From: Ethan Adams Goddard <egoddard@fas.harvard.edu> Subject: TCD-D3 battery pack Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 10:19:51 -0400 howdy, anyone know if it's bad for a TCD-D3 to run 8.3V in through the 6V contcats on the back of the TCD-D3. I'm working up a small 6 (or 5) AA-cell NiMH battery pack and would like to get the extra capacity by strapping 6 cells in series (8.3V total) vs 5 cells in series (6.9V total) and then running it through the back on a modified and much reduced old BP-D3 shell to get that nice clean pocket-sized look. thanks, Ethan ***************************************************************** Ethan Adams Goddard Laboratory for Geochemical Oceanography Harvard University Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences Hoffman Lab - 20 Oxford Street Cambridge, Massachussetts 02138 617-496-1725 office 617-495-9977 lab goddard@eps.harvard.edu 617-496-4387 fax ****************************************************************

From: Michael Miller <mcmiller@Radix.Net> Subject: re: PNY disks and testing methods Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 10:37:41 -0400 (EDT) Not to be overly pedantic, but the number of coasters produced when burning a spindle of discs is a very shallow test and completely ignores the largest concern of everyone who archives: longevity. I feel that it's actually dangerous to use the number of coasters as a metric for choosing media because there is a false sense of confidence in many cases. I have cheap discs sent to me in trade that have already died in the sleeve within 6 months. For most people with large collections, there are discs that may not get played for several years. So then that $1.50 you saved really paid off didn't it. I strongly recommend that people read the aging test results that are published on the web and use only the best media for acrhiving and trading. If you want to use the cheap media for the car or to hand out in the lot, great. But be careful about buying private label media made in tiawan. The aging tests aren't perfect either, but they are a significantly more accurate indicator of longevity. I realize that this makes it harder for some merchants to offer their own specialty products if they haven't been listed in the test results. But next year, I won't care if I get a free replacement disc, I'll be pissed if I have to track down a copy of a set that someone has asked for in trade. Unless there are alot more people on this list who never used DAT, I don't know why this isn't obvious. I have old worn DAT tapes that were costly (Sony, KAO Gold, Maxell) and still play without errors. I have cheap DAT tapes that have dropouts and are essentially unrecoverable. (unlabeled KAOs, once used DATs). Only a few masters were on the cheap tapes. Of course, those are gone forever now. I'll feel better when three years from now someone posts that thier spindle of cheap discs all extract without error. michael ============================== >From: "Brad Burleson" <datbrad@hotmail.com> >Subject: PNY Discs >Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 10:51:50 -0700 > >I have burned through about 200 of these discs and had exactly 2 coasters, >one of which was my fault. 100 were the PNY Silver's and 100 were the PNY >Black Diamonds. From: Bill Shaw <Bill.Shaw@hds.com> Subject: SCMS / DVD Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 13:01:45 -0700 Well the DVD itself has the SCMS subcodes embedded on the disc, the DVD player transmits the subcodes to any device down the digital stream. So yes, consumer DVD players do employ SCMS technology. I wouldn't have expected anything else, we *are* talking about copyrighted digital audio and video data, after all... Bill RE: -----------original message------------ From: Beast914@aol.com Subject: SCMS from the DVD?? A BFD!! Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 09:54:13 EDT I spent about five hours integrating a new DVD player into my system. I took the S/PDIF out of the player and sent it to my DAT (ZA5ES) recorder. When I put the DAT deck into REC to pass the DVD's signal through it, the DAT deck comes up "PROHIBIT"!!! I was shocked!! Then I put a Stripper into the chain and sure enough, the DAT permitted the recording. SO: Is my DVD machine spitting out SCMS? Or is the DVD doing it?? Im shocked that its an issue.
From: Delano <eagle-winged-palace@home.com> Subject: Graham Patten ADC-20 -> Sony D8 ?? Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 16:15:58 -0400 just trying to evaluate some AD converter upgrade options. Has anyone used the Graham Patten ADC-20 in conjunction with the Sony D8? The ADC-20 output looks like AES. Is there an AES-> digi rca (so I can use Oade cable) or an AES-> Sony 7-pin cable that I could use to make the connection? Has anyone had field experience with the Oade mod (24 bit A/D converter -> 45 bit engine) to the Sony SBM1? How much better are the results? Take Care, Delano http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Center/3834/index.htm

From: "Paul Gibian" <ikoiko2u@home.com> Subject: Grateful Dead Dats Offer Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 14:41:48 -0700 Since 1997 I have traded dats, primarily Grateful Dead. I am converting my dat collection to cd. Currently, I plan to offer 135 dat shows that I've burned to cd, in several batches. This is the first batch. I will not break it up into smaller batches. Each batch goes to one person. If someone wants to get a quick start in the GD dat world with all 135 dat shows please let me know and I'll discuss off-line. I want three (3) Mitsui or Taiyo Yuden blanks for each dat. This exchange is well below current market prices for new dat blanks (as published at various sites, including TTapes.) I will pay postage to ship the dats to you for continental US only. Dats are Maxell labeled, unlabeled, or Sony DDS. Some are 60m, some are 90m. All have printed j-cards with song lists, lineage, etc.. Lineage is as it was provided to me at the time of trade. Caveat emptor, these are great tapes, however, they may have the occasional anomaly. I I acquired them primarily through trades on BUDD and related credible sources... The following 46 shows require 34 dats. Several of the dats have filler not listed in this posting. This translates to 102 cd blanks. I'll accept 100 and I pay postage to you...
