Johnson, Tim Buckley or even Janis Joplin? Wouldn't it be wonderful to have more of their art being preserved? As for the material aspect: Nothing is lost but so much is gained. After coming across two Pattiy Smith shows last month i went out and bought all= her albums on CD again.. :):):) ------------------------------ From: "ted mann" Subject: Digital-quality broadcasts over FM band? Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 09:33:07 Anyone know current developments going on in digital transmissions for radio broadcasting? I think this would be a dream come true for tapers of radio-simulcasted concerts. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "Onno J.R. Onno ------------------------------ From: Mike Subject: ECM-MS-907 Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 09:04:56 -0400 I have been using one of these Sony's for a couple of years with a WM-D6C. (I've yet to go digital, except in the mixdown). It's a good mike, somewhat midrangey, but makes cymbals and other highs sound great. Remember, I am using it with a Pro analog Walkman, maybe someone who's used it on the rig you have might answer. A nice feature on the mike is a switch to set the degree of stereo seperation....(it works well, too!) Mike B ------------------------------ From: Gianni Pavan Subject: Problems with Win2000 Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 15:59:08 +0200 Hi, since yesterday I used a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4280 laptop to record using either an Opcode SonicPort or a Roland UA30. I spent the weekend to install Win2000 and now I no more get continuous gap-free recording!! Every few second I get scratchy sounds. Each scratch is a series of transients due to missing blocks of audio data. The same happens if I use the internal sound device! Can someone suggest a solution ?? Or I must go back to Win98SE ?? Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 10:08:34 -0400 My digi-IO card (WaveTerminal 2496) supports digital input up to 96KHz using 24-bit data. DAT uses 16-bit linear encoding to hold its samples, at 44.1KHz and 48KHz. When I sample a DAT to my hard drive, then, is there any advantage to putting CoolEdit 2000 onto its 32-bit setting to capture the entire 24-bit input from my soundcard? Or is this just the zero-padded equivalent of the 16-bit datastream coming out of my DAT deck? OR, does this all depend on whether my soundcard just pads the 16-bit signal into its native 24-bit datum, or instead does some kind of weird upsampling conversion? Come to think of it, I'm not sure if my card even uses a native 24-bit datum... it probably just has 32-bit registers and zero-pads them always. I understand that certain processes (like NR) have cleaner results when applied to 32-bit samples vs 16-bit samples, that's not really my question here. Thanks. -Jeff Ishaq ------------------------------ From: "Clay R.
