I was a diehard Maxell user until the WSP 12/30/00 Chilly Water ran just barely over 2:00 and the tape ran out! after I already had to borrow an OADE 248 since one of my cheapass AKG B-18's crapped out just before Derek Trucks a couple days before and then........ My buddy Murph taped Ratdog at TPAC on a Maxell MBHO's>MP-2>DA-P1 ..... The levels showed on his deck during the show, but when he got home his tape was blank If he would have had a Sony portable.... the tape may have not loaded and he may have been forced to use another tape w/ potentially better results Good thing he had some patchers that got it After all......... Taping IS a TEAM Sport D-Rider From: Aaron Subject: new Sony tapes Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 16:15:55 -0700 Any comments on the brand new Sony DG60P tapes? I just received a few of them and sony has modified them a bit. for one thing, the clear plastic window is smaller. you can tell new from old by looking at the j-card. where the old one said "premium" in a gold oval, the new one replaces that with a circle saying "1.3GB uncompressed, 2.6GB compressed" and moves the "premium" up by the 60P. I wonder if anyone has noticed a change in quality or performance. ------------------------------ From: "Winnie" Subject: 200 CDR for $20 Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 07:44:00 -0400 Heads up... just got 200 CD-R for $60 with a $40 rebate coupon from STAPLES in New England. Date: 16 Jun 2001 14:56:10 +0100 Hello, What place in the Netherlands can I bring my D100 to for a regular check up? I.e. retension, head alignment, etc, etc? I am looking for a professional place with good turnaround time and relatively low fee. Of course I can go to Sony but are there any alternatives or tips? (need to use for U2 show) Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 11:17:44 -0500 I would say, put the KM-140's ORTF in your hat, with the capsules over your forehead, you might want to wear a baseball cap backwards(I got one called a summer cap, made of mesh) . The Neumann ORTF bar fits great under a hat, although I prefer to run with windscreens so the capsules don't dig into my skull. You might attempt to stabilize the assembly using velcro (hook & loop fastener). I think the KM-140's are some of the best sounding mics for most stealth applications. They are much more forgiving of poor location than the schoeps or DPA's. . . I have heard that the shure miniature drum mics (beta 98??) are OK for stealth, but although I like shure's mics for stage use, I would probably not use them for audience recording. I use the KM-140's into a Beyer MV-100 preamp, and it sounds fine, although I have to pad the mics by -10 dB using the switch on the bodies if it's going to be a super-loud show, so the fixed +20dB gain of the beyer won't blow it's headroom. The beyer is unbalanced outputs only. also, becuase the beyer has stepped gain, I must set record levels with my DAT deck- I could get the SBM-1 but my D-10 is about the same, except for the sample rate. good luck! -tom ps- if you need more headphone sound, try a dedicated headphone amp. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: WeAreThel@aol.com Subject: Best mic pre-amp? (need to use for U2 show) Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 03:37:05 EDT Hi, thanks to all those who responded to my last post on mic pre-amps. I now have it narrowed down to the two best? stealth mic pre-amps (from what I can tell). These are the AETA PSP-3 and the Sonosax SX-M2. I am sure the type of mics I will be using will determine which will have the best sound for me. So since I will likely be using the SKM-140 set (AK-40 capsules) or the U-87 or U-89, I suppose those will be the basis. My number one concern is sound quality. I asked a musician today what he thought the best all-purpose (audience) mics are. He said Shure. Is this a good opinion? I honestly can make a fairly good opinion in saying that Neumann is best, although I am sure Schoeps are awesome too. I hear good and bad about all so maybe a shed of light on the "best" stealth mics you can think of could help. I was thinking of buying the pre-amp ASAP and renting a microphone to try out for a U2 show on 6/22. I will be GA so I will be in the crowd surrounded by people. Luckily I am tall (6' 3 1/2") so mounting the mic(s) shouldn't be tough. I have experience with capsules (none were pro) and no experience with mics like the U-87 and U-89. Is it worth it trying one of those latter two mics for this show? I will need to hide the mic remember.. So I was thinking a mounting process via my throat area. I am sure this is an awful method (sonically speaking). Any advice for my mic pre-amp and mic renting plan? One more thing: can a mic pre-amp be used as a 1/8" headphone amp to boost the output of a weak headphone jack, and possibly clear any hiss? Thanks for any help, Tom ------------------------------ From: "Andy Liu" Subject: RE: Bootlegers lurking on Datheads - Apologies! Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 10:39:52 -0700 I wish to apologize for my generalization of italian bootlegers. I certainly didn't want to offend and it seems like I did. The 'slimeball' statment was a general statement aimed at all profiting bootleggers, not at italian bootleggers in particular. Again, I'm truly sorry to those I have offended...it was totally moronic. Supreme noise from Japan. Very short tour, and they only hit the US once every 3-5 years. It would seem possible to get the entire tour taped rather easily. Can anyone get these shows, especially the San Fran ones. Have tons of stuff to offer in trade, al sorts of music, not just crazy Japanes noise. They are taper friendly. At the show ask KK Null, bald Japanese guy, mustache, about 5'8", stocky. Can't miss him. But my guess is that stealth is required for the San Fran shows. All owned by the People's Liberation Army (PLA), fronted by several "civilian" companies. Their high speed videotape duplicators will probably not be replaced when they wear out. The have a bazillion of these. Sorry if some see this as a political post, but I'm giving you "just the facts, ma'am". Travis is a little boomy as I was at the back of the venue, but still very listenable, albeit with a little crowd noise. Dando show sounds much better, standing 1'-2' from the right PA stack. Some obtrusive crowd noise during one song, other than that, very nice tape. ------------------------------ From: "Brad Burleson" Subject: Casio DA7 Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 17:57:02 -0700 Hey now. Just got a great deal on a DA7 which looks mint, has around 1500 hours on it and came with metal (SKB style) case, the original box and the manual. Whats the general input on these things? I know it has SCMS, but Ive heard they are really solid and have a very reliable full size transport. Would it be a good primary deck or should I keep my D8? Or should I just sell it since I have only $250 invested in it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
