A couple of comments: I prefer to shut the deck (MD in my case) off when the show ends, for a couple of reasons. If the MD batteries run out before the table of contents is saved, everything recorded is lost. I always start a show with the internal nicads fully charged and the external battery pack attached, but better to be safe. I've never gotten caught. The other reason stems from my first ever taping experience - I forgot to turn the MD off after the show, and indeed recorded some fascinating conversations with my friends. I also got a complete audio-verite account of my visit to the men's room after the show! I'll throw in a quick grovel here - did anyone happen to record Norman Blake at the Village Underground in NYC last weekend? For the first time in nearly three years of stealth taping, I left my mics at home, and therefore missed recording a fabulous show! It's not worth worrying about, unless you copy to a CD, in which case you need to make sure that the emphasis flag remains set. It's roughly similar to dolby: the sound is changed on recording, and the change is reversed on playback. The dual changes have the effect of reducing quantization noise, especially for 14-bit (PCM) signal. Which leads to another question ... I read that the RMT-D100 (the wired remote) works great with the D8 but stutters the pause button cyclically when used with the D100. Has anyone used the RMT-D100 successfully with an M1 or a D100? Since I've corresponded with someone with a RMR-D100 (the infrared remote) can I correctly conclude that the problem is with the wired remote and not the D100 and M1 themselves? In other words, a plain wired remote *ought* to work. That's the background. Here's the project... I've decided on a D100 in order to get the freebie "headphone out" remote (and I'll be dumping everything to CDR so I'm not worried about SCMS). This will work for stopping, rewind/ff and play. But since I can't afford to record intermission, and I also would stand out if I reached down my trousers and started feeling around, I'd like to build a custom remote to the 7 pin out for one purpose only - record. I've read on a MD mail list that theoretically, all one needs to know is the output that the remote passes during the record command and then build a capacitor-switch to replicate the command. If I had one of these D100 remotes I could personally test the connector for output myself. But being as I don't want to shell out $140 for a five minute test, I'm making a request for some curious DAT Head to test the specs on the D100 remote and, if successful, I promise to create a HOWTO webpage. Maybe even with pix. So please, help me out if you have the knowlege and equipment, and I'll put the knowlege back into the community. -jas ------------------------------ From: daygw@vincennes.navy.mil Subject: Question about sound cards Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 10:47:36 +0900 OK, I have a real quick question. The other day I was in Akihabara in Tokyo, and found what appears to be a really, really sweet deal on a sound card, but never saw the name discussed or listed. I found an ONKYO sound card for approx. $80. It has Fiber, S/PDIF, and RCA in and outs. The reason I am entertaining the idea of purchasing this is due to the fact that ONKYO manufactures outstanding stereo equipment, and figured that a sound card manufactured by them would probably be a best bet. Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 00:52:12 -0400 I'm thinking of upgrading my microphones in the next few months (I'm currently using CSCs.) I don't want to spend too much money. I'd like to stay under $400, if possible around 300. I tape mostly electronic/rock bands in clubs and sub-2500 person venues. I'm looking for a more balanced sound than the CSCs. I like what I've heard from the OKM's which unfortunately isn't that much. Could some nice dathead out there shn or mp3 up a sample of a show recorded with OKM-R's? Preferably something rock/electronic in a smallish club? I want to know how I can expect them to perform.. 128 is OK if it is a mp3, but 160 or 192 would be better, since I *am* trying to judge the sound quality :) Could you also just upload a text file with info on the show? The venue size/notes/whatever would be appreciated. I've set up a FTP server if anyone out there reads this grovel.
