This deck is the most affordable DVD-R drive to hit the market yet. It will write to General Purpose DVD-R (2X or about 28 minutes for 4.7GB), CDR (8X), and CDRW (4X). It is an ATAPI interface. A 28 minute DVD-R burn is equivalent to writing 7 CDR's in 4 minutes a piece. As it writes to general purpose disks, the media will be much more affordable for this drive as opposed to the previous DVD-R drive from Pioneer which required Authoring disks. Here are a couple more articles to check out about this product: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,44088,00.asp http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2705610,00.html http://www.medialinenews.com/issues/2001/news/0314/0314.2.shtml We have this drive (in a retail pack with software) in stock now, so please contact me privately for more details if you are interested. They are sure to go fast as availability is really limited. Can you please read this and post it on DAT-Heads? I know many who read the list knew either Alex or his parents and regarded them fondly: Hi Friends, When I was in the thick of touring back in the 80s and 90s, I knew a couple named Marc & Karen Lee from Chester, New York .... many of you may know Marc as "Stagger Lee".... he was one of those legendary "nice guy" tapers.... always at the shows, always there with a patch when you needed him... never the kind of person to even snicker when you got a shit tape. His wife Karen was always similar in kindness and concern. But the real crown jewel of this wonderful couple was their son Alex, whom they took everywhere with them. Alex was the kind of boy whom you'd look at from a Deadhead's perspective and think, "now that's the perfect son to have, if I ordered the perfect Son/Pal/TourMate from like Sears or GDM.... Alex is what I'd expect to get".... He was EXTREMELY CEREBRAL, very very kind... and just a fun kid to have in your company. There wasn't a single one of us in my gang who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to keep an eye on Alex for Marc and Karen (not like he needed it, he was always perfectly behaved and had a great attitude). Alex was famous for giving concise and highly objective reviews after the show... and frankly, I never met a fairer more "Siskel & Ebert" reviewer of Dead Shows. And frankly, everyone just plain loved it.I have often looked at my 2 1/2 year old son when he'd come out with something that was funny or well-reasoned... and think about Alex and hope that I will someday be treated to the obvious joys that Alex brought to his parents. In his teens he'd gone on to make his parents VERY PROUD, being the consumate shining star in everything he did (take a look at the union college piece if you want a taste of what having a perfect child really is. Well, the unfortunate thing is that due to a tragic accident on Sunday, Alex has been taken from us all. I have no doubt that this always altruistic young man would have gone on to great things and benefitted lots of folks. And I cannot imagine what Marc and Karen could possibly be going through right now. I am hoping that if you do nothing else today, that you take a moment out of your busy day to contemplate the loss of our friends and ultimately, our loss too. I know it's short notice, but the funeral is today @ 1pm and the Family is sitting sheva for the rest of the week, however, I am still leaving the contact info in case any of you want to contact Marc & Karen and express your condolences personally. And I think those of you who have the ability to, might want to consider remembering Alex to all those you touch. Cause HE was really what it all about. http://www.union.edu/News/CollegeNews/Releases/2000-2001/lee2.html http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyKey=59977&category=C# Alex's Service is: 1pm June 12 (Alexander Lee) Riverside Memorial Chapel 21 W. Please. As for myself, I'm going home today to hug my boy really hard. Thanks, Peace, Tom Denman P.A.E. All other things being equal.... Will a very expensive studio quality digital I/O card make better .wav files than a Zoltrix Nightingale? I mean, if it is agreed upon that the Nightingale does accurate bit for bit digital i/o, then how can the ending files be any worse than if the stream of 1s and 0s were done on a $2k card? If yes, then where is "cut off" of inexpensive vs. expensive? At what point am I doing this at it's full potential? I'm about to undertake a project involving a lot of dat > pc transfers. I just want to make sure the efforts are not in vein. My current setup for this is pcm-m1>midiman c02 s/pdif format converter > zoltrix nightengale. [SNIP] No. Bits are bits are bits--if we assume that both work reliably and make 100% digital copies. There are other factors such as the quality of the drivers, the latency of the OS, etc. that may make the more expensive ones more reliable at getting every bit accurately copied, but the Zoltrix seems to be as good at this as any other IMHO. -- Wayne D.
