Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 17:52:30 -0700 Might be considered off-topic, but since I bought the card for two-way SP/DIF use with my new M1... Anybody know if I can make an Echo Mia 24/96 card co-exist in the same Win2K system as an SB Live! card? Ideally, I'd like to route the stupid Windoze alert sounds only to the Live! card, and have the Mia be what Cool Edit talks to. With perhaps the Live! card also allowing me to use the speaker system it's driving to monitor with? Probably a better forum in which to ask this, though...? ------------------------------ From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: exiting the venue in stealth mode Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 20:56:14 EDT Hi everyone I must concur about keeping the deck running as you exit -t here is absolutely zero reason to turn the equipment off when you leave a venue. For one thing, the show is over, so wasting batteries or dat tape won't be a problem, since you can recharge or replace the batteries and get a fresh dat for the next venue. And security people usually have to watch people as they leave to make sure that everything & everyone is safe, so it's easy to be seen fiddling with equipment. Also I've sometimes had some interesting post-concert conversations while walking to the car that are sometimes amusing to hear when playing-back the concert a year or three later. One of my favorites was after this year's Low concert, when my friend asked who their guest star was for the final song and I replied "Oh that was Mark Kozelek from the Red Hot Chili Peppers" which amused me immensely; once I accidentally left one post-concert chat on a tape I copied for someone, when I mentioned how I thought the band was utterly b oring and I was just taping them for a friend, and my friend felt very flattered that I'd see his favorite band just to tape them for him - oh how friendship really knows zero boundaries... So yes - heed stealth advice, and touch your equipment as little as possible, especially when the show is over!!! One final question is the remote that comes with the Sony Walkmen. Does it come with a record button? Somewhere I read that the remote for the M1 does NOT have a record button. It looks suspiciosly a lot like the remote that comes with the D100, which I read "has all the program features found on the deck". So, is there a difference between the remote you get with the M1 vs. the D100 ??? Note: I am not talking about the RMT-D100, which although it looks like the functionality I need, is a little too bulky. -jason ------------------------------ From: David Carmean Subject: Re: Remote for D100 / M1 Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 23:22:42 -0700 Apparently, only the Euro version of the M1 "comes with" a remote; I just bought one yesterday at Leo's in S.F., and compared with the D100, it's "missing" the remote and the earbud phones. The RMR-D100, which I also purchased, is an AC-powered, only moderately-portable accy. It has both optical and coax(RCA) S/PDIF ins and outs. I took the non-working model to the SONY service centre here in the UK and used the receipt of my old player, to make out that the unit was faulty. They stupidly didn't notice the difference in serial numbers and I thought 'great..now I'll have two working DAT corders'. Unfortunately they got back to me saying that the head unit was damaged and that as a 10 year model, the parts are no longer available! I can't believe that this is the case...even with SONY models, parts for our 11 year old TV are still available? Does anybody have any contacts in this field or should I try SONY in Japan? Failing that, does anybody know a quick fix / repair centre / parts supplier? Look forward to your views. Suggestions for other home decks? I would like a model that is in production and is repairable! My plan is to buy a Digital amp with Dolby surround ect, and hook up a consumer CD deck, a consumer DVD player, my M1 and possibly the PCM-R300. Recording from my Sony consumer CD deck to my M1 using a 7 pin to Toslink cable the M1 displayed a SCMS code of 10. If I hooked up the M1 to the PCM-R300 to dub this recording via Toslink would I get a "Prohibit"? What if I switched the configuation around- Consumer CD deck=PCM-R300=M1? Ideally I would like to record audio digitally between my M1 and PCM-R300 and from any consumer device I throw in to the mix with S/PDIF. However, I assume with a SCMS 10 recording, I would not be able to pass a digital signal to a consumer minidisc recorder or consumer CD-R recorder? Also, what kind of a battery drain occurs if I leave my POC-DA12P Toslink cable connected to my M1 and my consumer CD deck, and will leaving the the plastic cap on the unused Toslink out cable affect performance during operation? Thanks, -- Thomas ------------------------------ From: pro audio Subject: 24-bit multi-track laptop recording? Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 11:33:59 -0700 (PDT) Don't know if this has been discussed before on this forum, but was curious if anyone here has done any research on the options currently available for a relatively high-end (24-bit/96 KHz) but affordable multi-track portable rig? Recording direct to the hard drive on a laptop comes to mind, especially since Sony hasn't yet given us a DSD walkman-sized unit, though this probably wouldn't be too useful for those needing a stealthable solution ("ummm, I need my laptop to finish up a business report during the show" :) For location or field recording purposes, the laptop approach could be quite appealing, especially when compared against having to lug around racks of Tascam or ADAT MDMs... I've started browsing on the web, and thus far have found 3 options: http://www.motu.com/english/motuaudio/828/body.html http://www.rme-audio.com/english/hdsp/cardpci.htm http://www.rme-audio.com/english/hdsp/multifa.htm http://www.mhlabs.com/mobileio/mio.html The MOTU is quite attractive pricewise, but my reservations are concerned with whether the 828 can do 88/96 KHz (the website does not say anything on this, other than its 24-bit capabilities), and over the fact that the outboard unit requires AC mains power. RME, like MOTU, has a solid reputation for great products, but once again its outboard unit is AC dependent (though it seems to also have a 12V car battery option), and isn't yet available. The Mobile I/O isn't yet available too, and the website is a bit elusive in its info on ADAT capabilities...but the outboard unit does take its power from the laptop, thus avoiding a dependency on AC mains (though one wonders how much the power drain on the laptop batteries would be if we were phantom powering all 8 inputs?!). Does anyone here have any insights/breaking news/other options/opinions on this? :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I'm getting > tired of dragging around -10db pads to put between my mics and preamp to > keep the pre from getting overloaded. Have had my eye on an MP-2 for a > while and was wondering if anyone could comment. The corollary question is > in regards to its output...any problems running it into a relatively wimpy > input such as that on a D7/D8? The same pre I'm currently using brickwalls > a D8 (but not an SBM) at louder shows, even on low gain settings. Well I don't know if Neumann KM140's would be considered "high output" or not, but here's my experience with the SD-MP2. No I do not use an external pad. But I do use the Neumann internal -10db pad. But even if I didn't have the internal -10db pad, I would just lower the input gain on the MP2. Currently I run the MP2 gains at about "9 o'clock" which I think translates to about +26db... the MP2 has range of +16 to +66 if I remember correctly. So if I wasn't using the -10db pad on my mics, I'd simply lower the gain on the pre-amp by 10db. I have used the MP2 with a SBM/D8 combo, and also used it going directly into the D8 line in (NOT mic in!). To tell the truth I can't really hear a major difference between using the SBM and not using it. I still use the SBM most of the time anyway, because I like it's A/D better than that of the D8, but if I'm running low on batteries, or just don't want the extra "hassle" of another device in the rig, I'll simply run the MP2 directly into my D8. Never "brickwalled" with this setup, and tape mostly loud rock, metal, etc... I absolutely LOVE the SoundDevices MP-2. Everything I've done with the above rig has been amazing.
