From: David Hollister <dhollist@iphase.com> Subject: DATs gone Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 15:38:57 -0700 That was quick. Hard to beat DATs at less than $1.50 a piece I guess. Anyway, there will probably be more later on. If you didn't hear back from me, sorry. I got a lot more responses than I expected. -- David Hollister -- Interphase Corporation Fibre Channel Driver Development

By "coaxial" we mean 75 Ohm coaxial cables with RCA connectors.) The answer is that, in general, both work fine, but that one or the other works better in specific circumstances. If electromagnetic interference (induced or emitted) is a consideration, optical is far superior. If the cable has to run more than the 10 to 14 meters that 1mm plastic fiber can handle without excessive loss, coaxial is far superior. If the distance is under 10 meters and there's no worry about interference, they're both fine. It used to be that, for jitter considerations during playback, coaxial was superior to Toslink. But the most recent generation of digital audio devices reclocks the data stream before the D-to-A process, so that's no longer the case -- now they're essentially interchangable. In your situation, optical would be the simplest and best choice. I hope that this helped! From: acffhmorst <morst@itis.com> Subject: 2 different mics for recording Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 18:04:06 -0500 Hey now!! Your plan will work, but the stereo image is going to be strange. I'm sure with the good mics like that the overall sound will be of high quality, but using two different flavors will get you some asymmetrical results. Antares makes a plug-in for DAE software, I think it's called mic emulator, it's very costly, but would allow you to change the sound of one mic into a simulation of the other one. You could try simulating two Rode's or two Neumanns and see which you like better. Hmm, ya know, mono and mix might be the best ticket. . . simply realize that you aren't going to have a proper stereo image with this setup, and just get two great mono signals, and mix to taste. . . maybe a little stereo effect on one of them to enhance the sound field. Good luck, and I'd love to know what you decide to do... keep us posted! -tom -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- >I am trying to find out if using 2 different mics for live recording would do?/ I have access to a Rode NT-2 and a Nuemann U-87, one each. I would use them both as cardioids./ Can I use these to record shows? Has anyone ever tried this?

From: "mark wilkins" <wilkinsmd@hotmail.com> Subject: SoundDevices MP-2 question Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 01:38:43 Question for MP-2 users, esp those with relatively high-output mics... Do you find the need to run pads between the mics and the MP-2? I'm getting tired of dragging around -10db pads to put between my mics and preamp to keep the pre from getting overloaded. Have had my eye on an MP-2 for a while and was wondering if anyone could comment. The corollary question is in regards to its output...any problems running it into a relatively wimpy input such as that on a D7/D8? The same pre I'm currently using brickwalls a D8 (but not an SBM) at louder shows, even on low gain settings. From: "L. Sean Kennedy" <liam@fedney.tech.xo.com> Subject: list housekeeping (call for self-editing) Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 10:18:49 -0400 Hey folks, I want to suggest informally that we limit ticket posts and other "personal requests" to ensure they are related to taping activities. I think we do fairly well on this and Tom's post is reasonable, but it reminded me to clarify this point. DAT-heads is a large list, so its necessary to focus on taping related pursuits. WRT to tickets the following seems to make most sense: - I can't make this show do you want my ticket before I offer it elsewhere - trading taper tickets for tours that do so - occasional grovel if you have tried all other avenues and feel success via dat-heads is likely Among others, I have sucessfully used the list for ticket stuff, so I do think its a valuable resource, but it needs to be kept in moderation to not drown out technical discussions. I was a little disappointed with some of the comments about bootleggers. Most of that seemed to sort itself out, but this is another case where some self editing would ensure you don't stereotype individuals... and also cries to "out them... out them" -- ferverent mob behavior usually lends itself to bad justice. If someone believes a person is selling tapes and is trying to trade on dat-heads, I suggest sending them a clear-headed note and depending on the response warning other folks on the list clearly. I will finish including taping related "personal request". :-) Is anyone going to see Bebel Gilberto at the Becon in NYC tonight or in San Francisco on 7/5,6? Also NYC Summer Stage (free, Rumsey Playfield; fire engine noises are free too :-)) on 8/09? I would be really interested in setting up a trade and I suspect all will be good shows. Sean

I'm interested in Radiohead from the US tour going on right now, but only from sources up front, closer to the stacks. I don't want to listen to distant recordings from the lawn. I'm also looking for Autechre shows(the earlier the date, the better, no 2001 please!), Mogwai shows, and Smashing Pumpkins shows I don't have. I prefer to trade on cdr. MKW does accept command-line switches, you can specify the compressor and add queue up files for processing. Details are buried in the docs somewhere. Lately though I've been using Monkey's Audio (www.monkeysaudio.com), another free lossless audio compressor. It's slower and I think Windows-only, but has better compression than .shn (in "extra high" mode) and has a command-line version. -Michael

Unfortunately, the PS-2 has no bass roll-off like the AT boxes and I'm looking for a solution when taping bassy shows. I remember the "build your own binaurals" page had a circuit for this, but that link is now stale. What inexpensive options are there or what kind of roll-your-own solutions might I try? I have the DA-20 SCMS override enabled and all I get is unitelligable noise when I play back. I have taken the coax (monster cable) and hooked it to my DVD player and all works fine.
