I know he allows, but I was hoping to run a matrix on Wednesday and wasn't sure if a board feed is available. I know that there were some matrix tapes from his last tour. Thanks for any info. John ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: losing everything Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 01:04:53 -0700 >I prefer to shut the deck (MD in my case) off when the show ends, >for a couple of reasons. If the MD batteries run out before the >table of contents is saved, everything recorded is lost. I thought they had fixed this by now, like the last thing the batteries did before shutting off was write out the TOC... But in any case, this is another reason why DAT is better, even if it didn't sound better... and also, a consideration when chosing any computer-based solution. On a laptop, if you lose power without saving the file, you can probably recover the file with Scandisk (as a huge "lost fragment"). With Windows NT, I don't think you would even lose the file if you shut off the computer mid-stream. With Nomad Jukebox, I think you lose the file, though I'm sure this is something they'll try to fix. As to your other issue about recording bathroom and banter, with a MD you could always sub-divide the track and then erase the excess. On DAT you can just add an ID, or add a end_ID (actually preserving everything that follows), or erase the excess. --Gary ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: Another reason to keep rolling Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 01:14:18 -0700 If you use rechargable batteries, you'll find out how long you can record till they run out. --G ------------------------------ From: "Lowman, David" Subject: Sonny Landreth Taping Policy? In fact, there were two tapers sitting in my reserved seats (Sec 2 Row N Seats 21-22), dead center in a prime taping spot. I didn't make a fuss and sat elsewhere since I didn't bring my gear, so someone owes me a copy of this show! I've got at least 3 other Boston area Medeski shows I'd be willing to trade..... The first shows that I will be taping are a few Cowboy Junkies shows next week. Since this is my first _full-size_ rig, I have a few question that I am sure you can help me with. 1. I am planning on using the KA200N cardioid caps. I also have the KA500HN hyper-cardioid caps, which would be better? I have heard some great tapes with the cards but I have not found anyone using the hyper-cards (that tells me a lot right there). 2. From reading comments here and at the Oade tapers forum, I am planning on setting up NOS. Would anyone set up differently? 3. Would a Denecke AD-20/Zefiro InBox make a difference with this rig, or is the A/D on the DA-P1 just as good? (I'm still saving up for the AD2K) I think that's it for now, TIA ~Robert ------------------------------ From: Thomas Plum Subject: How to override a SCMS 10 setting on CD deck to M1 toslink Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 12:01:27 -0500 With a digital transfer from my consumer CD deck to my M1 I get a SCMS code of 10 even when I set the M1 to 00. Since I'll be inside before almost everybody else, I don't think I'll even be able to verify this for myself. Can any other Bay Area folks confirm/refute this claim? Anyway, I've got one of these to try: http://www.raineinc.com/CatItemDetail.asp?Src=S&Cat=0067&SrcInfo=1&Item=0067 I'm going to lengthen the straps and try it inside my upper thigh. But I also have to figure out what to do with the battery box for the CSBs I just ordered yesterday (arriving tomorrow)....? FWIW, I made my first binaural tests yesterday with a Radio Shack 33-3028 stereo tie-clip pair, split and hung over my ears with eyeglass straps. Although the mics themselves aren't wonderful, the spatial cues are pretty fscking amazing! I recorded myself coming back home from the Radio Shack, and when I got to the part where I'd walked inside the house and closed the door, I stopped the tape to make sure it wasn't "real" :o) ------------------------------ From: JAGABRIELJR@aol.com Subject: ISO Allman Brothers Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 17:52:06 EDT Hi, I am searching for a great sounding copy of 3/1/96 from the Beacon Theater by the Allman's. I was at the Soundman shop today (OKM manufacturer) to pickup some mics and they told me that in the next few weeks new versions with skin colored wires and foam will be available. I think thats great for wear them in ear at shows. There is also a sunglasses version in planning. I have a pair of eco- charge 6V batteries, along with 2 of the SC-61 'Smart Chargers'. I would assume I could get one of those DC to AC converters that plugs into the cigarette lighter, and then a power strip into that to take care of recharging 2 batteries at a time as I drive from city to city. Here's the problem....what happens if I won't be driving? Do you think I could use the same setup to charge the batteries overnite without the engine running, and without killing my car battery? Thanks for any help, -Dan Greenberg- ------------------------------ From: "Bob Griesel" Subject: RE: recharging eco-charges in the car Reply-To: Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 18:01:03 -0700 I do this all the time. For a sample scenario, consider that you might want to put 10 amp/hours (AH) back in your batteries. 10 AH at 6 volts is the same amount of power as 5 AH at 12 volts. Now assume that the charging process is only 50% efficient due to the DC>AC inverter and the SC- 61 chargers (in reality, the process is probably much more efficient than 50%). With 50% efficiency you will take 10 AH from the car battery. If you have a decent car battery, you can probably to this 3-4 times before starting the car becomes an issue; a good car battery is good for drawing maybe 100 AH. If you want to be safe, start the car for a few minutes each morning after you charge the recording batteries. The car's electrical system can replace the energy used for charging in a very short time (given that your car starts right up. If you have a rig that must be cranked forever until it starts, then all bets are off.) Good luck Bob > > > Here's the situation...I'm going to be attending festivals > this summer as well as back to back to back shows on > consecutive nites (while camping). I'm still learning how to operate my new M1, and was attempting to (as best I can with this hardware) transfer an audio CD from my CD-ROM player to tape, completely in digital. Things were proceeding nominally until about 20 minutes in, I touched/adjusted the DAT volume control, and the sound went to hell. Looking at the waveform in Cool Edit, there appears every .010 seconds an interval where the signal drops to zero for 32 sample intervals. The config is as such (running on a Win2K PC): Generic (BTC?) CD-ROM --[digital output]--> Soundblaster Live --> MS Media Player 7.1 with CD digital playback selected --> Echo Mia 24/96 card --> Hosa RCA coax --> Sony RMR-D100 remote --> PCM-M1 7-pin Running the DAT on the Sony-supplied AC adapter; Sony MDR-V6 phones in M1 headphone output. The Mia console is set to use internal sync, and was set to AES/EBU rather than (consumer) S/PDIF output format. Is that my problem right there? This problem had happened on the first "take" of this experiment also; either when I touched the DAT or when I depressed the volume control (thinking possible ESD triggering this, here....) Tips? Other forums better suited to the scope of the question?
