Most of my taping will be done with the capsules in a hat, loud bands, many with bass that will be pretty heavy/boomy. I've heard numerous recordings of loud rocks band from the Schoeps in a hat (Alex is the King!) and have been very impressed. The bass handling especially is very nice. Haven't heard as many loud rock acts with the Neumann's from a hat (have done a few shows ((Fugazi, Melvins)) with a 15 foot stand and have been impressed). Anyone have any input on the Neumann's from the hat? What about the difference in the MK4's and the MK4V's. Going with the MK4V would put me out of my price range. Plus I'm thinking tht the 4's would be better in a hat. Is there an ORTF bar for the Schopes capsules like there is with the Neumann's? (anyone have a part number?) Obviously, I'm liking the price on the Neumann's (about $700-$800 less with the actives). Also considering the MBHO's, but I'm going to have a partner on the rig, and he's not down with them. The rest of the rig is an AD20 and an MP2, a SBM1 will be substituted for stealth shows. To eliminate extra gear when stealthing (a couple local theater's I go to often shake you down pretty good), I'm hoping to plug the mic bodies straight into the MP2, so I just have to carry the actives. I'm assuming that this is possible?? Are there any disadvantages to running it like this? I was thinking of putting a camera type strap on the MPs, so it will rest against my chest or stomach, eliminating any pressure on the mic bodies from placement. Lot's o' questions, eh? How about those Av's!!! Looking forward to learn from your experiences, Gianni ============================================================== Gianni Pavan Email gpavan@cibra.unipv.it >> Background programs and optional system features (like CD insert notification) may take away processor time for doing other tasks while your intention to perform continuous gap-free audio transfer is sidestepped. Faster computers help keep gaps minimized, but sometimes a system is burdened with too many running programs, system features, and system boards that occasionally produce other tasks and interrupts; these can cause gaps in the audio being transferred. If WIN 2000 is like WIN98, in the computer property window there is a system sub-window that allows you to save your present configuration and then REMOVE devices and system boards (like a LAN board) from operating "in this configuration." Remove as many devices as are suspect and not needed for Audio DAW critical work. Shut down all background programs like virus and screen saver and Save this new configuration as something like 'DAW Transfer-Editing.' Choose this configuration during systems boots when you are needing a 'quieter system' for doing certain streaming audio work. You may want to sign on with a new user name or specify an alternate desktop for having certain background programs not be automatically loaded and run, or just always remember to disable all those programs before doing audio transfer type work. Reply-To: Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 10:17:35 -0500 (CDT) I went to the St. Louis Guitar Center over the weekend and noticed that they carry the Oktava MC-012's at a pretty reasonable price ($149 for the cardioid w/10dB pad). One web sales page I had run across some time ago mentioned that they compare favorably with the Neumann KM-184's. I didn't give it much credence as everyone says their product is as good as the best. I was in luck though as GC had a used KM-184 taken in trade and I could use it to compare the two. First let me thank Guitar Center in general and Pro-Audio salesman Dave Johnson (I think that's his name) in particular for tolerating my questions and incessant demands for all kinds of wierd testing scenerios. We took the two mics into the sound booth and hooked them up to a mixer and PA and set all the parameters up the same for both and did some vocal tests. Neither of us could tell a difference. I know vocal tests don't mean much for live recording, so we set up some other tests, with some rock feed from a stereo and listened on headphones. Again, neither of us could tell a difference. Granted, this was a less than objective and far from thorough test, and with only one Neumann, I couldn't do any stereo tests, but it was enough to convince me to give these mics a shot. I purchased a pair of the multi-capsule sets (omni, card, and hyper w/10 dB pad) and Dave even let me pick and choose capsules and bodies from several boxes to get sets with even looking finishes. My pocketbook is pleased at a grand total of $426.00 and I'm ready to try them out at my next live gig. I'd appreciate any comments from anyone whose used these with any recommendations on placement, etc. Thanks. -- Wayne D. Ron Dalton ------------------------------ From: WeAreThel@aol.com Subject: Please help me find the "best" mic pre-amp out there Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 13:59:34 EDT Hello all. I have been shopping for a mic pre-amp for about 2 months now, and am still fairly confused as to what is great, and what is just marketing hype. These are the pre-amps I have been looking at: Sonosax SX-M2 - This seems to be the standard out there for most stealth tapers. I can only find it for it's new price of just under a grand. It has no A/D conversion but seems to be the fullest pre-amp on the market (stealth-wise); I am sur the AD-1000 is actually one of the fullest out there, but it's just too big for my use. AETA EAA PSP-2 and PSP-3 - Can only find this one new as well; I can't even find anyone who uses it. It is pretty much the same price as the Sonosax. From one audio dealer said, they like it over the Sonosax, saying, it sounds a lot cleaner and better. I know it is *slightly* smaller in size, and both the PSP-2 and PSP-3 are the same dimensions, but the only difference between these two models I can find is that the PSP-3 allowed you to do M/S (mid-side) recording, which I will never be doing. Denecke AD-20 - This is a pre-amp and A/D converter in one I believe, and even supports 48V phantom power. Due to the lower price tag, not sure what I'd be losing in quality? I know it's a much smaller unit though. Graham Patten Sound Pals DMIC-20 - again, much cheaper in price, and smaller to oI believe. This is the best 48V mic pre-amp and A/D converter in one I can find, that is very small and affordable. However, due to the lower price range and not hearing much of it, I fear it sucks as far as getting a very full sound goes. Sound Devices MP-2 - I believe this is a small mic pre-amp, that is only several hundred dollars. I do not think it has an A/D converter, which I have heard is not very necessary anyways... I would be using the pre-amp unit I choose with something else I am going to order shortly. That would be the Neumann SKM-140 stero microphone kit, which I have heard is the best sound I can get for stealth taping. Please, if anyone can give me their input and tell me what is crap and what is not for stealth taping (particularly of what I mentioned), that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. -Tom PS - I taped Fuel and Aerosmith last night from the front of the LAWN last night and it sounds fairly decent. I am borrowing a pair of CSB binaurals (LC) and the results were average; perhaps being in a nice seat near the stage would've helped. I didn't bother spending the high amount of money because I didn't have the rig I planned on having by now. Upcoming shows to be taped: 6/11 - PJ Harvey/U2 at First Union Center, Philadelphia (may use the ALD unit, may not) 6/12 - Fuel/Aerosmith at PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ -then some more U2 shows later on with pro mics I plan to rent (U-87 ? : ) ------------------------------ From: "*~ pwk ~*" Subject: live macy gray?
